Lets hear how your bullet performed this year!!!

1. Caliber of gun, bullet type and grain
2. Shot distance
3. Entance and exit area's of the animal.
4. Entrance / exit size of holes
5. Were you satisfied with the bullet performance?

I will get things rolling!

1. Wifes first deer..a 3 point. 300 WSM, 180 grain ballistic tip

2. 225 yards

3. Entrance / Exits behind both shoulders. Shot broadside.

4. 1" entrance hole and 3" exit hole.

5. Completly satisfied. Wanted big holes!!!!!!

1. 270 WSM, 140 grain federal accubond
2. 275 yds
3. entrance and exit right behind front shoulder
4. both holes the size of a pencil
5. not at all satisfied

shot a lab sized 2 point and tracked it at least 1000 yards before recovering the animal.

Not quite done yet but here is whats happened so far,

My son shot a monster buck this year with my 300 Weatherby using a 200 grain Nosler Accubond bullet with a muzzle velocity of 3050. He shot from 150 yards and the buck was perfectly broadside. The bullet entered 2 inches above the point of the bucks elbow and exited the other side in nearly the same position. The bullet left a 30 caliber entrance hole, and about a 1 inch exit hole. The buck went about 20 yards, then tipped over. I was satisfied with the bullet performance, but it is probably a little heavy for Mule Deer. It's a good all-around bullet for long range Deer and Elk.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-08 AT 03:37PM (MST)[p]30-06 165 gr Barnes TSX performed perfect through the front shoulder and wedged in the hide on the off side.(Deer)

7mm ultra, 180 gr berger vld's, cow buffalo, all 3 shots under 200 yards, 1st shot hit the big bone in her lower shoulder 4" hole don't think it penetrated to lungs. 2nd and 3rd, 3" enterance no exit. Not sure if I like them. I know they are supposed to be more for long range proformance but if they wouldn't preform close? I don't know. Still killed her though only went 40 yards down hill after second shot. third shot was for insurance.

.280 shooting 140 TBBC at 3050 fps
mule deer at 584 yards
entrance wound 1 inch exit 3 inches
Completely satisfied and always have been.

Dads deer
1.7mm 140 Nosler ballistic tip
2.350
3.right behind the shoulder DID NOT HIT THE SHOULDER
4.1'' both
5. those thing hit so hard the only meat that was good was the hind quarters and the back part of the back strap. from where the bullet hit to half way up his neck was jello..

Elkslayer,

I wanted to go bonded in my rifles so I tried Accubonds and Sciroccos. My 300 WM shoots 180 Sciroccos well and the 270 shoots the 130 grain Accubonds well. My daughter killed an antelope last year with the 270 and killed it in its tracks at about 100 yards. I remember the damage was good, but not excessive.

My Colorado deer I shot in his bed at 288 with the 300 and 180 grain Sciroccos. He tried to get up and I shot him again unneccessarily. I found one slug. Both lungs were shredded and his heart exploded. The Scirocco was 180 grains and is now 149 grains (82% retention if my fuzzy math is right?). It mushroomed perfectly. Again, lots of damage but not excessive. The Sciroccos also worked perfectly on two Dutton bulls, a 165 Utah buck, and a NM antelope.

I am sold on the Sciroccos. I see no need to ever use anything else. I get 5/8" groups and they seem to be deadly. My 270 hates Sciroccos but likes the Accubonds. I really expect the same results?

50 cal. Muzzleloader
285 gr.Barnes Spitfire MZ w/ sabot
1850 fps. at muzzle
Mature Bull Elk shot at 68 yds.

1st. shot, passthrough double lung, broadside with broken ribs.
2nd. shot, lung shot that broke the offside shoulder and hung in the hide without completly exiting. The bull took two steps and dropped in his tracks.

Perfect expansion

270, reminton core lok 130grain
shot 1 - 65 yrds busted front leg at knee
shot 2 - 120 yrds right behind the shoulder, I knew that he was dead but would not go down
shot 3 - 207 yrds (used the range finder) right behind the shoulder out through the neck
shot 2 hit a rib and tore up the heart no exit wound
shot 3 pencil size entrance, 1" exit, dropped in its tracks
not happy with bullet performance

300 WSM.
180 gr barnes mrx
408 yard shot.
First time in years I gut shot a deer. Small entrance hole. 2" exit hole. The buck only went 40 yards and went down. Wondered why I hit him a little far back so I went and shot my rifle a couple days later and found one of my scope mounts had worked its way a little loose. Explains a bit. Considering it was a bad shot and the buck still only went 40 yards I am impressed with the bullet performance.

