Idaho area 55

I drew an Idaho controlled hunt deer tag for area 55. I will only be able to go there for about 3 days max. Would anyone have any info on where I could go to glass some bucks? I have never been to the area before.

Yeah. According to the Idaho game unit map, it's labeled Oakley. This area is somewhat south east of Twinfalls. I think there is a little town or community called Albion or something. Does that sound right?

I grew up on the east edge of the unit in the Raft River valley. I have not hunted 55 for about 15 years but there have been some good bucks taken in the unit the last 3-4 years.

Does any one ever check out or do a little research on the area they put in for? Chaps my butt to see all these questions about hunt areas and the people who drew them have no idea about any thing of the unit. I think I would do a little research if I am putting in on a hunt. Sorry I know nothing of the area. Good luck

Well Gene, I didn't just pick a number out of a hat and say "Ok, I'll put in for area 55". As for researching an area, I know that 55 is directly NE of one of my favorite NV areas where I hunt deer, elk, and lions. I've heard good things about 55 so I put in and luckily drew a tag. I know how to hunt and I know how to scout and I rarely need help. I had 2 to 3 scouting trips planned before my hunt even starts there. Due to a change in my schedule I can't make them now. I now have 3 elk hunts, 2 of which I'll be guiding, and 6 deer hunts, 4 of which I'll be guiding. All starting this week. That's why I only have 3 days max like I stated in my original post. Sorry for the inconvenience of a chapped butt by asking for a point in the right direction.

Wow! Too bad NV1977, if you had a CLOWN tag I think that you may have found a trophy. I thought that was what a big part of this site was about, share info and helping fellow hunters.

Yep, that;s it. Sounds like you might have got some more recent info by the replies. I must say that some of the biggest deer i have seen were in that unit. When i hunted it you could hunt archery general season but only lE rifle. It was always a great place to go to look at nice bucks. Keep your eyes on the ground too, tons of arrowheads up there too. Also, watch out where you are at if a big raqin storm comes in on yuo. Those roads get unpassable in a short 1/2 hour storm. You could slide right off the ridge and not know what hit you. Good luck on your hunt.

Muley, I see this site ranks right up there with archerytalk and bowsite. You know not enough of me to be calling me a clown. Too many times I see on here just what this post is about. As I said I personally would do a little research on an area before I put in for a tag there. Especially as hard as tags are to draw in Idaho. It was not my intentions to sound rude, just asking a question. Thanks for the "helpful" comment.

Ok guys, I didn't mean to start anything. Lets move on and keep this site a positive, beneficial, and helpful one. For those of you that gave me some tips, I greatly appreciate it and thanks again. Good luck and happy hunting to everyone.

Apologies to all, not trying to stir the pot. The info I get and give on this site is one of the reasons I love it. To me it is a very valuable scouting tool. As far as not knowing Gene enough to call him a clown, you are right I don't know you enough I just went off the info you presented. So again I apologize. NV1977 Good Luck on your entire season, sounds like a full one!

I read some, but not all, of the posts. There is some validity to the comments about knowing a unit before applying.

That off my chest. NO, this is not the south hills. That is unit 54. 55 is immediately east. It has some very nice bucks. If you were there RIGHT NOW, you could see some REAL GOOD ones up on the top.......long walk from the parking lot, but fairly level. Or a long glass from Cassia Peak looking back.

By the season, they will not be so visible. I'm more of an expert on 54, but would suggest hunting in the roadless area near the top. I've got family members who hunt there regularly. PM me if you'd like.

Within the shadows, go quietly.

NV, get in touch with supersider. He lives down in that area and may be of some help. No guarantee though.

I've put in for the last two years with no luck. I'm jealous. My friend drew the tag last year and took a good buck. Seems like he stayed fairly low, but got out and walked forever to get away from the other hunters. Good luck to you.

I hunt this unit regularly..i got pictures of great bucks one the ground, but i don't want to ruin yur expections. You'll have to put in your time and put in your miles. After Oct 5th, the big boys seek deep dark cover, and aren't seen for very long. Good luck man

Hey man! I grew up in this UNIT... I lived there my entire life. My parents still live there. The town that is in the unit is called Oakley ID. Give me a call and I will hook you up with some great options.
