I was looking at the big buck contest leaders on the Wy Trucks website and noticed that there were very few decent bucks (only 1 really) from 102. I have not seen any other pictures posted from this unit. Anyone have any 102 buck pics to share?

I havnt seen any real big ones from this area this year, maybe cus there all getting poached....

I live in rock springs and havn't heard or seen anything big yet this year either. I dont know if its the warmer weather or bad genitics or maybe a combination of both. Its definitely not the good area it used to be.

I hunted with a guy for the first week and did not see anything very big but a few 175-180. The deer did not seem to be in their normal places and where definitely held up in the cedars and timber more than usual. One big problem is all the oil rigs they have up there. They had every small dirt road plowed into a major road and big rigs all over. We even had to compete with a helicopter that was dropping of equipment for the oil rigs. It was hovering over us in one area almost every day. They also had a survey crews that had flags all over and walking up and down every canyon around setting off charges to find natural gas pockets. Its like a small city on top of Pine Mnt

There was a full moon and very warm temps the first week. Not to mention the fact that there are 400 tag-holders for the area. My guess is these factors also contributed to the lack of big buck sitings. Since the season isn't over yet, obviously we won't get a full report.

I went with a friend on this hunt. We killed a 28" 5X5, no eyeguards. It wasnt real heavy beamed. I was totally impressed with the number of deer and bucks I seen. But I was not impressed with the quality. We must have killed a good buck, because all the locals where coming into are camp, and saying that was the best buck they had seen on the unit all year, after scouting alot and bowhunting them for a month. I changed my mind about putting in for it. I have max points, and I'll never put in for this unit. The genes reminded me of Diamond Mtn unit in Utah, alot of deer, poor quailty on there bucks.

You guys should all contact Wyo G&F and complain about this to them.We go to the meetings every year and talk about this.We need more people to complain about the unit!Non-res,res-don't matter!G&F needs to hear from people before any changes are made. They actually wanted to increase tags to 450 this year.Do you guys think that is a good idea? You can post on this website until your fingers bleed, but until you contact Wyo G&F,102(and any other unit for that matter)will not get any changes made.We filled the Green River office with people, and they did not raise tags.Sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the grease!

you don't have to hold this guy way out to see he's a bigun.

why you say that nontypical?(definetly a bow harvest)
has 102 changed that much in 4 years?(been that long for me since hunting it four times brfore)
I am maxed and thought I may draw soon!

That buck wasn's killed in 102, says so right in the caption provided......Weather conditions weren't the best during this season. My guess is we haven't heard all there is to tell from this years hunts.....In any event, when given the opportunity, voice your opinions that 400 tags is too many for this area! Not just here, but where it counts.

For everyone that has been putting in for area 101 & 102. Over the last few years the posts on this site have said those areas are getting worse or not what they used to be. And thats staight up true. Yes there are a few good bucks but, thats it every year. We all like to think that a big buck is behind every corner or under every tree. Those days are over! Atleast for the next few years. We need to put preasure on the Wy G & F during the season setting meeting next spring. Plain and simple shot out, over hunted and piss poor management!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-08 AT 09:35PM (MST)[p]I agree these areas are being way over hunted, I saw alot of bucks come out of here this year and half of them shouldnt have been shot, way to small. Theres also alot more deer living right in town now, right in my backyard actually! Could be the oil and gas stuff pushing them around, lack of rain? I dunno.

I also think poaching is a major problem around here as well, just the other day someone shot a decent buck at a local park and through it in the dumpster, didnt take the antlers or anything.

Also what hasnt been mentioned is how many more deer are killed on the highways and dirt roads with all this extra oilfield traffic, Everyone has the big Ranch Hand bumpers on there trucks and there just slaughtering the deer.

Rackmaster-that velvet buck was killed over by Laramie(area 73,I believe),and yes, archery kill.A-Rod-I agree lots of deer are getting whacked by these oil field trucks. You can see the blood spatter marks all over Hwy 191.Lots of 2 yr old bucks get killed on the last few days because "trophy" hunters have to fill their tags, instead of sticking to their guns til the very end and going home empty-handed if they don't find what they want.I don't understand what the big deal about a 20" 4x4 is to a seasoned hunter.Lots of future trophies get killed late in the season.

