O.K.!!!

THIS IS FOR THE PRO'S & Pro???

THIS $HIT HAS ALWAYS AMAZED ME!!!

UTAH DOES THERE COUNTS ON DEER HERDS AFTER THE APPLICATION PERIOD FOR THE FOLLOWING SEASON!!!

DON'T YA THINK IT WOULD MAKE MORE SENSE TO HAVE THE DRAW AFTER THE HERD COUNTS AND AFTER WE SEE HOW THE HERDS FAIRED THE WINTER???

AS Pro & OTHERS HAVE TOLD ME MANY TIMES:BESSY YOU'RE NOT A SCHOOL BOY BIOLOGIST!!!

NOPE,I'M NOT!!!

I SEE $HIT THAT HAPPENS IN THE WOODS FIRST HAND!!!

WOULDN'T IT MAKE MORE SENSE???

YOU CAN PLAINLY SEE WHAT TOOK COLORADO SEVERAL YEARS TO GAIN WAS HIT HARD IN JUST THE LAST YEAR,IF WE HAVE ANOTHER YEAR AS HARSH IT COULD BE DEVASTATING!!!

SURELY COLORADO DOESN'T DO IT THE SAME WAY AS UTAH,DO THEY???

ALLOWING A CERTAIN NUMBER OF PERMITS HERE IN TARDVILLE FOR FOLLOWING YEAR HUNTS BEFORE COUNTS ARE DONE & BEFORE WE KNOW HOW HARSH THE WINTER WILL BE DON'T MAKE NO SENSE TO ME???

ANSWERS & THOUGHTS PLEASE???

AND Pro,FIRE AWAY!!!

Bess, I would say all is well as evidenced by this recent mature harvest. Yes it might only be a forky but look how tall it is. I think you may know the guy on the right. The guy on the left, well, he was having a celebratory....well, nevermind about the guy on the left. Sorry slam but it was a photoshop crime of opportunity.

they count the deer during the winter because its the only time they can, I think this long drawn out cold spring is when the mortality occurred, its probably hard to know how bad it was for some time after, Im not a bio. so this is my guess

LMAO 1911!!!!

I still think the major issue in Utah is habitat VS hunter pressure.
And i'm not just talking about human hunters, predators as well, and every other thing that takes a deer, including automoblies.

Look at the Book Cliffs-
It gives out over 600 buck tags each year and i haven't even looked at how many antlerless tags in gives up.
Yet with all these factors, the Books are crawling with deer.
Habitat......it's absolutely perfect for growing and sustaining healthy deer populations through all four seasons, even with high hunter pressure, including predators.

Look up in the Northern Region....hardly any winter range at all and heavier snowpack than the Books ever see.
Now toss in all the deer tags they issue......makes me sick.

North Eastern region doesn't look all that bad as far as numbers go, it's maturity of older class bucks that's hurting there, not over all deer numbers.

Southern and SE Regions....better everything there, but then again, it all has great winter range due to less human populations and better winter climate.

Now for Colorado-
It seems they too suffer some of our same issues.
Northern areas of the state suffered huge losses as did Utah. Southern end of the state has WAY better habitat, better winter climate = lots of healthy mule deer.

And we can't blame Utah's deer decline due to our growing elk populations, Colorado has DOUBLE the elk that Utah has.

I think it all boils down to HABITAT HABITAT HABITAT.....did i mention HABITAT?? ;-)

In UT they decide what hunts they will have before the application period, but they don't set the actual permit numbers until after the spring classification is done and all the previous falls harvest data like success rates and age classes are in. For the general season deer areas, permit numbers hardly ever change much, maybe a thousand tags are taken out of a region if the buck to doe ratio is below the 15/100.

In UT, our deer tag numbers are closely tied to buck to doe ratios, not so much to the actual number of deer. After last winter UT made minimal tag cuts to the Northern region. CO made hefty tag cuts in several of the worst hit areas Craig, Eagle Co., Gunnison Basin. I know it was tough hunting in the northern parts of UT this fall. And it sounds like even with the cuts, it was still pretty tough hunting in CO too. Trophy quality should rebound more quickly in CO with the cuts to buck tags. Hopefully the herds that were impacted last winter will bounce back soon in both states.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-09-08 AT 03:31PM (MST)[p]Yet, the CO DOW still offers does tags, even in the winterkilled units.

Deer numbers are still too low, to be worried about buck/doe ratio, and trophy quality.

AND AS 4000fps SAID:::

AND THEY STILL OFFER DOE TAGS!!!

WTF???

Utah did the same exact thing in our northern region.
It went undersubscribed on the general draw, so they still sold thousands of OTC tags to the rest of the people who didn't draw in the other regions.
Keep in mind this unit was so bad off this winter that they had to do the first emergency feeding in years....too bad it was already too late.

IMO, they should have NEVER sold any OTC tags!
They should have let the draw happen, and anything else leftover should have not made it to the printing press.

This is why i'm totally in favor of a more "Micro Managed" region, based on smaller units within the regions.