280 Rem, shooting 150 gr Nosler Partitions in Federal Premium.

38 yard shot on bull elk, double lung pass thru. Then a 45 yard shot on the same bull as he wheeled, entered behind the first rib and exited thru the shoulder.

80 yard shot on a 4 point mule deer. Pass thru, behind one shoulder, destroyed the heart, exited breaking the off shoulder.

I do like the Partitions....

7mm Remington, shooting 140 gr barnes mrx.

6 point bull Elk

350 yards running away 1 shot in the back of the neck dropped him.

Shattered all the bones in the neck. I was finding fragments of bone all the way to the windpipe. I am very happy with the performance of Barnes.

Very happy with the performance.

VI Blacktail

300 RUM, 180 gr Accubonds, 3275 fps
150 yd downhill shot, bedded, quartering towards me.
Hit high just behind the shoulder, took out the lung, the liver, went through the paunch, exited low behind the last rib on the far side, broke his back leg....and then richoceted back up into the ham. Deer jumped up, took a step and fell over

Entrance hole was 30 cal, lung and liver jellied, paunch hit, exit hole ~ twice the size of entrance. Avg bloodshot damage to the ribs.
Bullet weight 142 gr.

Very happy with the performance. A little over kill on the small deer we have here, but I just moved and could not find my .270 loads.

Cheers

12 yr. old daughter 1st muley 1 shot 1 kill!

not much to choose from in bullet weight. i have had this gun
for 17 yrs. it is very easy to shoot, and has killed all the deer i have put in front of it regardless of bullet manufactuer.all animals killed with this gun have been within 375 yds.

.243 Win, probably the same rounds as Slcmuley. Winchester 100 grain. 12 y/o sons first coues buck, 235 yards across canyon facing away and downhill, between the shoulder blades and out the chest. Dropped in it's tracks. My kids have killed three deer with it and I've killed seven with it (some with 100 grain Nosler Partitions). The 243 is a great round.

I got a .25/06 in trade a couple of years ago and decided to use it for deer this year. I loaded up some 90 gr. Sierra hollow points with HMR 4350 at @ 3100 fps.

A mature buck comes out 200 yards below me and I shoot.....no reaction. I shoot again and the deer takes off running for the trees. WTF??? I thought I must have missed and was about ready to bust the rifle over a rock and go back to packing my old reliable 7 mag.

I went down to where the deer was standing a found one spot of blood. I followed the tracks into the trees and found the deer piled up dead. I had hit him both shots through the ribs and both shots made clean pass throughs with only one rib broken. Pin holes going in and only slightly bigger coming out......but no blood trail to speak of.

I haven't hunted enough with the caliber or bullet to know whether this was a freak hit or a common occurance, but normally I would expect a little more reaction from the animal with type of hits he took. I like the gun and I like the caliber so I'll probably use it again next season, but I lost some confidence in it's ability to stop a deer.

7mm-08 Tikka T3 lite
140 gr Accubond
Reloads with a special blend of Hodgens Smokeless Powder
Federal Gold Medal Match Primers
220 yd shot on a Cow Elk (Lead Cow).
Topped with a Swarovski 4-10 power scope
Dropped the elk in its tracks.
Aimed half way up the front leg.

Entrance hole was the size of the original bullet and exit
was somewhere like 1/2". I would use this gun again on any elk!!! I was very satisfied......

300 WSM Federal loaded 180 accubond

Wyo. deer 470 yds. Three shots one through the heart one through the lungs and one in the upper back/spine.

Deer was dead on his feet after first shot but I like shooting my gun I guess. Heart was turned inside out and exit holes were 1.5"

Utah deer 254 yds. head on shot took out neck and spine. Buck dropped in his tracks.

Very satisfied but I'm loading some tsx and mrx to see how they do.

