Let's hear your picks of who is, or who are the best bowhunters out there. There are numerous "high profile" names out there. Are they justified? And if so, give your reasoning. What about local guys who do well? Are they "the Man"? Are there more than one? Could two guys win top honors? Be sure to back up whose names you throw in with good facts and data on what they've done. Pictures would be best. But let's hear it. Who deserves to be crowned "THE MAN"!!!!! I might even throw in a little something for whom we, as MMrs declair, THE MAN!!!!! Let the games begin!!!!!

I know a couple of guys on here that, by their sheer production, appear to be "The Man" when it comes to bowhunting.

Silentstalker and swbuckmaster!!!

Yah I know, some will say Chuck Adams and Randy Ulmer and they are no doubt good bowhunters but they also have tons of cash to back them up. In my mind..."The Man" in a guy that can consistantly kill quality animals on a limited budget the DIY way!!!

It's always an adventure!!!

Well I guess I will start by saying that a lot of us could be "The Man" if we got payed money from endorsing products...

Dont take this the wrong way I am not jealous...It's just that if the money was not the issue and you were able to pay the cash it takes to play the draws and the leases and all you had to do is hunt hard you could easily be recongnized as one of the celebrity hunters..

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-08 AT 00:05AM (MST)[p]Okay, for the sake of not turning this into a Chuck Adams/Randy Ulmer competition, lets change it up a bit. But first, props to both Chuck and Randy. We all know what they've done and hats off to them. Hands down, remarkable accomplishments.
That being said, let's throw in names of guys who go SELF GUIDED ON PUBLIC LAND. That should level the playing field a bit. Now, lets see "who's the man"!!!! Again, back your nominess with what they've done. Factual accounts and pictures would be great! In the realm of SELF GUIDED HUNTS ON PUBIC LAND, .........who is........."THE MAN"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FMP CREW!!!! This year with big G and Anthony's help I made the switch from 13 long years of tradional shooting to sites, peep, and release. It felt completely different to me, like I had never picked up a bow in my life...I learned a ton of great techniques and those guys are the most dedicated archery hunters I have ever come across!! I definately owe my confidence in my own shooting to those guys. If the only FMP video you've seen is Proof then you seriously owe it to yourself to pick up the first couple and see how far they have come because they truely are "THE MAN"(s)!!

BOHNTR!!

I take nothing away from, in fact i admire and respect what R. Ulmer and C. Adams have accomplished...but they're pro's, enough said...and swbuckmaster, i take my hat off to, he gets it done.

But BOHNTR has impressed me long before i signed on these pages. The very hard to hunt huge Blacktails he takes on public land plus the big muleys he always manages to get, puts him over the top. In my mind, "He's da Man!"

fred is the man. crazy ass man he was!!! grizz with recurve. the man had big nugs. i found his 1977 welcome to the world of archery cattallog. wonder what its worth now? any collectors reading this? ken

I've got a couple votes, in no particular order:

1. LuckyShot (I don't know how "lucky." You get it done.)

2. BOHNTR (Roy kills big bucks. A lot of them.)

3. Randy Ulmer (I don't care that he's got money and time. He's one of "The Men" in my eyes for sure.)

Cool thread. My vote for top Hit Man in the MM Mafia is Roy ?Amazing? Grace. High country, low country and everything in between, BOHNTR has whacked more and bigger bucks than any non professional hunter I have seen. I have even contemplated changing professions to become a SWAT guy just so I could have as much time to hunt as BOHNTR does. He is ?da man? in my book. But Kiptonite Fowler has started a pretty impressive run over the past few years as has swbuckmaster.

Ted Nugent is not a hunter that man is a killer. It is pretty easy to kill an ant when your hunting over and ant pile. I watched a Ted Nugent show and he killed 4 animals out of his tree blind before he got down and cleaned up the bodies.

BOHNTR's the man

BOHNTR, obviously a fantasic hunter and heck of a nice guy.

As for the pro celebs, the one I'd like to hunt with the most is Fred Eichler. That guy could have fun at a funeral. He just seems like an average Joe who really loves bowhunting. Big critters or small critters, he gets just as excited.

No doubt Cameron, Chuck and Randy are good at what they do too.

As for as our forfathers, I've got to hand it to Fred Bear, Glen St. Charles, Art Young, Saxton Pope, and of course Ishi. They are all "the man".

I love how Cameron Hanes goes into the back country and always seem to come out with something. I like how it's not always about the size of the animal with him. He just goes in and gets it done. With that said, all the bowhunters on these pages that get into the backcountry and also get it done get tons of respect from me!!!!

