We have waisted a day and a half just learning private and public ground no shooters spotted yet heading up in elevation in the morning try some different areas to glass.So far have not been seeing very many deer it's time to start getting serious with the spotting scopes I guess.I will keep you posted if anything hits the dirt as this hunt goes on.We have to keep thinking positive a couple good bucks could be found before the opener so we will know which draw we want to concentrate in.Long hours behind glass tommorow is what I am thinking.
Have to get some sleep getting up real early looking some new country over will let you know you know if we locate any shooter bucks.

Somebody needs to bring us shorts and more ice it's hotter than July vehicle after vehicle driving past our camp to get set up for the elk hunt.We have not seen anything that would go over 160 yet will do some more spotting when it starts to cool off this evening.So far not so good guess that's hunting.Pro how you doing?Keep us on the positive side he he
I am in this hunt now until the end no matter what just seems not much happening so far and heck no there isn't 180 plus bucks everywhere if that was the case I might be a little more on the brag side Its going to take some time luck and hard hunting if you ask me.If anyone would like to give us a hint on where to try when it's hot like this pm me.
I will keep you guys posted from my hard to use I phone but I have no clue how to down size pics to use hey predator tell me how to do that using this new technology phone stuff.Ha

Have to go water the horses and myself heck with it on vacation until the hunt opens so why not just relax?Ktc says Colorado isn't what it's cracked up to be guess time tell we need a good cold front before this is over maybe, feels like 80 deg.

Keep at it boys. They are there. Supposed to cool off on Sunday with a slight chance of rain. No real good relief in sight for you guys. Sorry. All the elk hunters will push those deer high. If there is no snow, saddle them ponies and aim for the high basins.

KTC, make sure and call Justin while your over there. He will be guiding hunters the 1st part of the hunt but will likely be freed up by the middle of next week. In the mean time he can get you guys pointed in the right direction on the public.

Oh, and stay away from the red barn in Montrose.

today has been hot! We did find some potential shooters.

Did you get the pics of the tan girls rick? If not send war your email?

We have sure had some bad luck, stuff breaking, crappy news from home, horse problems and so forth. Nothing a big buck won't help. We will try justin also

Any hot tips are welcome. We are off to a good start though.
 
This is my "best" advice.

Don't get frustrated and burn yourself out. If the first few days of the hunt are hot and crowded take it easy. Sleep in a morning, go to town, read a book, take a nap, etc...

You've got 10 days, the best of which will likely be the last 5, not the first.

There's gonna be people everywhere, shooting everywhere. You'll swear there isn't a buck that could live through such an event. Every day people will go home, little deer will get shot, a few big deer will get shot, elk are gonna get shot-people are gonna leave. (Until the third season guys start to show up:))

The big bucks are still there-hiding, noctornal, scared %#itless, but eventually they'll screw up and you'll be there.

No pressure! ;-)
 
Like Prism said...... relax if the pressure gets to you. Even do what CAelknuts and his partner did. Take an evening off and make smores!:)

eel - can you really make smores with alluminum cans and beer tabs? I think thats all ktc and warbirdum have, or will have by the time they get done relaxing in camp. ktc, you need a camp superintendant?

wow what a slow night for deer. Lots of people. We are camped by a shooting range. We could have made a great comedy with film. One guy would stand about 20 yards to the side of the 100 yard target and after the shot he would walk over and yell where he hit. Tennessee redneck spotting scope I guess??

I was amazed how many guys shoot hours before the hunt?

This is not going to be easy but we will try. We have a few prospects. I will eat tag soup before any of us shoot a dink . Do. The gobs of elk hunters push the deer down?

Thanks for the help and advice to those who gave it. New units can be hard and help is always appreciated.
 
Stick with it Ty! I love the Tennessee spotting scope! I have seen those first hand! I just wonder who gets to be the down range guy! Keep us informed and good luck!

Whats the odds?Finding a big deer or finding a barbie doll out on a rotten rim rock mountain?Just craked me up they brang a doll back to camp now she gets to ride on Tys antenna until he kills then it goes on the next guys rig.ha

Ktc was so excited at the barbie find he fell off his horse. That is no joke. He was excited to see barbie also had her arms up showing the size of his buck width!

We have all been seeing buck today just no shooters yet hit it hard again this afternoon.Tons of hunting pressure worse than I have ever seen on any hunt anywhere.

Yep it's amazing Colorado produces the bucks it does with the pressure it receives.

C'mon, guys, quit screwin' around and get serious, fer cryin' out loud! ;) Obviously you are not hunting or glassing near enough. I suggest you move the lawn chairs 50 yards further from camp every day. If you plan it right, you can line up the beer out to the chair and drink your way back each night to find your way home in the dark.

Just don't line 'em up to the campfire, and you guys will be okee dokee.

Do I need to come over there and throw around some Preddy luck (it only works for other people, ya know)...?

If you can spot a barbie from the saddle, you are not glassing far enough ahead of your horse! Load up the pack saddles with the cold ones and get ridin!

Seriously though, Stick with it, the big bucks seem to pop up at the weirdest times in the weirdest places! Shoot straight when he jumps up in front of ya!

