Deer population sucks Management Sucks and my attitude isn't all that great right now either. I also hate the stupid bull-buck combo tag I think that didn't do general rifle hunters any favorers this year! OK i feel better any one else want to vent lol.... Oh ya ATVs and Lazy a holes who drive them suck too

What do you mean? Utah's deer management is the envy of every western state... Better luck next year. You just need to hunt harder and away from the roads. ;-)

The one that got me the other day was a DWR guy on the news explaining that the dry conditions are very noisy, that is the reason the check station is not seeing any deer. Nothing to do with management...You all are too noisy.

Utahelkaholic,
Sounds like you need to hunt a little, and not worry about everyone else. There are deer and elk everywhere, as long as you get off the road, and really hunt. Everytime Ive gone out, Ive seen good animals. Great deer, and a few bulls. Just havent gotten the bull I want, but I know hes out there somewhere. If more people would actually hike, and HUNT, theyd be complaining less, and posting memorable stories more oft than not.
Just my $.02

This is my first year ever hunting the famous NE region. After this year I think I understand a little better Prisms feelings about UT deer hunting :) I am curious to see what success rates will be for this year?

I'm with you... I absolutely hate hunting in Utah. Exspecially on the cache. I hunt extremely hard and hike my guts out and scout all summer. I quit hunting on the cache because it sucks so much, and if you do happen to find a nice deer some other hunter either lucks into getting it or screws it up for you. And fish and game won't do anything about it. I know for a fact that they only checked 6 small bucks that came out of logan canyon but somehow every year the fish and game find some way to lie about it and say that a ton of deer were shot. They all need to stop worrying about their paychecks and start helping out on our deer population.

Daxter,

Glad you got to experience deer hunting at its "best..." :)

Keep up the good work Utah!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-08 AT 05:19PM (MST)[p]I know the post is negative and I knew I would get the typical hunt harder response lol don't worry I hunt my guts out and you are right I never stay buy roads I always hike in and get some good distance between me and the rest of Utah and it works great. I have killed some great bucks doing exactly that... funny thing every time I kill a nice buck I love Utah JK ah sometimes you just gotta ##### a little then shut up and go hunting. Good luck to you guys hope you kill a monster. Curley you have seen great deer EVERY TIME you have been out.... ya you shot your deer this year I can tell by the annoyingly positive attitude you got lol good luck on your bull

Hey Dax, I was kind of waiting to see the harvest reports as this was my first year hunting the NE region as well and didn't even see a buck... lot of does, though.

There are good and bad spots in every region. I hunted NE region and saw 6 bucks, 6 does on opening morning alone. But everyone else on the mountain didn't see anything cuz they mostly drive around.

>God I hate Utah Deer management

Think on the bright side tabbyhntr, at least Utah has goood habitat. Who needs deer when you have great habitat.

Mike

Oh I'm on the brightside believe me, I've seen a mature deer every time I've gone out hunting for the last 10 years. Hell I wish everyone would roadhunt and leave the backcountry for me! Lol

Norther General

Here's my two cents on the Northern region for this year.

Anyone who bought one of those "extra available OTC" tags knowing the horrible winter kill we just had, have absolutely NO room to complain about the full boxes of ammo they still have left.

And if you did find a spike or a fork horn to kill, i hope wont be complaining when there's no bucks next year!

IMO...they should NEVER have sold the remaining OTC Norther region tags after the draw!!

Ok, beat me up now!! :*

It is a tough issue, I love being able to hunt every year, but I do wish quality was better. I know that there are big bucks in every general season region, but some areas are better than others. The area I hunted in had a buck to doe ratio below 15/100 last year, and lost a large portion of the fawns last winter too, making both yearlings and mature bucks scarce. I am not complaining about crowding, I actually think it is less crowded in UT than CO. I agree that it isn't hard to get away from the crowds in UT.

I AGREE WITH PUNK!!!

ALL YOU PISSCUTTIN BEACHES THAT COULDN'T FIND A DECENT BUCK AND THEN SHOT A PISSCUTTER YOU OUGHT TO HAVE YOUR HEADS EXAMINED!!!

TALK ABOUT PISS POOR MANAGEMENT AT ITS BEST!!!

