I have drawn a unit 33 mule deer tag for the 10/18-26 season. Does any one know how much and what part of the Flat Tops Wilderness is contained in the unit. I know the east boundary is canyone creek, but I cant tell on my maps where it hits the northern boundary, the divide. Any info would be a great help. Called a couple dow offices and couldn't find any one who knew. Also any hunt info will the animals be up high? Does it pay to do a backpack style hunt in this unit or is it too roaded? Any general info would be great not looking for secret spots just overall. I have never hunted this area before just hunted Eastern MT so any input would help. Thanks

I also drew a 3rd season tag for the unit, I got on the Colorado DOW website and went to the gmu maps section, and zoomed in on the boundaries and drew them on my topo map. It worked great, their proclamation boundaries leave a lot to be desired.

The white rivers the boundry on the North, Canyon Ck is the Eastern boundry, Colorado River on the south and Hwy 13 on the west, Id draw a line on your topo like Huntinfoo, and you should be fine,

Your right I had to go look at the discriptions in the back of the brouchure but your right right there in black and white, Its the divide, I always thought it was the river. sure am glad I didnt have a tag and kill anything down in the bottom.

None of the Flat Tops is in unit 33.
If you Join Huntin Fool, (and you should) you can get topo maps with the unit boundaries overlaid. Also you can download them to use with GooglEarth.
I might be able to send you that file if someone told me how to do it!?

>Avsman, that's incorrect. The north
>boundary is the divide between
>the White River and Colorado
>River drainages.

What's your opinion of the Unit 33 Deer Hunt Colorado Oak? My buddy drew the Third Season on a second choice and I'm considering buying a tag to go with him. I've never hunted this particular unit but looking at maps and Google Earth it looks like good deer habitat.

I have hunted 33 sevral times for deer and it is ok if it was your 2nd choice. Me along with the rest of the western slope have cow tags comming up in 33 (mine is for the Oct 18th season) and to tell you the truth if I did not have a uncle with some land and friends with land in 33 I would not choose to hunt deer there. Not bad for cow elk if again you have private access or are willing to work at it.

I did get a 27" 3x3 a few years ago and if you look into Dodo's fields early or late no doubt you will see some 160 to 180 deer but finding them on public land after the first day of rifle is a chore.. IMO unless you have some good private ground to access there seems to be hunters on top of hunters up with camps set up just about anywhere you can put a tent or park a trailer. I access this area from the newcastle / rifle side and things may be less crowded as you get over towards meeker.

Good luck, just prepair yourself and your hunts to be around a lot of other hunters..