A lot of the biggest bucks killed in 102 the last couples years are "under the radar". They are not entered in any contests, or pictures uploaded to the internet. Hell there are not even camera phone pics of them.

I know of a 206 32 inches wide buck shot opening weekend. And then there was a 200-205 24" wide the 2nd to the last day. Both bucks I've seen in person.

What more can you expect from a limited quota area? 2 bucks (that I know of, probably more) over 200 inches sounds good to me.

I agree it would be nice if tags would be cut. But it's not going to happen.

if its that bad with the research on oil going on what are the elk and antelope doing?
maybe cut tag to 70 resi and 7 for non resi's that would push my chances out of drawing but I can wait and make it a 5 day season!
I will shoot over a request to g&f!

I hunted the area the first 2 days of the season and then the last week of the season. I saw a ton of deer, but very few big deer. I saw lots of bucks in the 20-26" range, most with really crappy genetics that were very crab-clawed both front and back. I am sure the weather and the hunting pressure had a lot to do with not seeing some of the bigger deer (assuming they were out there). The only deer I saw with decent forks and frame, I harvested - scored 166".

Hello

I'm not trying to hijack this post however, I was wondering for you deer hunter's in this area what you thought about the Mountain Lion population in area 102. If the quality of bucks are not the same as it has been in the past could it be that the lion and coyotes are taking their toll on the mature bucks (especialy the moutain lions) after the rut when they are tired and wore down.

I hunted the last week of the season in 102 with high hopes. If I had it to do all over again, I would have hunted it the same way. I am not a local to the area and had never been there before, so I am sure that I did not know the best areas to hunt the older age class of bucks. I did find an area that I really thought was going to produce for me and gave it 6 hard days. I saw fewer bucks than I did around the popular areas (Little Mtn, etc), and the quality increased SLIGHTLY. I am sure that there are a few very nice bucks out of this unit, but I think that killing a 190 plus buck would be a VERY tall order to fill. I went home empty by choice. I feel that the unit has a very high population of deer, with an age class and genetics problem. I think that the harvest numbers are needed because there are so many deer, but I think that can be achived differently. What about an early hunt (general/juniors/meat hunt)with 300 tags in late October and a trophy type of hunt for the first 10 days of November with only 100 tags? This would help show the true potential of the area because the biggest bucks should be on does in November. A lot of units here in Az are handled this way and it works. Just a thought.

Lenderdave-Please send your comments to the G&F.We go through this every year. They are not concerned about quality-only opportunity. They wanted to raise tag numbers last year, and miraculously we were able to thwart their attempt just by sheer numbers showing up to the season setting meeting.I wish more people would eat tag soup-it's really not that bad!Pretty simple concept-if you don't find THE ONE-don't kill one.Once you do it a few times,it gets pretty easy. The reasons 102 gets rated as the best unit in Wyo by Huntin' Fool is not just for quality,it is also because of large numbers of deer, access, and public land. When you combine all those factors, and throw in the possibility of killing a 180"+ buck,it's kinda hard to argue with the logic.Did you notice all the big 2 pts,2x3's and 3x4's?We definitely have a genetics problem out there.People are going to kill what they want to kill, and lots of them kill the 2 yr old future trophies on the last couple of days of the season. There's no stopping that-if that's what they want, they should be able to take that animal. But there's no denying it affects the quality out there, and I think it's largely because of such easy accessibility.I would like to see a separate youth hunt-say 20 tags for 3 pt or less on at least one antler, from Nov 1-7 for ages 12-16.Maybe target some of those inferior genetics?Good luck getting Wy G&F to agree with any changes, though.

I don't think there is a genetics problem in 102. There are too many tags to produce as many slammers as we all hope will slip through the cracks. Lower the tag numbers and we'll see the results.
