Received this picture awhile ago and ONLY know it is in Unit 62 as the hunter was hunting ELK with his state wide MUZZY tag. Don't know if he has a deer tag this year or not and if he is going back to try and get this buck. Nice buck though.

So, is he a first day shooter?
I have a 2nd season tag, but was hoping for something a bit wider than that.
I bet he'd be a monster next year.;)

You better shoot him any day you get a chance. I just spent 12 days on there muzz hunting deer(3 scouting 9 hunting) and let me tell you those big deer disappear quick when they get pressure. I saw a couple 180 deer, but never got one on the ground.

Way Cool! I have a 3rd season tag for 62. I would not pass that buck. If anyone would like to share any info to help me on my up coming hunt would be great.
Thanks, 3DEER

I will be hunting the second season (Oct 18th - ?), for mule deer, I would take this buck for sure! Width is not everything!

Pass? A bit bigger? Holy cow that is a good buck. I am slamming him firt minute of daylight.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-08 AT 09:55PM (MST)[p]Oh, come on ktc.......
What do you think this buck will score?
Without seeing a profile he looks like only a 3 point on the left side(opposite the dropper).......???
Narrow spread....maybe 22-23"????

Am I underestimating him?

I am usually off the other way....thinking a buck is much bigger than he really is.;)

a3,

He could be a 3? All I know is score is not important on this one for me. The G1's and the dropper are good enough. I cannot guess score with this look, but again, based on height, what I can see of the forks and mass, the eyeguards, and dropper, I am shooting this guy.:)

I doubt you are underestimating. If he is a 3 on the one side he is not going to score big. If he is a 4X4, I think he would be pretty good? Not sure how good exactly though. Just my thoughts?

ktc,
I can understand that, but I compare this to the 35" buck from teh same unit that was posted by kilowatt a while back. I know there are bucks a lot bigger in this unit.
I am not one to focus on width, but more on the "wow" factor. That decision is made in the field for me, at the moment with a shot presented, I ask myself if that's the buck I want.....

The first year I hunted Colorado I tagged a smaller buck the second day of the hunt, then saw bigger bucks later on that I would have much rather taken. Had to spend the rest of the week watching other guys being the shooters and knowing it could have been me if I hadn't of shot the first decent buck I saw.

With this buck, I may be willing to shoot him just for the dropper. Never seen a public land buck (in person)that had a drop tine.
I will have 5 days before the season to scout as well.....

Strange how lopsided he is. I think the full moon screwed me just like I know it did for a lot of the UT big bull guys. I hope you guys tear em up on the rifle hunts. I KNOW the quality is there, I saw a lot of good deer scouting and a couple awesome bucks on my hunt, I just couldnt get in done. Most frustrating hunt of my life. And of course I could have killed quite a few 6 point bulls on my deer hunt. Thats how it goes sometimes. Did your friend get a bull?

a3d,

You make an interesting argument. I am heading over in a few weeks and appreciate those thoughts. For many reasons I would shoot, but it appears I should be very careful and selective making sure I do not do anything stupid.

Thanks.

Ty,

Don't shoot that buck until the last day. You're not hunting in Utah anymore...

Good luck! Hope you guys have a great trip.

Prism,

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty Utarded any more.

Ha! That was a funny post!:)

UPDATE:

THIS DROP-TINE BUCK WAS IN UNIT 85 ON A PRIVATE RANCH. Just got an e-mail from the picture taker and hunter with the Muzz Elk tag and said he wishes he had the Deer tag instead of Elk. LOL

He never got his Elk either. His dad and others will be back on this same ranch in three weeks for Deer & Elk so will have to wait and see if one of the three deer hunters finds this drop tine buck.
