I know this is a long shot, but looking for help for my 16 year old daughter. She will be hunting the Nebo during the muzzy and late season. (dance is causing us to miss some of the hunts)

Been spending the last few weekends up there and several more looking for something Big. Would love to hear what people are seeing--it is big, dry country this year.

Think it would be awesome to see a young person get something BIG...she loves to hunt.

If anyone cares to share, I will try and make it worth your time and it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Message me and we can talk.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-18 AT 07:07PM (MST)[p]Shoot me a PM. I bet I've got one of the top 5 bulls in the unit hitting one of my cams pretty regularly and I'm pretty sure I know where he'll be on the late hunt (assuming he doesn't get killed before that)

It's not as dry country as you think, just about every draw and canyon has some kinda water source in it. Lots of good bulls this year

How big is big?

Is this big?

Yeah those are great bulls, character on the first is very cool looks like week fronts...the second one looks like a stud got any more pictures of him--you can PM me or text me

But thanks for sharing!

Shoot if people are gonna throw out all this info I could use some spots! my wife drew the only non res late tag and has never killed a bull.

I am more than happy to share what I learn about the unit if that is where you are hunting--what season what unit, what method..what type of hunting

BearCat

Plenty familure with it! Pretty big unit and if there is a bull in somewhat of a fecent spot for my wife to get a crack at i will take the help. I know where I would be if I drew the tag but the wife can't make it places I can bud!

Same issue I am having with my Daughter--no brainer for me, but with the mentor tag I have to get Daughter and Wife--ugh!

Nice to see so many willing to help. I hope your daughter gets a bull that's she's proud of. Sometimes this site really steps up for the kids which is great. Share your hunt.

I agree many people have helped and she has never shot one so she does not care as much as her Dad that put in for 21 years for the tag..ha ha ha.

Head out next weekend for 4 straight weekends of scouting.

thanks to everyone that took a few minutes to help or comment!
D

Thanks!

Details:

1. So I have only one tag but have the multiseason tag..
2. Planning on early rifle, muzzy and Late season rifle. Probably a few days in each season but focus on the last of the muzzy with 4-5 days (due to her dance performances--ugh)
3. My daughter is on the mentor program of my wife's tag--will hunt as hard as need to, but have to be within handsignals (with a spotter of my wife) daughter has 4 deer and an antelope to her name so far but the "gray ghost" has eluded us so far..shooting a 270 with turret up to 500-600 yards
4 Went scouting up Payson a few weeks ago, but will spend the next four weekends before the first hunt scouting hard!

5. Cell phone is (801) 541-7723 my name is Dean, probably scouting in a old lifted black jeep Cherokee with a tire on the top..

I hope that helps!

The bull was 350. Great mass and tines, only 48 inch main beams. Probably the bull of my life though.
Saw a few at long distance that good but only one other in range I could have taken, perhaps 320 ish.
I can't seem to figure out the final step to upload pics from my phone. Rough country...

Still out looking so if any of you bow hunters turn something up--would really love to talk with you.

Thanking those that have already helped more than I can repay!

Dean

Bearcat said- ?no brainer for me, but with the mentor tag I have to get Daughter and Wife--ugh!?

Great attitude.

So let me get this straight...

You start a post that says your 16 year old is hunting the tag but then later you let everyone know that you have the same tag in your pocket..?? Poor form.

Not only that, but someone shares a photo of a 350" 6x7 and you say, "weak fronts"..??

You, my friend, don't need any help. I feel for the guys you already conned into sharing info.

I know how this one ends- You post up the photos of you and your bull. You'll say, "he's not the biggest one on the mountain, but he'll do". Then you'll explain how your wife and daughter only made it onto the mountain for one weekend and never even saw a bull.

Sorry brochacho- this whole thing stinks to high heaven. The only way you come away from this smellin like roses is if your daughter kills a beast, and you choke on tag soup.

I looked at one of my post in response to an earlier post and I did say "I have one tag" and then later talk about my wife and daughter's tag....they are one in the same just look at it as our tag because of the father daughter bond we share.

But to make it crystal clear---We only have one tag and it is my wife's and my daughter will be hunting under the mentor program. It is a chance of a life time for her and I can not wait for my daughter to experiences this, but mostly for me to watch her!

