These three bucks came off the Southeastern unit in Utah. The year started off very slow during the 2008 archery and muzzleloader hunts. Dry, hot weather made it very difficult in finding bucks. This is my 13 year-old son's first year hunting and trying to keep his excitement was getting harder to do. Many long hikes and countless hours of not seeing animals was starting to take it toll on him. So when I told him we had a 2 1/2 hour hike into a canyon on the opening day of the rifle hunt, he was not the least bit thrilled. We started out at 5:00 am and reached the canyon just as the sun was coming up. We jumped 2 bucks from their bed and I got my son Dakota locked in on the bigger of the two. He made a very good shot as the buck was side hilling away from us and the buck hit the ground. A 3x4 that measured 28 inches wide and 24 inches tall is what he had to show when all was said and done. His excitement shows in the pictures and I do believe that he is hooked on hunting big bucks.

Two days later found my newphew Brock and myself back in the same canyon after the buck that was with my son's buck. We spotted 3 bucks on this day with the biggest being a 20 inch 4x4. Buck fever got the best of my nephew as he missed the buck on his first three shots, but he then connected on his forth. He hit the buck a little far back and the buck spun and headed for heavy cover. It started to snow and rain and without alot of blood to follow I decided it would be best to not push the buck and return the next morning to see if we could spot him. I returned the next morning and started glassing at first light to see if I could locate the buck. What I did locate was a very nice buck that was bedded in the oak brush about 100 yards away. I could not tell how wide the buck was, but he appeared to be a pretty heavy horned 4x4. The buck stood up and dissapeared in the heavy cover. A few minutes later he reappeared going up the other side of the canyon. A well placed shot from my Ruger 300 mag and the buck hit the dirt. I wasen't sure how good a buck he was until a reached him. He was a heavy horned 4x4 with a small kicker and his outside spread measured 28 inches. We rough taped the buck at 182 inches. And as luck would have it, as I was packing this buck out the bottom of the canyon I came across the buck my nephew had shot the day before. It looked as if the coyote's had gotten to him in his bed that night and they had ruined the two hind quarters. We took what we could and my nephew was so excited that we had been able to retrieve his buck. What had started out as a very slow year had turned into a great year of hunting. I would like to thank my two good friends and hunting buddies Ray and Danny for their help this year. I hope you enjoy the pictures and good luck to everyone next year.

The hike is always worth it when you come out with bucks like that. Congrats on a successful hunt, better then I had on southeastern this year! Coming home with only a sleeping bag and tent in the back of your truck isn't to fun.
