I think I quit!

OK, I don't know who I pissed off but it is not funny anymore! This year I have just about seen it all. This year I have had stalks on large bucks busted over and over again. The first was by a 6x6 bull elk, then a coyote, pack train of horses, cows, other hunters and some skittish does but today I had the weirdest yet. I had just spotted a smoker buck with a few does in a very vulnerable spot. he was about 450 yards away and i wanted to close to distance to around 300 or so before I shot. As I was making my stalk, i heard something behind me coming over the mountain at a very fast pace. When I looked up, I saw a helicopter buzz right over me and the deer. Needless to say, the buck was not impressed and bolted into the oaks below us. Game over! I stood there in disbelief at what had just happened. I thought to my self "you have got to be kidding me" what else could possibly happen to ruin my hunts this year? So as I watched the helicopter, he circled back around and I could seen 4 guys in it and they were all looking right at me from a height of about 150 feet AGL. Then they landed on a peek about 300 yards away and three of them got out and the pilot took off to the North. I thought what have I done are they after me? I watched them through my binos and they were looking at me too. I didn't notice any guns on them and two were in florecent green and one in hunter orange. I lifted up my arms at them in a show of displeasure at what had just happened and they just waived at me. I waived back with the middle finger and they took off and I never saw them again. Mind you this was all done at 8:00 am during prime hunting time. I think I will go back tomorrow and see if a plane will crash into the canyon i'm hunting just before I get a shot off or maybe an asteroid will hit taking out the big buck. Ordinarily I would say no way that would ever happen but this year i'm not so sure, everything else has!

What next??

Suprised you made it through your entire post without getting interrupted. Bet your old lady isn't too happy bout your timing either. Keep at it- not too many more bad things can happen to you.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-08 AT 03:13PM (MST)[p]that is some bad luck why didn't you go after the buck that's how i scored on mine this year i was watching this buck for a matter of a minute waiting to close in on him when an atv came down the atv trail i was standing on (not his fault)but the deer took off before he noticed it so i headed down the draw and shot the desent 3x4 it sucked getting back up the draw but after it was said and done it was worth it then again my buck was not spooked by a freaking helicopter sorry to hear that is just crappy luck dont ever quit though

Well, I was so busy trying to watch the deer and what was going on I didn;t even think of it. Being a pilot you think I would have noticed it but I was so focused it slipped by me. I can tell you the color of it though:) (Green, yellow & white) I think they were surveyers by the looks of it. I went over to where they landed and they put pink ribbons on the peak as well as at other locations along the ridge. As to the other post, I didn't go after him because the oak brush he dove into is so thick you could hide elephants in there and never see them. When I was young and dumb I would try that with nothing to show for it but blisters and aching knees! I will say that this buck is my nemesis. I spotted him last year same time on the same ridge, by the same tree and the same day of the hunt. (Thursday)Couldnt get a shot at him as we danced for an hour so it was cool to see him back bigger and better than ever. Maybe we'll meet again yet year same time same place!

BUT WAS IT THE MOSSBACK COPTER???

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

I had horrible luck this year as well. I had a nice six point coming into my brothers calls. He was just about to step into an opening at 24 yards when herd of cattle (they are allowed to graze public land here) came stampeding up the hill. I think the bull was as shocked as I was, he turned and bolted.

Then I found an 15-16 tall antelope not sure on score but definately P&Y buck. He was right next to some trees that would allow me to get into bow range. I stalked up got in range and was just waiting for a doe to clear so I could draw and a group of about 25 harley's came roaring by. They saw the group of about 20 goats and decided to stop and check them out. The next thing I saw was dust.

Later that day I located another P&Y goat a little further from the road. After rotting in the sun for an hour (with the buck at 76 yards) waiting for the buck to move closer to water a truck pulled up and blew the whole deal.

Normally 450 yrd = dead deer but there was a real stiff wind and tall brush that made the shot no good from that spot & distance. And no it was not the Mossy copter.

I went back to the same canyon today and wouldn't you know it the same helicopter crew busted my hunt again! I spotted another good buck two ridges over from the one I hunted yesterday and before I could even get my pack back on I heard in coming. I thought "oh you have got to be kidding me!" It flew no more that 50 feet above the deer as he flew over the saddle. He then made a U-turn and came back and landed on the same peak as yesterday. I ran to try and catch up with the guys he dropped off but they had dropped off the canyon and into the timber. I could hear them blabbing all the way down but to tired to chase them down. I did get the N number this time. N-CFYD There may have been a letter in between the F&Y, I couldn't tell. The last time I saw the buck he had crossed 4 canyons and headed for the pines. I was too tired to follow him.

I had a hawk bust me one time. couldn't believe it. Sneeking on my stomach for about an hour across an opening. I was almost in archery range. I needed to close another 30yrds to get to 60 yards. When I noticed a hawk right above me. As I watched I was thinkin that I should take a picture but didn't want to make to much movement to spook the buck. As Im watching the hawk, all of a sudden he swoops down and buzzes right over the top of beaded buck. The deer jumped up and ran off. Going from something beutiful to watch wanting to take a picture to wishing I had a shotgun. Its amazing how things can turn for the worst with no warning.

I am not sure what area you are in but they did bust several pot farms over the last week in Utah and they used helicopters to get into some of the areas. I know Sanpete County had a couple of crops that got nailed.

Probably not what happened to you, but possible.

OK. The wind plays a HUGE roll in distance shooting. Sorry about that dam Heli. What are the chances of the same Whirli bird blowing your hunt twice? Keep at it though!
