Expert Advice Needed

I found an awesome game trail last year and I want to hunt it this year. It is a 35 degree north facing slope in between a water source and a bedding area. My plan of attack was to sit in the trees about 30 or 40 yards above it and wait for the deer to travel it early in the morning when the warming air would be rising. Treestands put you high enough to keep your scent off of the ground right? If that is true then I should be ok. Does anyone have any input on my theory or will I just be sitting there cold all morning?

It will be interesting to see what the experts say but I feel like water is usually a mid morning or afternoon sit myself ?

Well, in the first place, you won't be sitting there cold all morning if you dress appropriately. Plus, as you mention, the warm air will be rising so that should help keep you warm, too.

As far as spooking the deer, just make sure to remember that the warm air doesn't start to rise until several hours after the sun comes up and heats it, so early in the morning the breeze will still be blowing downhill. Unless, of course, there is a storm blowing in and then it could be blowing from any direction...and sometimes from different directions at once.

I think I know the spot you're talking about and I've seen some really nice bucks there in the past. If I were you I would sit a little bit closer to the water hole in that little opening about 10 yards off the side of the trail. And, I would hold out for that non-typical 10x12. I'm sure he'll go over 190.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice sureshot, I will keep that in mind about the air not warming until later in the morning. Oh yeah, stay off my property from now on as well.

If it is a 35 degree slope and you are going to be 40 yards up the hill.......WTF for the tree stand labor?

"This ain't Dodge City and you ain't Bill Hickok"....if you get my meaning. Or, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore Toto!"

RE: Expert Advice Needed

I killed my biggest Buck sitting on water, in the morning. SO I think your reasoning is sound, especially if the weather is at all warm like it has been.

RE: Expert Advice Needed

I am not carrying a treestand up there, it's 3 miles away from the nearest road. I just want to use the idea of it by sitting on the hill above the trail. Last year I killed my buck as it was heading from the water into the trees at first light. That is part of the reason I like this spot.
