Southern Region RAC meeting

You should have gone if you wanted to know.

I didn't get home till 1am

Jeff

Jeff,
I would have loved to have gone. Somethings are more important right now like paying my bills. I had to work. Thanks for your
help anyway. What is your problem? Didn't you get your way?

Sorry for your having to work. It was not ment negitivly. The meeting was not very well attended and the RAC didn't listen to any of what any of us commented about. They just let us talk and then did what they wanted to do anyway without even taken into consideration what was said.

Wasn't trying to be a jack.... just tired of the RAC not listening to the people. We must need to pack the joint and all get loud before they will listen.

All be damned, that sounds like exactly every RAC meeting I've been too. Hmmmm.

Jeff, thanks for the update. I try to attend the RAC meetings and have always left frustrated. Usually enough that I can't sleep all night. When they do listen and get it right the Wildlife board, follows the money.

You can show and get loud and it still doesnt change their minds. They are back by groups to get on the RAC and there fore they are there to do what the groups want not what the public wants or what should be done biologically should be done. What gets done it what makes people $$$$.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward, whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both, for a wounded man shall say to his assailant "If I live I will kill you, If I die you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

Its tough to have much turnout when there is a snowstorm and the biggest election night ever.

Statewide archery remains as was from 2008..... Statewide spikes accepted.... 9 day hunt accepted....new bonus point system accepted...

Personally I don't care for the archery and the 9 day and the new bonus point system as far as being able to purchase points for all species WAFJ...HERE WE GO IT'S THE RICH MAN SPORT FOR SURE NOW, I hope everybody has deep pockets or you will never have a tag other than a general tag.

There was also alot of bickering as usual, but when you have 3 different hunters out there (trophy, kill anything, and social) what do you expect. We will never all agree, or please everyone, unless we are all willing to give a little--yeah right....

Yes, I have to give the UBA fellars some credit, even though I don't totally agree with all of it, they had a great showing and got their point across----You will NOT have to specify what region you are going to hunt the first 9 days NO CAP either--probabally will continue to sell out faster and faster each year--the local Beaver chapter had nobody show up except for 1 board member, and hardly any locals showed it was primarily Utah county vs Washington county.. That local Beaver sfw chapter definately needs an overhaul... someone to stand and show... they did have a paper with their suggestions, but no backing at all.

So the statewide spike only passed!!!!! This looks like the begining of the end of good units like Pahvant, Dutton, SW Desert and so on, give me a break. If anyone out in MM knows how a person could get invloved in the SFW chapter in my area please shoot me an email I live in Millard County if that helps thanks.

To clarify what MEEW stated, the RAC board referred the UBA proposals to the Wildlife Board, and then turned around recommended going with EVERYTHING the DWR proposed, which includes: pick a region for the first 18 days of archery, statewide spike hunt, management deer tags on the LE premium units.

I was disappointed by the turn out as well, if you subtracted the DWR/DNR employees, Wildlife Board members in attendance, and the RAC members it was a poor showing. UBA brought 10 people from up north to the meeting, sad to see how many apathetic hunters there are out there.

Only ONE archer stood up in favor of picking a region, every other archer (8-10) was in favor of keeping statewide. There were a few RIFLE hunters wanting to do away with statewide, I directly asked the SFW rep from the Dixie SFW Chapter why the RIFLE guys cared about statewide archery since it is been spun as an over-crowding issue. He finally admitted it is because RIFLE hunters from the south are frustrated that they can't draw a RIFLE tag while 'outsiders' can come and hunt 'their' mountain. This is the same guy who said we need to be united as hunters, WTF?

The RAC members were unwilling to address a single proposal made by the public, including a GREAT one made by the mobile impaired group asking for a few LE tags for permanently wheelchair hunters, their proposal got a round of applause from the audience and not even ONE comment from the RAC board.

If it is important to people they will show up, I did and I had to drive home in nasty conditions. I got home at 2:30 am, I would do it again. Stay home and do NOTHING and you get what you get.

PRO

Define, develop, and sustain BOTH trophy and opportunity hunts throughout the state of Utah.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-08 AT 10:32AM (MST)[p]It is interesting to hear how the So. RAC came out on the proposals. Personally, I will vote to keep archery statewide. I also, with the info. I have, will not support statewide spike hunting. If there are units that could be helped by spike hunting, then they should be looked at individually and dealt with. I am inclined at this time to support the management deer proposal. I don't think that most hunters who would draw an LE tag from one of these areas would seriously consider shooting a 3x after having probably waiting for 15 - 20 years. The problem of shooting a deer that is not a "true" 3x is a concern. I believe that seeing a point one inch long from 200 yards is very problematical. There needs to be some leeway when determining if a point is 7/8" or 1 1/4" after the fact.
I am absolutely in favor of the proposal of restricting hunting on deer management units that continue to struggle to reach objective i.e Monroe, Nebo, Lasals etc. This approach is long overdue. It is much better to focus on smaller areas that need protecting than broad brushing an entire region with restrictions.
The wildlife board generally always implements whatever the RACs vote for in that region as it applies specifically to that region.
I for one listen to hunters and put more weight on their opinions and comments in my decisions. When I talk to hunters that have had many years of experience and they tell me that elk numbers or deer numbers are way down - I believe them. I put more stock in their observations than I ever will believe the phantom numbers that come out of a highly unreliable "deer modeling system" that most big game managers rely on. There is no substitute for on the ground experience, whether or not you have been "trained" how to count deer. You guys and gals out in the field know how to count just fine. Let your RAC members know how you feel. Richard Hansen

Why are we having a managemnet hunt for deer on the LE units? Why would the DWR support it for deer and say that it doesn't work for elk? If it won't work for elk it surely will not work for deer. An elk will stand in a herd and let you look at him, gives you more time to know what you you are shooting.
I think the spike only hunt on the SW Desert has the potential to be a good thing. As long as they discontinue the cow hunts. The bull cow ratios need to be brought back in line and this should help.

Why are we always having to ask why....it just seems that nothing the dwr does makes sense....I also think that areas like the peaks and the san juan will benefit from the spike hunts...on the contrary the monroe and the boulder not so much

Pro and others,

When you say the RAC members were unwilling to listen, was it all of them across the board? Was there a single RAC member that opposed any of the proposals that were approved?