My MM list is

BOHUNTR
SILENTSTALKER
CNEDEER
WILEYWAPITI

Why? Because they are not only pretty darn successful, they are humble enough to share tips and good enough to support others in their endeavors.

the pros would be Cameron Hanes, Chuck Adams and Dave Jones

My own personal WO-man is Jill....cuz she's a stone-cold killa with a bow!

I am putting in a vote for Rich LaRocco. He is an amazing hunter(& writer).

I hunted in southern Utah with him several years ago and still think about the things he taught me. I give him my vote not only because he is an excellent hunter, but because he is more than willing to share his knowledge and time with a young guy like me(I was 19 when I first met him)

AWHOLELOTTABULL and slowbow hit it perfect silentstalker swbuckmaster and bohntr are all three "THE MAN" when it comes to bowhunting.

I would have to say any one that has killed a non-typical 230+ inch buck on the wasatch front, and has been in several magazines is the man. What do you think Kip?

Top MM bowhuters IMHO in no particular order:

JDH has killed some big elk/deer on a few LE Units

Bowhunter kills multiple deer in multiple states every year

MTquivers has been on a streak lately killing all kinds of different species

Bugling Billy or BB gets it done also. I like looking at his picture stores here on MM. Keep them coming!

SilentStalker has a good streak going as well.

As for my favorite celebrity hunters that goes to Cameron Hanes because of his style of hunting Matches mine. Then Randy Ulmer, the guy just plane gets it done. He was out in the bookcliffs this year and took a 190+ buck with his bow. My buddy was also out their hunting right next to Randy and we never even saw this buck.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

There's a lot to be said for a guy who works hard, hunts public land UNGUIDED, and arrows big deer year after year and from state to state. BOHNTR gets my vote for all of these reasons. That being said, there are a lot of guys out there just like him that quietly arrow monster animals year in and year out and these are the guys that I think are pretty incredible.

I've been around a couple of the above-mentioned celeb bow hunters and the ego factor (and in one case rudeness factor) kind of ruined it for me. Not the Nuge though, he hunted one of our family ranches way back in the day and even as a kid, I thought that dude was cool but just plain loco.

While other kids had rock stars and movie stars as their heros, Fred Bear was my childhood hero. Still is. He was an amazing spokesman for archery, hunting and the outdoors. When I was about 8 or 9 years old I killed my first bowkill, a starling. I wrote Fred a letter and sent him a picture of my bowkill. He sent me a letter back, with an autographed photo of his #1 Kodiak and made me an honorary member of the Fred Bear Bowhunting Club. I still have the autographed picture to this day. He was and always will be "The Man".

Years later in this modern era of MM, my vote goes to BOHNTR. I firmly believe he is the kind of sportsman that Fred Bear would be proud of.

This is a great post so I guess I better put in my vote. I think that anyone who can consistantly kill quality animals (especially mule deer) on public land general season hunts is "the man" To me this means that there isn't necessarily one person that I can list so my vote is not for "the man" but rather for "The MEN". Most of the names listed above are definetly in that group but a few that I think really stand out to me are Scott (swbuckmaster) Kip (LuckyShot) and Roy (BOHUNTER). Year after year they get it done the right way. These guys are definetly "The Men". The are not the only "MEN" but they are definetly on the short list in my book.

As for the "high dollar" guys listed above I would say that even the richest dude in world on the best ranches available couldn't kill the Mule Deer Randy Ulmer has killed without being a pretty darn good bowhunter. I know some of these guys have alot of "priveleges" but I beleive they are also very good at what they do!

No one has impressed me more that BB...Bill Allard. If he hunted for horns...he'd be right there with ANY of them...

Now..for younger guys, up and comers (Bill's been doin it since the early 60's..and doin it good)... I honestly haven't kept track of our MM crew..sounds like some real killers though! Kudos! I do know of several guys here in Montana and a couple in Idaho that can flat out get it done...chuck, randy, cameron...have NOTHING on them, except that they probably do it more cause its there job now...

Good Luck All!

E

I grew up with Dwight, Larry, and Chuck. They all got it done before getting it done was cool.
But my hero is still Cameron. Blue collar, nose to the gridstone, outwork the other guy! Gotta love that.
All that being said, Randy Ulmer is THE MAN. If you have ever met him at a show or in the field, he is calm unassuming "nice guy" who you would be happy to hunt with. Sure he quit practicing as a vet to hunt full time, buy wouldn't you! Besides, look at his success before anybody knew his name.

Great Post Hornseeker!

Wow,

What great lists! Hard to argue any of the Hunters listed!

If I had to go with local Bowhunters, BB, Bill Allard would top my list for sure! That man gets it and teaches the rest of us every day!

Bowhunter kills huge deer all the time and is a class act too!

