My daughter got it done last night in the bookcliffs.. tough hunt know a few guys went home with tag in hand and saw quite of few shoot bulls we wouldn't shoot on a general hunt but oh well...

Also wondering how it went. Passes about 14 trucks hunting up Danials Canyon on our way to the Berry fishing.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-18 AT 06:56PM (MST)[p]Here on the San Juan it was a pretty rough hunt and I hunt it every year, It's my favorite hunt. Alot of smaller and broken bulls taken. We had chances at good bulls and I saw more "good" ie. 330-340 bulls than any other year, but almost all of them will make it till next year...never saw a bull over 350 unbroken this year.

I agree, But, our cow to Bull Ratio hasn't dramatically changed. I think the drought had a lot to do with it also. But that's Just a guess. I hunted and scouted from before Archery all thru late hunt. With the Heat and drought, You never saw less rut activity! If you blinked you missed the couple days of peak rut. which would have lead me to think, Less fighting-fewer broken bulls. I watched a couple groups of large bulls that never pushed cows and seemed to stay in bachelor groups. I watched them for weeks cause in with them was the biggest 5 point I've ever seen. He stayed in a canyon with 2 other bulls and only once was there any cows near them, and they were with a bull that pushed them thru. It was a weird year. Long term, our numbers and top end quality are bad. But I think next year has a chance to be Very good for 350-380 bulls. Part of me likes that, with small chance of going over 400, money hunters will go elsewhere. And average Joe's can still have the hunt of a lifetime. I mean honestly for most guys a 350 bull is still a dream bull. That's not how The Unit should be going, Downhill. But it is our reality for the foreseeable future.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-18 AT 04:45PM (MST)[p]I don't get on here much anymore. My daughter had a late Wasatch rifle tag. At fourteen, this was also her very first elk tag as well. She tagged out opening day thanks to a very dedicated MM member (who shall remain nameless unless he chooses to have his private message box flooded again)! Same guy that helped me in 2012...and my wife in 2015 though.

She had a great time despite the very cold temps. She only got to hunt one day and now has the oldest bull in our house. By the end of the trip, she started getting the hang of being a sarcastic smart-ass like the rest of us. It was a good time indeed!

elkass - "And when all Bulls are Broken what does this Mean?

What does the management of cows have to do with bulls being broken? I'm confused by that one.

My daughter had a La Sal tag. We hunted hard and put on miles but came home with tag soup. Had a few pegged the day before it opened, but never did see them during the hunt. After the hunt started we did not see another elk within a mile of us. Not for lack of effort, but we still had a great time and looking forward to January when we can start applying for the next adventure.

Congrats to all the scored.

What you say makes sense. But I feel like your telling me to ?embrace the suck? in order to steer money guys away. No offense. But I like your post. Warranted a reply.

I won't go off on spike and cow hunting. But I will raise this question..... how is it fair to auction off state tags to the highest bidder? Don?t get me wrong. I'm not a democrat. But a couple units I like have landowner tags go on sale. I'd gladly spend the 5-10k every year. But... ya know what... the millionaires tie all of them up every year so that nobody else has a chance for purchase. They buy all and re sell. I know this. To whom they choose.
If they gonna sell them fine... but it ain?t right the same guy gets all the tags. Every year. Landowner tags for one measily 660 section.... opening up 1000?s of acres. If they gonna do that s}%+, they need to make the damn tags fair Chase. Not canned.
Don?t get me started on auction tags. SFW reminds me of the Irish mob off of that show SOA. with all due respect... in my humble opinion.

Apologize for highjavking post to whine. Congrats to all on the late hunt. I had a late tag as well. Tagged out. Not what I wanted. But nice and had a lot of fun.
Have a great turkey day!

Wounds are still fresh. Plus I've had a bad day. I'll give facts tomorrow. I speak now I may get banned or offed by the state or SFW.

Conclusion.... very sad. Saw more bulls on the farm. Saw 10x more horses than the 100 cow elk seen entire time.

Broken antlers could not be because more bulls could it??
Boottracks did state he saw more 330/340 bulls than ever what does that mean!

Top end bulls do die out a unit is not always going to be carrying older class bulls and there is alot of reason's for that not just hunting.
Elkassassin you are saying the skies is falling too often.

ruble What are you even talking about if they are private landowners permits they are selling it is up too them who they sell them too it is not your land they are hunting it is private property.

Your ignorant.

Yeah they own 660 of private. But the landowners permits allow them to hunt entire public unit.

Depending on what your talking about CWMU or Landowner tags.
CWMU the permit holder hunts only the private property.
Landowner tag hunters hunt the unit but during the specific hunt they bought the permit for.

Either way the permit is still being sold by the private landowner or in some cases Landowner Association. So it is there choice who to sell too.

