I am pretty proud of my two sons. They both harvested nice bucks opening morning of South Dakota's west river deer season after passing up smaller bucks. This was a DIY public land hunt.

My 12 year old son made a fantastic 350 yard shot in a strong cross wind and dropped his buck in its tracks before sliding/tumbling 80 yards to the bottom of the canyon. It looked more like a sheep hunt!!! In the first photo he is sitting in the spot he shot from and the deer was standing on the hillside just above and slightly to the right of him where the snowline stops. The boys shot hundreds of rounds through their 270 wsm rifles all summer so they were comfortable with these distances.

My 14 year old son stalked up on his buck and shot him in its bed at just under 100 yards. This is his third trophy this year after harvesting a 312" bull in NM and a 5x6 whitetail buck in SD.

You are two lucky boys to have a dad that takes you out like that!

Awesome, just awesome to take the kids out! Congrats to Dad for being a great one and to the boys for being accomplished shooters.

I love to see young hunters being successful. It is particularly great to see they planned, practiced, and withstood harsh conditions and came through. Many adults would not have pulled that off. Congratulations to you all.

Both Buck's are dandy's, congrats to both of you boy's and to a day that takes the time to care......

There's room for all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed taters and gravy.

You should be proud of that right there. Sounds like you had the time of your lives, and each boy took a dandy. That right there is what it is all about.

I look forward to the day when my boy gets to squeeze the trigger on a deer. Course he's only 6 months old now, but he's already addicted to the outdoor channel, so we're well on our way to being your shoes someday.

Great story, great pics.

Thanks for sharing.

some nice west river bucks,The boys sure look happy out of scholl and hunting ,well it don't get much better then that, LMAO. Looks like the timing was pretty good you got the snow for your hunt, My nephew and his wife is out there somewhere hunting right now. Hope they are doing good too.

Thanks for the great responses guys. The boys were pretty excited to see their pictures on this site. They kept checking back to see all the great responses. Mom asked me yesterday if she should just start direct depositing her paychecks into the taxidermist's bank acount!!!!

Berryblaster - no we were a long ways from where you were hunting. I saw in another post that you got stranded in Rapid City. It sounds like you were able to get out by opening morning. I think a lot of guys decided not to try getting out as we didn't see too many other hunters even though we were on public land.