Sorry BrowningRage if that was unclear, but if you knew me and my family...it is ALL about my kids. I have not shot anything for many many years just focusing on the next generation!

Thanks for those that have helped and just to put a beautiful face to this amazing girl that is a 4.0 student, officer in her competition drill team and just an amazing girl here are a few of her accomplishments.

Thomas how did you do, what area did you like he best, send us pictures...any tricks would love to hear.

Driving home yesterday after helping the team, she said she was super pumped...going to take her on the last few scouting trips so I do not burn her out on all these early trips sleeping on the trail.

thanks
Dean

BearCat, I loved hearing about your family bonding over hunting. Your daughter ought to be proud of her budding hunting accomplishments. I have three daughters and can't wait to help them experience similar successes. My oldest is 11 and can't wait to pass hunter ed and start putting in for tags starting next year. She's been at my side hunting for only a year or so, but is pumped to do it again this fall.

Tell your daughter congrats on her deer and pheasant. Awesome trophies for sure!

Thanks GoHigher!

Please PM me as I have a great thing for kids, and worth every penny in my opinion if you live in the SLC valley. I wished I had gotten it years ago, but I would be glad to help out wherever I can.

There?s always a fire burning somewhere up there this time of year. They usually only consist of one tree or small group of trees and never really go anywhere. They just burn out on there own. Nothing to worry about with this one

Send me a PM. I killed the first day! I don't know how to post up a pic on here lol but I'll send u one to phone or Facebook.

Thanks Gohigher---I am very proud of her as we all are of our kids that choose the tougher road. Hope to have some pictures to share but for sure will have a memory!
Dean

Got to many other things to worry about...will say I took her out over the weekend and she smacked a watermelon at 435 yards with her grandma's 270. and hit a watermelon at 355 yards with the smokepole! Now that was with a good 15 mile cross wind and NO "big bull" nerves...ha ha. We worked on proper trigger pull, tripod setup, scope adjustments, foot stance, and reload.

Still got a lot to do as this will be her first muzzy attempt. But still a memory made since her grandfather was by her side and her Mom--God I love this adventure!

You've quelled my rage Bearcat.

I hope to see you, your wife, and your daughter smilin over a great bull in a few weeks.

Good Luck..!! And I hope my daughter wants to get our there with me in a few short years like you and yours. :)

No worries Browning, sometimes things do not translate to the paper quite the way they are in my head!

My Daughter started with sheds, rabbits and sage grouse and it has been upward from there.

I do also hope to be showing some great trophy pictures, but just the simple things continue to bring me joy.

A kid's smile and excitement is medicine for the soul!

Well as many know been kind of a crappy year for the Nebo Elk tag--with 5 weekends spent scouting, must of that area is burned. Turned to plan D or E (can remember now), and headed out again for the last of the rifle. The girls had a late night with a dance fundraiser and birthday but got them up at 3 am for a trip. We saw several good bulls but all of them were busted up.. With the dry year 7 out of 10 bulls are broke. She held off.

This is the crew that I am so very proud of!

I have enjoyed following your post hopefully with the fires dieing down you?l
Have some good luck with the smoke pole.

Thanks Camper!

I do not shoot much anymore, but that is ok. It is time for family and friends. I was telling a friend this weekend how much fun it would be to just guide kids! They always seem to have a smile on their face in the mountains...ok ok not sure Haillie was smiling at 3:00 am but who does..ha ha

Anyway thanks

d

Great adventure. Glad you guys are still at it. Keep your chin up, and hers, and hers. Long Journeys are always tough but it will be worth it. Hope she gets a shot at a good one. Hope the Elk Gods are looking down on your girl.

I love the kid adventures like you.

DZ

Thanks and we are having a blast. Lots of kind people are helping to make this a great trip--either way it falls.

Hard to keep the chins up at 3:00am but a swift kick usually helps. My wife has been the real trooper as she has been on the hike with us vs just within hand signal range and helping to drive Haillie's around because of dance. She has been running her up/down to the mountain while I am scouting---ugh. Can I just say I HATE dance and anything that gets in my way of making hunting memories with my family---ha ha ha. Just venting as dance has helped her a ton as she has extreme anxiety and having lots of friends help her.