Wyoming mule deer
300 wby handloads 168g tsx
590 yds -- One shot -- Dropped and didnt move again.
entrance hole same size as bullet, low neck just above the shoulder; exit hole 1 1/2", just below ear (deer was uphill)

By the way...I was in Wyo with Peakfreak; That dude can shoot. 470 yds,First shot took out the heart, deer started deathrun down the hill, Peakfreak hammered him two more times(on the run)both lethal shots. Pretty impressive.

There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

Some of you guys can place your shots further than I can see! lol

All shots: Savage 110, Leupold VXIII, 30-06, Winchester Super X 165 gr. pointed soft pionts.

Daughter's antelope:
Small buck, 150 yards
1/2" entrance/ 2" exit
Through both shoulders, dropped him on the spot.

My antelope:
Average buck, 250 yards
1" entrance, 2-3" exit
Double lung, dropped him on the spot.

Deer:
Average buck, 150 yards
1" entrance, no exit
Quartering toward me, it penetrated the shoulder and appeared to tumble at some point, as there was massive internal damage.

He went maybe 60-80 yards. The bullet mushroomed well and appeared to have retained most of its mass. This is only the second animal I've shot with this combo that I didn't have an exit wound. The other was a large bull elk several years ago.

Elk:
Large calf, 100 yards
1" entrance, 2" exit
Entered through the ribs, left lung, clipped a bit of the heart, and exited though the ribs and clipped a bit of muscle in the opposite should. He trotted uphill about 60 yards and fell.

I am satisfied with the performance of my rifle, scope, cartridge selection. Even the buck with no exit wound, left a solid blood trail.

Kevin D Great caliber for deer. I shoot the 257 Roy but have shot the 25-06 in the past. Try loading it with either some 117 gr sierra BT or the 120gr nosler partition. I have had great success with these bullets.

Happy trails

.25-06 shooting 110 gr. Winchester Supreme Accubonds

375 yards slightly up hill... hit him just behind the shoulder with a complete pass through. Entry wound was the diameter of the bullet, the exit wound was about 2.5". One shot did the job.

I've been a Federal guy in the past, but my Browning likes the Winchester Accubonds better than the Federals. I was very pleased with the performance.

1. 2007 Fred Bear Code 72lb. draw, 30" Gold Tip Hunter XT, 100 Grain Grim Reaper.
2. 58 yards quartering away.
3. Entered just behind the ribs on the right side, exited out just in front of left shoulder.
4. 5" wound on right side where arrow entered, 2" hole where arrow exited.
5. Very satisfied, shot Reapers for years, accurate and deadly. Deer ran 60 yards before piling up and left half his entrails half way into the death run. The Reaper opened him up like a zipper. Arrow traveled all the way through and stuck 2" into a log.

Sorry fellow MMers, but this is a report on my 2008 "bullet" performance.

TC encore 50 cal, 100gr. triple 7, 250 gr. Barnes Spitfire MTZ.
225 yards broadside
buck dropped in his tracks and bullet left and entrance hole 1" and exit large enough to drive a large suv through lol
Completely satisfied with bullet performance.

Knight .50 cal, 295 gr powerbelt, 110 grains 777, 106 yards. Entry hole .5", exit hole .5". Got both lungs, but did not touch one rib - punched a half inch hole clean through him. Luckily a deer will pump a lot of blood through 2 half inch holes, he ran a long way, about 300 yards. Also lucky for me he ran towards the truck......Not displeased with the load though, this was only the 2nd animal I've killed or seen killed with a ML, so I don't have a lot to compare to.

Cow Elk
.32 Remington 170 gr. Soft Point Core-Lokt
75 yds right behind shoulder 1 inch below spine, bullet was between meat and skin on opposite side.

Bullet retention was 135 grains

Howdy,

7 WSM with 140 gr. Nosler Accubond @ 3105 muzzle velocity...
438 yards lazer ranged, bedded quarter toward me.

one shot only... hit in heart, recovered against skin at off side flank. Heart shredded, buck stood, then keeled over.
Bullet retained 71% of its original weight.

I'm satisfied with bullet performance.

Elk, 300 yards by range-finder.
300 Win Mag
180 grain Sciroccos.
Elk standing broadside, hit right behind the shoulder, took out both lungs big time and complete pass through. Elk went down on impact. Exit hole was about the size of a 50 cent piece or slightly larger.

