Just wondering how the new 4th mule deer season went and if any big bucks were killed? Any information would be appreciated and thanks for your time.

My buddy and I did pretty well. Right after the snow storm cleared up on Friday morning I saw several groups of does. One group had a buck pushing them around. He was a tall, narrow 3x4 and I decided to pass. The next day I took my friend back there - he had never killed a deer before and would be happy with a medium sized buck for his first. We were able to locate the buck and he made a great shot. So, 4th season was pretty successful for us.

However, almost everyone else we talked to did not have similar luck. In fact, nobody had seen much of anything - even does. Sounds like we just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Also, we had packed in and set up a spike camp about 5 miles from the trailhead. This probably helped as the deer were not as pressured where we were.

We just returned from Area 41. We should have been hiking in 1'-2' of snow, instead we hunted in T-shirts by mid morning. We saw a lot of does and young bucks. We hunted from the top of Grand Mesa to the flats east of Whitewater. We ended up taking 2 4x4's that were 20" and 22". Burned 7 points on the tag and got a full moon and no weather to show for it. It never got dark. As soon as the sun set, the moon was up and you didn't need a flashlight in the morning to get to your hunting area. We were stopped and checked by a G&F guy and he said that it was the warmest winter he has seen in the area in the 10 years that he has been there. By the way, the G&F guy was the most pleasant and helpful of any that I have ever encountered in the field. Area 41 didn't suffer the terrible winter kill that most other areas did. The bucks didn't even start showing any sign of rut until Saturday morning. This is going to really but a hurt to the fawns next year if the breeding doesn't start soon.

4th season is way over rated IMO. Now if you had a crystal ball and could know what the weather would be like....