You would have to put Scott, SWBuckmaster in the mix too! Scott hunts his guts out and has quite a streak going on the wasatch front!

Jeremy Houston has sure killed some bomber bucks and some pisscutter bulls to boot!

There are many others who deserve mention as well. To all of you, keep it up! It is not easy killing giants with a bow, but you seem to make it look easy! Congrats to all of you!

As for the Pro's, I really like Cameron Haynes and Roy Roth! Those guy's kill a ton of animals! Have a great day!

Chad

NOT TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT BUT LUCKYSHOT, DID YOU SAY "SELF GUIDED PUBIC LAND"? SOUNDS PRETTY HAIRY, YUCK. LOL.

Maybe not as much of a trophy hunter: But G.Fred Asbell is a true bowhunter. Larry Jones, Dwight Schue (sp?), and a few others too I suppose. I don't know many of the local guys on these forums by name or accomplishments yet.

Of course Fred Bear and Howard Hill are rightfully legends. Pope and Young got it done too. Some of those guys were in a different era, and success may have been more measured in terms of quantity of game, rather than inches of antler.

I expect there are some exceptional bowhunters out there that most of us will never know about as well.

I'm gonna say Neverstophunting, He is nowhere near a high profile hunter. He hasnt bagged anything, but he has had hundreds of oppertunitys. i've been lucky to have him help me. He has taught me a lot. And he works his ass off. In my idea this is what its all about. Not just killing.

I don't think you can put Cameron Hanes in the same catagory as Randy Ulmer and Chuck Adams........He flat gets it done with or without LE tags and without tons of money. I've never been impressed with Chuck Adams, but do think Randy Ulmer is a stud. He is a hunter, and has lots of money which helps....

Roy Grace is deffinatly one of "The Men" in bowhunting. I do think Cameron Hanes is one of the best all around bowhunters! There are not too many who work harder, smarter, or have more fun! I think he would be in the top two any which way the title of "The Man" was awarded!

Roy "amazing" Grace gets my vote as well. aka Bohntr. I've had the blessing of hunt'n with him a time or two and learned a great deal! He's a class act and an all around good guy!!

jdh

I think Cameron Hanes is at the top of my list. I love how down to earth he is. Guy Eastman is A way cool guy to not to good with a bow. But talk to them and you will know why there mag is doing so good. Thay will help you out if thay can.

Nobody has mentioned SureShot yet, but he "is a pretty big deal in the hunting world".

My list:

Chuck Adams
Fred Eichler
Cameran Hanes
Randy Ulmer
Dwight Schue

Also got to give a local vote to BB. Bill has a ton of knowledge and experience with western game.

Doesn't it seem like Cameron Hanes just kills medium sized animals while these other guys are killing some real bruisers?

I'll bet if you told JDH, BOHUNTR, Ulmer, and a few of the others mentioned here to just go kill a buck, they could do it 100% of the time. It takes a real stud to kill monsters.

I like Cameron a lot, but he isn't killing big, big stuff.

Thats because Hanes hunts mostly public land, do it yourself.

BOHUNTR and JDH hunt public, unguided and they kill some real big ones.
Cameron is an animal, but it's a different game to kill average bucks and bulls than to kill big ones.
These other guys are going home with unused tags having passed up bucks like Cameron shoots.
They're all good, and I don't want this to end up being an argument about Hanes. He's obviously got my respect on all aspects of bowhunting and backcountry backpacking, but not so much on the killing big animals.

Without a doubt, the hunter who impresses me the most, year after year, with a sportsman's attitude...BOHNTR...period.

Roy Grace aka BOHNTR, JDH, SW are pretty consistent and are DIY hunter's using their own resources and hunting public land. That is impressive!

Randy Ulmer has one of the most impressive collection of mule deer heads taken with a bow. However, he don't find his own animals. I think there are dozens of hunters who could be just as consistent as Randy if they had big animals to hunt every year with unlimited resources and time. Randy still has my respect. He apparently knows how to stalk and kill.

Put Cam Hanes in an area with some trophies running around and he could hang with the best of them. Cam just needs to keep his finger of the trigger.Even with his recent celebrity status he seems to keep it real and still hunts public land. That is admirable considering a lot of these high profile guys eventually turn to guided and or private land premium hunts. As deerbedead mentioned, Cam has proven he can kill respectable animals every year, he just needs to put some monsters on the wall.

Mike

There are quite a few guys with impressive archery stats. with the slams and all, but for a guy that isn't on TV and backed by a show to kill big critters and seems to just love the game, my vote goes to BOHNTR...

Cameron Hanes, hands down. He is truly the Michael Jordan of Bowhunting.

Fred Eichler and Fred Bear are also amazing.

"Hunt hard or go home!"
