Scent Control or Watch the Wind?

Just wondering what the overall consensus was for or against the scent controlling camo, and equipment. Does it work? What do you all think, should the wind be taken more into account when you have the scent control, or do you just take advantage of technology? Or, do you go by the tried and true watch the wind, and hope to high heaven it doesn't shift on you in the middle of a stalk?

I do both. I do not count on the scent control to keep me scent free though. I'm always aware what the wind is doing and will hunt according to which direction the wind is going.

i got into the scent control thing the last couple years. My dad likes to tell me its a stupid waste of money. You always have to watch your wind, i don't think that will ever change. I don't care what people tell you..if a deer has you directly down wind within a couple hunderd yards scent control is not going to get past their nose. Where it seems to have helped me is this..When i'm bow hunting and have gotten within that 80 yard range and the wyoming winds like to do their little swirl that comes out of nowhere, it seems to get past the animal, or at least to keep it from spooking out of the area. It seems to help when a deer is bedded down with its back to the wind and its eyes scanning ahead. You have to work that fine line from an angle behind the deer but not in the direct wind path. I think it might give you a little bit of forgivness.

Sent lock cloths require over 400 degrees to unlock the sent captured in the charcoal. You will incinerate your clothes trying to get them hot enough to work. Besides their camo is expensive and doesn't blend in very well out west.

I have never been one that wants to pack the BS sprays either to the top of a mountain 3 to 4 miles in. My pack is heavy enough as it is.

If you are a hiking leave the gimmicks home and play the wind.

My buddy loves his sent lock. I think it doesn't even work one bit because when he breaks wind he still stinks like dead worms.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Both are important. Like sw I'm not a fan of the scentlock clothing, but I do like to use scentless soaps and laundry detergents and a little cover scent. I too am unlikely to pack it in on the longer trips though. Regardless pay attention to the wind.

It is nice to see some people able to actually spell the word STALK on MM.

It is all about wind direction.

You can wrap up in scent lock clothing and I'm sure it will help. But there are still parts of you exposed some.

And I always wondered about your breath. You are putting more scent out on the wind with your breath than anything else it would seem to me.

If you shower each night and are transported to your blind in a vehicle, simply exit the vehicle and step into your blind, I suspect that scent control might work.

For those of us that get out and walk to hunt, sweat, and can't take a shower each day, hunt the wind because in that case scent control has never worked for me.