I like these Sciroccos. I have been using them for several years with great success. I like the way they work.

Spike Bull Elk.
1: 7MMRUM 150grn Scirocco
2:65yds
3:Shot entered just behind right shoulder, animal quartering away and up hill.
4: 1" entrance hole. no exit. Found bullet in off shoulder under hide. Bullet separated the hide from the animal on right shoulder for 12"diameter. Made complete mush of lungs, heart, and probably more, I did the gutless method as with all game. Also noticed a big bulge by back quarter full of blood. I believe the paunch and intestines were mush due to lack of size in the paunch area and you could hear a sound like water sloshing in the whole cavity of the elk. Bullet did no damage to muscle tissue in off shoulder. Bullet punched through the off shoulder bone and thru 2 ribs on right side at entrance. Retrieved the bullet and bullet mushroomed great and only lost about 25% or less of weight.
5: Very satisfied. Have taken 3 bulls with this setup and bullet performed as promised. All one shot one kill.

What kind of bullet does Nosler make that weighs 210 grains?

Also, don't you just hate it when you go to the effort to set up a long range gun, then the stupid animals walk right up to you?

Spike bull elk
.300 Win Magnum
40 yards broadside standing still
180 grain Nosler Partition handloads

180 grain Accubond out of my 300 weatherby mag. 82.5 grains of H4831 coming out around 3250 fps.

I have killed 8 deer in the past 3 years. (3 bucks and 5 does) with excellent results. Only one deer went more than 20 yards (perfect heart shot). Otherwise, this year I took three does shot quartering away and the results were the same....see picture below.

Picture022-1.jpg

This picture is of the entrance hole...yes, I said entrance! I think the bullet "tears" through the hide on quartering game at that velocity and angle of impact. All broadside shots with this combination have been a 1" entrance with a 2-3" exit hole. All shots were complete pass throughs. And all the quartering away shots demolished the far shoulder.

I would say that on a less than perfect shot, the accubond does cause some serious damange and hemoraging (witness to a 7 RUM Accubond frontal shot. The damage to the front shoulder, lungs, guts and hide were unreal when gutting the animal).

I should also mention that the deer I have taken so far were at the following ranges (yards): 305, 245(picture), 210, 225, 426, 446, 545 yards...

All of these deer have been taken out west on the plains. I am considering another rifle build with a little less power. I can't imagine what this would do to a deer in the north woods that I hunt at less than 75 yards...

I am very pleased with the performance of Nosler's Accubonds!

20? custom shop barrel - .30-30 caliber

130 gr TSX ? complete pass thru ? dropped on the spot ? about a 75 yd shot

6x Burris Mini w/ Butler Creeks. Weighs just under 5.5#

The shot/exit wound:

3x2-Exit.JPG

Range was about 75 yds. I spotted the doe first. She was on to me. I spotted movement of another deer. Saw it had horns. I was just looking for a buck. Threaded in a shot from above between some small spruce trees. Hit below the spine behind the left shoulder. Exited thru the right shoulder.

The didn't didn't move more than 10-15 feet from where hit, so I can't complain about bullet performance.

I've only seen the 200 gr spitzer, and the 220 semi-pointed in the Partition 30 calibers.

If these are really old bullets, that would explain why I haven't seen them. I'm only 45.

1. 300 win mag, 165gr Hornady Interbond
2. ~150yrds

Deer
7MM Rem Mag shooting 139gr. Hornaday factory heavy mag loads.
310 yds. shooting at steep incline
bullet sized entrance high on shoulder 3" exit up through spine
Dropped in tracks, very happy with load.

Antelope
7MM Rem Mag shooting same loads as above.
380-400 yds. (didn't have my rangefinder and tried to step it off)
bullet sized entrance high shoulder, no exit didn't find bullet (didn't feel like digging in stinky goat guts... sorry)
Dropped in tracks, still happy with the load.

I figured I'd go by Hornadays ballistic chart and pick a nice fast flat shooting bullet and I found one. I've played with different loads in this gun but this load feels the best and I'm finally at a point where I feel like I really know this gun. Very pleased.