I know all that. I know the landowners and who buys them. Not questioning the law. I'm questioning the fairness of it. The landowners has a section and sells landowner permits, good for the entire unit. Some are specific seasons, some are multi season, some vouchers for season choice. Bottom line the hunter hunts entire unit. I'm fine by that. What I'm challenging is that a select few tie up every tag each and every year. If they are hunting public land then the public should have a crack at purchasing these tags.

Let me give my two cents on the bookcliffs unit late hunt.

First off, this was the first time I've ever hunted in Utah. I was not the hunter my 20 year old daughter was.

I had never stepped foot into the Utah bookcliffs until Monday November 12th.. I hunt a lot and kinda know what elk do this time of year so I figured I could find my daughter a decent bull...

Late Sunday night it snowed about 1? of fresh snow and Monday morning I drove to the very end of steer ridge without cutting a single elk track all along the whole seep ridge road to the end of steer. However I saw many head of horses which I do not consider to be wild horses because there have been many years of ranchers throwing studs out to breed better horses back in the day you could gather wild horses. Now we just have a bunch of horses that the crying leftist whiners have now way of dealing with except gathering them and paying ranchers to harbor them until they die at the cost of every single hard working taxpaying US citizen and probably a few illegals using a legal social security card... lol

That being said I know it was an extremely dry year but between the horses and the obvious over grazing of cattle which was unbelievable the amount of cattle I saw.. hope they don't get a big snow or that guys gonna loose a bunch of cows.. state land managed by the state of Utah I'm sure has some kind of dates and deadlines for cattle to be off and this guy either doesn't abide or doesn't care which is another complete issue to complain about..

So with all that being said I knew I had to find some tougher country away from the roads and soon as I did I began finding bulls.. Tuesday I found a group of 11 bachelor bulls in a drainage about 6 miles back in from the road.. I watched them for two days until the night of the 14th which my daughter was finally able to get away from college and come to the hunt. Well wouldn't you know Thursday morning found us back in the drainage of the 11 bulls one of which was in the 340-50 class, to find that not a single bull was left looming... what could of happened I just watched them until dark??? We waited until about 10am to see if they may show up from somewhere but nothing. So we walked up into the area and what did we find a big ole set of Tom lion tracks and he had obviously moved the bull out of the area.. back to the drawing board.
Friday we decided to head out into the desert to see if we could get lucky, only to find a few cows and a raghorn.
Saturday found us heading towards Colorado trying to find some rough country that looked like it would hold a bull.. we found some and in the evening we found 6 bulls and she was able to connect on a nice 6x6.. however it was not the big one as he was just out of sight when we shot but soon appeared and all we could do is smile about it... haha.
Overall, I'm sure it's not as good as it once was, but if you get away from the roads and walk a little. Which from what I saw most of the people only looked at country they could drive their side by side to the edge and look over.. which is fine makes easy hunting for the guy not afraid to work a little...
You can still kill a respectable bull in the bookcliffs if you hunt.

The state of Utah in my opinion needs to address the over grazing by horses and cattle in the area. Plus from my few days of walking they should issue everyone with a deer or elk tag a lion tag for free and kill as many as they possibly can.. redicoulous to whine about your deer problem and then protect the cats???
Good luck utah

I've got to say, this is complete and total hog wash. (all except one line, at least) Bulls "fight harder" and therefore break their antlers? C'mon man. If you truly believe that, I've got some seriously awesome ocean front real estate bordering the Grand Canyon down in Arizona I'm sure you'll be interested in. It comes equipped with tin foil hats and all.

Everyone knows what neck of the woods I carouse, while it was a tough late hunt overall, believe you me it's a great time to have a snatch tag.

Looked at around 1000 head of elk, bulls were busted and scattered from top to bottom. We had an usually strong 2nd cycle and multiple bulls were exhibiting rut behavior all week long.

Been missing your pics this year, berrysblaster! Quit holding out on us.

elkass,

I don't know what you are seeing or not seeing. I'm saying that your theory on why the bulls are busted up this year (except your cursory mentioning the drought) is complete hogwash.

The Books may be down. You might be 100% correct in that. But you've made some crazy claims, including that you willingness to put money on something and then refused to define what that was exactly. I have set foot on the Book Cliffs for exactly zero days of my life. I have no dog in that fight. I just call BS when I see it.

Concur.

Way overgrazed. I thought the cattle were supposed to be pulled off by oct 1. I could be wrong on date. But they were there through mid November at least.

The horses are a joke. I spoke with a state warden. He said they are very frustrated with horses and try to push thinning them out. But it's a BLM jurisdiction. And they won't touch it. They graze to the root and destroy the ground. Their numbers are out of control.
I know the tribe used to round a bunch up years ago. Not sure if they still do. And no they are not mustangs. They are runaways, and have multiplied.
Too bad the tribe or something couldn't go in and thin them out.

