OK guy's,

I have a good friend who can draw this tag next year. What I am hoping for is some pictures or deer either killed or scouted during the archery hunt. Opinions of the hunt, type of deer you could expect to shoot with a bow, etc. Any ideas or pictures would be awesome! This guy is hard core and has the ability to hunt the entire hunt. I do not doubt his ability to kill a great buck, just hoping to see some of his "possibilities".

Is a 30" buck attainable? 180-190? Bigger? What is a realistic goal? I have not been on the Henry's since before the closure. We hear the stories of giant bucks all over. Tell us about the real hunts you have been on. PM's are welcome if you prefer! Have a great day!

" What is a realistic goal?"

First off, Good luck to your bud in getting a dream buck!

Second, i know Jack about the Henry's except that there are lots of reports of scumbags poaching the bigger bucks off that unit. It's really too bad that for such a great unit to hunt, it could even be more so if not cherry picked by a-holas poaching for greed, fame, or money . If i had that tag, that's what would concern me.

Good luck!

Uhh, not to be a smartaleck (as my mom called us), but every photo of every buck killed on the Henry Mtns was there during the archery hunt. Yeah, all those 260, 250, 240, 230, 220, 210, 200, 190, 180, the 40"ers and the 39"ers and the 30"+ were all there to be chased with a stick and string. So, there are most likely some big mature bucks down there, but that is just a guess??

If he can take a whole month off to hunt then he must be a fire fighter... haha

I think the archery hunt is harder than the rest, with the terrain and bachelor groups. But if he doesn't want chase giant deer with is bow then ask if he will put in with me so I can draw an average tag. haha (sarcasm intended) Best of luck Chad.

Thanks guy's,

Packout very funny! I know all those bucks were down there on the archery too!! I was just hoping for some experiences from the early season ya know? That type of thing. Are those stud bucks a realistic goal? He has killed several 180+ deer with a muzzy. I will have to go look up those bucks and show him.

And yes, He is a fellow fire fighter! A great job for more than 1 reason!!! Have a great night!

Here's the Henry's buck my uncle took in 2003. Official score is 193.

I couldn't imagine any better mule deer archery hunt than this unit.

Good luck!

Thanks guy's. That is a great buck! I know it is a no brainer to apply there, he was just curious what other guy's experiences were.

Thank you.

you will have to pass up 160"-180" bucks every day because they will just get in your way. You migh even have to pass up a 190 especially if you are after one of the bucks over 200+

I know a guy that spent 28 days scouting and hunting in 2008 and finaly had to settle on a 185-190 net buck on the second to last day when his monster buck he was hunting went missing.

the deer are hard to hunt with a bow unless you just want to shoot any deer. knowbuddy that draws that tag wants to shoot just any deer. Thats how it becomes a hunt instead of a shoot even with a bow.

He should tag a buck with the 82% success rate

Archery is a year round commitment!!

This weeks Gunnison, Utah Gazette had a pic of a woman that shot a very nice 211 buck on the unit this year. I assume it was shot with a rifle.

I just want to know why there are no NR tags! This is one of the archery tags I'd buy a point and license for years just to obtain. For Utah deer management in general, is a slap in the face, even despite the limited entry!

So how many points will your friend have the next draw period? Cuz unless its at least 10 there's no guarantee he will draw, there are a lot of people in the 8 and 9 point area and there are others that drop to archery with 14 or more just cuz there sick of waiting to draw rifle. Not tryin to talk him out of it, just want him to be 100 % aware of the reality of it. Best of luck to your friend!

I think he has 10 points. I know he may not draw even with 10, but at least he has a shot right? Just trying to get some realistic goals set and decide if he wants to wait longer for the muzzy tag or get the archery in the next year or 2?? He has 2-3 general season muzzy bucks in the 180 range, wants to add a velvet buck to the collection!

Thanks for the thoughts and comments guy's. I appreciate it.

Chad,
Just got back off the Henry Mts. from a buffalo hunt. All I can say is WOW!!!!!. Big bucks rutting everywhere. I have some video I will try and post of a buck. I shot the footage out the front window of the ranger as it crossed the road in front of us chasing a doe. Definately a great place to hunt.

It's always an adventure!!!
