I currently shoot a 165 grain Horandy ballistic tip. I like that Hordnady puts the ballistic drop on the box of shells. How accurate will this be to rely on? I want a grain that I can hunt deer and elk without changing grains. I also want one that would be good out to 500 yds. Beyond that I would not be shooting. Any info would be appreciated.

The Ballistic tip is a horrible round for Elk. It expands to rapidly. I have seen Elk shot with them and the bullet only penetrate a few inches before disintegrating. If you are a Hornady fan and love copolymer tipped bullets I would shoot the Interbond. Excellent bullet and will hold up to Elk sized game and the BC is very high on that bullet. I really wish ammo manus. would not post the Trajectory of the round on the back of the boxes, they can be very misleading. They may be fairly close but you will need to shoot your gun with that load at yardages to determine where your gun will place a bullet. Do Not rely on the trajectory info on the back of the box! A little story: a hunter came into deer camp in Montana and claimed to be a big hunter and could shoot very well, so he said. I took to the practice range and at 200 yds he did very well. Showed him some pics of a nice 185" non-typ. Muley and he said he wanted it. Went out next day looking for it. During the drive to the area he was babbling about bullet drop out of his gun and how at X yardage his bullet will drop so much and have X FTLBS of energy. Impressed me. Well I find the buck feeding and range him at 428yds. He shoots, LOW, shoots again,LOW. I make him stop. The Deer finally runs off. He then exclaims, " the bullet box said I should be X inches low at 400, I do not understand!" After that I would not let him shoot at anything unless it was 200yds or less.

With the twist rate of a 300 Win Mag a 180 grain bullet would be best, (in most cases). A great bullet would be the Interbond (Hornady) or an Accubond, (Nosler). Both are very well made bullets and with a high B.C., I am sure most people would agree that they are excellent bullets for hunting. When I used to shoot factory ammo out of my 300 Win Mag I was shooting Federal Premium 180 grain Nosler Accubonds and they shot very well out of my gun. I have since went to custom loads but that combination always worked well and performed great for me.

I have shot the 180gr Ballistic tip out of my 300wby for years without any problems, deer or elk.
It is the most accurate bullet i have ever shot and i trust it.

HOWEVER..........I am "souping up" my Weatherby and going to squeeze the long range capability out of it (and myself) by making a few changes too it.
One being that i am dropping down from the 180gr BT and going to a 165gr Accubond (maybe even a Berger) for speed and flatter trajectory and i know i'd better shoot a "beafier" projectile if i want it to do what i'm asking of it. :)

I've always shot the fail safe. Awesome bullet. Still have a box of 165's. I've used for both deer and elk with great results. Not sure what bullet I'm going to shoot when I run out. I was thinking the barnes or maybe winchesters fail safe replacement.

I also shoot the winchester 165 grain fail safes,
and have had great luck, they quit making them
so I bought 10 boxes, they should last me a
long time.

I have tried several different factory loads,
and couldn't group as well as the fail safes.

I second the Barnes Triple shock X bullets. I shoot a 300 win mag as well. I shoot hand loaded triple shock x's in 180 grain with 68 grains of imr 4350 powder. Since using this I have never shot anything farther than about 250 yards but, it has done excellent on everything I have shot. I have been very happy. I am considering switching to Barnes newer Tipped triple shock bullets. The tip helps with quicker expansion and the solid copper bullet stays together very well to kill very well!!! I am trying to research these a bit more before we switch and test them out.

Just the other day I bought some factory loaded Federal shells with the 180 gr barnes triple shock x bullet. I took them to the range the other day and was just shooting at a 100 yards. I was impressed with the accuracy too.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess bottom line is go out and shoot my gun. I just have been using the hornady sst loads and they have produced for me. I guess if it aint don't fix it.