THERE YOU HAVE IT FROM AVERAGE TARDS!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

The bucks and bulls combo tag had nothing to do with a bad general hunt. The last three years the deer have started migrating off the north slope before the general rifle hunt starts making it a tough time finding deer on the general rifle.

You should try and hunt a couple of the units me and sonofthesouth hunt here in NM! On a 7 day hunt you might see 2 or 3 deer and then again you might not see any at all! Oh and BTW the 2 or 3 might be just does! I think some of you guys that hunt for an hour in the morning and then drive around a little during the day, or all day maybe, and then hunt again in the evening should do alittle gut check and ask yourselves just how hard are you hunting!?!

Talked to one of the fish and game guys manning a checking station out your way Bessy. He said that as of last Monday they had checked 60 deer and 6 of those were what they would consider mature deer. I agree with Prism.....we have to be the envy of every Western state when it comes to our deer herds.

It's always an adventure!!!

AWLB!!!

REMEMBER ONE THING THOUGH!!!

THERE WERE 10OO'S OF PUMPKINS OUT & ABOUT!!!

60 PISSCUTTERS CHECKED!!!

AND UH......................MATURE BUCKS???

A MATURE BUCK IN THE BASIN IS A BUCK THAT HAS MADE IT PAST MOTL!!!

((( MILK ON THE LIP!!! )))

GOOD GAWD!!!

THEY REACH AGE 3 & THE DWR SCREAMS MATURE!!!

THIS $HIT AMAZES ME!!!

JUST LIKE ANOTHER MM'ER POSTED!!!

NOW THE DWR IS BLAMING DRY CONDITIONS FOR A PISS POOR HUNT!!!

THERES MORE TO IT THAN THAT!!!

WE LOST ALOT OF OUR DEER LAST WINTER!!!

WE LOST WAY MORE TO ROADKILLS!!!

WE LOST WAY MORE TO COYOTES!!!

I SEEN IT FIRST HAND EARLY THIS SPRING WHEN ME & MY SON WERE GOBBLER HUNTING,I SEEN HUNDREDS OF DEAD DEER/CARCASSES!!!

BUT THE HUNT GOES ON AS USUAL & WE POUND THE PISSCUTTERS THAT ARE LEFT!!!

WAFJ!!!

MAYBE Pro WILL GET IT FIXED BY THE HUNT OF 2009???

bobcat OVER & OUT!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

In my humble opinion, I think the DWR has 2 options if they want to improve the deer quality in Utah. Take a Colorado approach and limit the number of tags, or implement measures to limit success.
Here comes my soap box. If you want to limit success, think Archery. Bowhunters have a dismal success rate(don't get me started), spend more days in the field, spend more on equipment, have a lower incidence of game violations, the list goes on. I know the argument, 16,000 archers, 60,000 rifle hunters, the demand and the revenue do not add up. Let's face it, the revenue issue is easy, demand is the real question. How do you keep rifle hunters hunting and happy? Therein lies the rub. As a group they will have to decide, quality or opportunity. If they want both, apply for rifle draws and hunt the off years with a bow.

They need to shut it down to no hunting or only half of half of the tags they did this year. I cant believe these idiots had a hunt after ;ast winter. This has been said before. ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not trying to ruffle any archers feathers here, i totally respect archers and did it myself for several years, but.....

People are going to hunt regardless. You go make the entire state archery only, your begging for a disaster in wounded and lost deer. If that is the only weapon they can have to hunt with, there will be WAY more "bad archers" (un experienced)afield than "good".
The mere thoughts of 60,000 archers in the filed makes my skin crawl.

I'm ready for the punches..... ;-)

Try this on for size. A myriad of smaller game units similar to Colorado. Limit permits to increase quality. (Or simply limit rifle permits) Don?t deliver Archery and Rifle permits based on demand, but on success. Give a significantly disproportionate amount of the available tags to archers while the unit age class improves. Then reverse this trend giving more rifle/muzzleloader opportunities while beginning the process all over on other units. End result, hunting opportunities increase, quality increases, revenue increases. Quality units are able to develop without removing hunters or revenue. Downside, no more ?traditional? hunting areas.
What do ya think?

I didn't buy a tag this year and it sounds like I made the right decision.

I wish they would only allow youth to shoot "Pisscutters". Over 18 adults, can get cheaper meat at Smith's.