Well today I tagged out. One down. I may have got a little jumpy. He is a nice buck and I am happy. Not a high scorer, but very nice in my eyes. He is a 3x4 with eye guards and 28 wide. It was a hard decision. He was bedded in the pinyon and he never got up after about 20 minutes of watching each other. Now I get to help and that makes me happy as well.

Hopefully I get the smallest one and we will have done well. Maybe some pics tomorrow?

Justin H??? Good luck with that, been down that road and i advise you stay away. All talk and no action as far as i'm concerned with him. just a heads up for you KTC, you can give him a call but i would bet it won't get you anywhere. Sorry for popping in, I usually don't post but got a bitter taste in my mouth when i read that post... I'd tell u where u can go ty but then this post would get zapped. In NM we pass up those 28 inchers. If one of those things is ever spotted in NM we pass them immediately. We need those guys in the gene pool. We're doin good to kill 20 inch 130 class deer. That's why we nm guys gave up on those critters. As far as the redneck spotting scope... Im still laughing. Don't they teach that in hunter safety. lmao. 28 inch muley n u settled. don't send me any more posts u cry baby. lol

I bet that one unit in Colorado will produce more big deer than the general hunt in Utah.

Today was rough! Hot and dry but a cool front with rain. Hopeefully that helps?

I am not disappointed I just missed the three point side. Heis still a good deer and appears to have some age. I think we can still do better and hopefully the other guys can beat him. Prism is right this is not Utah hunting by a long shot.

Beer? No beer for this cowboy we are huntin! I took care of mine and had a lazy sabbath! Barbie was riding shotgun when I pounded him. She never complains best woman ever!

Warbird says barbie has killed a turkey slam? Ha! Ha!

Ktc, you said you are camped by a "shooting range". You wouldn't happen to be just a little north of I-70 and a little west of a certain state highway that runs north and south would you? And the shooting range isn't really a shooting range its just a place where a bunch people go and shoot?

Still passing bucks but seeing more today got some rain and it was colder just can't glass up anything I want yet maybe Tuesday morning.Went from sand to mud sent antlerrick pic of Ktcs buck hanging in his horse trailer sorry for not giving updates been hunting to dang hard to have Internet on my mind.Dang just can't seem to find good mass and deep forks it's driving us nuts.My wife mailed me told me to bring a good buck home or nothing so should just do as she says and keep trying.

We got the cold front and lost 15 degrees and some rain! Hopefully. That gets the ball rolling for war, saddlesore, and elvis?

Good times. This group is hilarious. Barbie has been a good sport. She is still sunbathing in a rain storm and never complained once.

Up early so saddlesore can get some fresh deer liver for liver and onions.

You may be right? That range is a pain but pretty funny. It is amazing how many shoot on their way to hunt? I like having my guns ready year round.

My daughter in law and her father have a couple cow permits on the mid December hunt. I'm thinking yours were earlier, but if not, we need to tackle those critters together! Sounds like it is pretty tough down there so far.

Elvis and bird passed more again today where are the hog bucks?We are heading higher just to give it a try maybe freeze in a tent up there if we find one big enough for barbie.
 
If the truth was known, I believe Barbie is with her rightful owner. I'd guess that it somehow fell out of one of their saddle packs, and when the other one found it, the real owner was too embarressed to admit it, but made sure that they brought it back to camp as a mascot!
Now really, how would Barbie end up on the top of a cliff!?????

We just need to know the rest of the story to see who tries to sneak it back under cover come the end of the hunt!!! haha!!!!

We are in unit 62 camped on Snipe Mtn. We have been here since Friday and haven't seen anything even resembling a shooter. Which unit are you guys in? This is my first post so if that isn't proper etiquette to ask where you are than I apologize. We have been glassing until our eyes bleed but haven't seen anything bigger than a forky and not near the number of even does and small bucks that I would have imagined.

I've enjoyed your posts and congrats on your buck. Me or my buddy would kill to see a buck like that.

Raven is your coyote hunting partner now.He he you guys did well on the geese looks fun.Tell RA this hunt is going like our antelope hunt this year pass pass pass but did find a shooter on some private ground imagine that.
Just keep at it maybe something will be found maybe not.
Barbie went home with Ktc now I need to find a new guide.The three of us not seeing many bucks on public but the hunters have sure thinned out.

I think I found a shooter just before dark.Please send money he is on private and trying to get access.Dont tell my wife I am going mule deer crazy now.Saddlesore and I glassed up alot of bucks before dark but seeing only does on public this place will drive a guy nuts.Oh well watching world series tonight hey ktc how many days have I been here?Ha

I was glad to see the picture saying saddlesore had scored it has been 5 days since our group fired a shot.

I gave ar some pictures of my buck to post. No 2buck, not your buck, my buck! Ha!

I feel like chit I had to get back to get horses, family, and a deer taken care of, but I had to do it. When I talked to them on the phone last night they were watching the series and laughing still. I was kind of missing those yahoos at that point.

Come on Buck and Monte!!!! Kills some tomorrow! I will put in a good word to God for you tonight? Good luck guys!

BTW; my dog chewed off some of Barbie's hair. She never b!tched a bit! She has been in bed sleeping since Tuesday night. Hopefully I can get a pic of her soon. She wants to help butcher the buck.

Ha! I really don't have a good explanation for that other than the cape started slipping before I got home. I was going to use it on an old family heirloom buck but I blew it! The meat is sure good though.