Hey Niller!

If the Truth Be Known!

Not BS From Estimates blah blah blah!

And Every Hunter was under a mandatory turn a tooth in for age!

My Bet Still Stands!

I Say there were more that didn't Fill their Tags!

And The Age Class of Kills was Way Lower this year than in previous Years!

Don't get me Wrong,This has been Showing for several Years!

It Really Shined This year!

You wanna Raise the Bet?

Or Lower it?

Just an observation of mine, I just finished up a late season bull hunt and saw more cows on the unit then I have for the past several years. And the bulls were more busted up than usual...

The tribe could, they fall under a different set of rules than the white man... they could gather every single horse on the res and make dog food out of them if they would just do it... but that's only on the reservation but it would be a start

Well your right because a lot of those horses came from that tribal river country. If they went in and wiped that herd out it may be like cutting the head off the snake.
Well and I wonder.... books is all exterior boundary Rez. Too bad there wasn?t some sort of loop hole there to allow getting rid of them. They are all ferrel animals. No doubt.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think they shutdown all the killer plants in the USA.The only killer plant I know of is in Mexico. We could take care of the horses locally if the DWR And the BLM would turn their back. They are costing the taxpayers millions of dollars every year. You can thank the rock lickers and the lefties for that.

Just giving you a hard time Ruble.
I normally disagree with all the hammering on the public grazers and would stand up for the cattleman and public land grazing but I will agree with Ruble this year the grazing was excessive I actually saw one cattleman hauling cattle that had came down back up the mountain on September 25.
I understand the Ranchers did not have much feed considering the drought but they wear not doing there cattle any good by keeping them up the mountain some of the cattle was looking poor.
But I personally thought the deer was looking pretty healthy and I thought the fawns looked a little bigger in body size.

This is actually harder than you think.

The Navajo tribe tried to start up a horse hunt this year to help thin the horses out and the anti's got into such a frenzy they ended up scrapping the idea.

There Idea wouldn't of helped any but at least it was something.

Horses are a major major issue in alot of area and nothing is being done about it because they are scared of the lawsuits that will follow.

Something needs to be done though.

A Few years back!

We had a few making it to the Auction!

Most of these Guys are Dead now!

Then they changed the Law!

You just can't make Dog food out of them anymore!

And the local Steak houses here in the Basin can't cook you a steak anymore!

These So Called Wild Horses are Thicker in the Book Cliffs than I've ever seen them!

When You see more Wild Horses than you do Deer Somethings Not Right!

I Doubt the DWR or BLM is gonna do anything for us!

22 250 to the liver. I wouldn't do it and don't condone it of course. But heard a rumor it works and they'll still make it a mile or so before tipping over....

Na. A 223. Ammo is cheaper !!

I'm afraid a guy would do some serious time if he took matters in his own hands.

Heading up Sunday through Friday this week after Thanksgiving. Hope to have some pictures and a great story to tell. Unit 41 Idaho!

the late season this year was BY FAR the best I have seen in over 7 years! big bulls all over and massive herds of cows of which I have not seen in over 20 years.

late season= AMAZING HUNT!!

I dont post much on here but holy smokes if you had a rough hunt on the late this year I truly question why.....

Utah late hunts are the BOMB!! if you are not seeing bulls on these late hunts then i am completely confused. best year I have seen in well over 20 years. the elk in the wasatch, manti, and nebo seem to be in better shape (including number of cows and calves) than I have seen in recent years... deer on the other hand is a whole different story..

Elk I don't think lack of cows is the reason for broken bulls. I think it's more that the lack of water this year has antler on the hollow side rather than dense.

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

nothing to write home about that's for sure. I would say the units I mentioned above are in worse shape for deer than I have ever seen. Very poor... and your comments on the book cliffs in other posts I share as well. that place used to be amazing, but they have managed to bring that unit to a worse condition than it was before they closed it for 5 years (many years ago)...

I know one ofDavid Virostkos guides killed a tank. One of the best bulls I've seen. 416 I believe is what they said

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

I hunted the late book cliffs with a friend and it was just fine. I heard terrible things about the book cliffs this year. Maybe we got into the only spot with elk. But there were plenty of bulls and elk.

It looks like it's been a good year for those that pulled late tags. Seen a lot of great bulls taken.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-07-19 AT 04:46PM (MST)[p]I drew the 2019 Book cliffs late season elk hunt! And I'm going back and forth on what side I should start scouting on? Is there there more elk that move to the east side that time of year? Or does the west side hold the same amount of elk as the east side? I was also wondering if it is smart to hunt high that time of year around Moon ridge on the west side or the Top of bitter creek rd on the east side?