Anyway thanks for taking the time for the well wishes!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-18 AT 09:42AM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-18 AT 09:40?AM (MST)

Many of you have asked me to post on the status...well on Sept 30th at about 9:30 am after a 3 mile staulk, with her grandfather and mother by her side, Haillie took a 221 yard shot and made a perfect shot on her first nice 6x6 bull. He went about 30 yards and fell. She is the one that practiced, juggled her crazy high school life, overcame her anxiety, and packed/dressed and took care of HER bull. I am proud of her not for the kill, but for being more than what she thought she could be!

Now this story would not have had this ending without countless hours of help from many old friends and new friends on MM. Haillie had just had her homecoming dance on Sept 29th till midnight and then her, her mom and grandfather got up at 3am and drove to camp where we headed out to get into position on a bull the I and my good friend JD had found the morning before. As with most hunts even the best laid out plans do not work...this would turn out no different. But with help from another great friend, Deon was able to find them. A 3 miles cat and mouse game began with several broken up bulls causing more grief than I care for. The 6x6 had about 90 cows and spent most of the time fighting off a couple other larger 6x6 that were broken up pretty bad. Once we had the lead cow patterned, it was just a matter of getting in front of them and hoping the canyon we picked would be the right one. We were able to watch 100 elk file by us at 220 yards while I secretly prayed that the herd bull would give us a clean shot. He did and that was it.

Once again for all of those that texted, called, emailed and in any way helped--we thank you. With 80 % of the her area being closed and juggling life---we could not be happier. To watch my 76 year old dad crawl on all four in the dirt for hundreds of yards just to be next to and be apart of this young ladies memories is a testament to what hunting is all about! My wife that gave up her tag so that her daughter could experience this and picking to go vs just staying in the truck... by being a huntress in her way and sacrificing so much to juggle all the pieces---well words just can not explain.

Well I know that was long, but for those that know me I tend to be a bit long winded.
Thanks to everyone

That is great the whole family could be there. Not a bad bull for her first elk ! Hopefully she can top it in a few years. Congrats

Nice Job there BearCat Jr!

One of the Only few Tags that didn't get turned back!

I know so many people in so many places
They make allot of money but they got sad faces

It seems that the fire may help. Push down into areas more accessible. Good job at using the fire in your advantage. Did you see many other hunters ?

No we actually did not see more than two and a couple of people scouting for the cow hunt. I had heard that a lot of people turned them back in and the DWR also sent out letters to extend some of the hunts (of course we did not get that luxury because my wife had the multi season tag)

Thanks everyone!

Nice to see them Brims with some Curvature to them as Well!

Congrats to you, your wife and daughter for sticking with it. The fires made it a tough hunt. Looks like a lot of great memories were made with the family. Congrats on a fine Bull!

Wahoooo!!!! Awesome job for the young lady. Really proud of y'all for sticking it out and having a blast in a tough situation with the fire. That is a memory that can never be taken away and the result is just awesome! Best post of the year in my opinion. ATTA GIRL!!!

Thanks DesertRanch! I think only a father/mother can really appreciate what it feels like to be by your son/daughter side during a hunt, especially when it ends with success! A lot of us, hunting comes easy along with everything that goes with it, but for this new generation and those that have medical/emotional issues to also overcome it is much more difficult. We have tried on 3 general elk hunts in Utah and Colo to get the job done, but with patience and help from others (many on this board)...we made things work in our favor! I will say it was tough to spend months scouting and have all of that taken away in a matter of days without the ability to turn her tag in.

Once again thanks for the well wishs---she loves to read them!

This is as good a photo as anyone of us could ever hope for Bearcat. I'm so glad you all hunted hard and that she was able to put the bull on the ground.

Thanks for sharing your adventure with us all this year..!! Take care buddy.

Great question---it was a combination of just a safety thing I was teaching my daughter (that is why we just had hat on). With 4 of us all together and making a 3 mile stalk, I just wanted her to know where everyone was at if things got western...It worked out perfect but I also had my 76 year old dad that was trailing us a bit as well on the stalk and it was my way to keep track of him..

First off I know this is the Elk forum but I wanted to show some of you new friends that have followed Haillie (Hay Bear) this year.
As you know she is a 4.0 student and on a competition drill team and she loves to hunt...but she is lucky to. After a very cold morning she was able to make a 253 yard shot to the chest and put this guy down in his tracks. She has a tough year to follow..ha ha
