LAST EDITED ON Nov-23-08 AT 10:37PM (MST)[p]Here are some photo's of a member of Monstermuleys (aka) YukonDall. Permission was given to post pics of his Impressive North Kaibab Mule Deer! Hopefully he will be able to fill you in on the hunt when he returns later this week!

I was also on the Kaibab Late hunt this past weekend helping three friends. The hunting conditions have been warm and dryer than in past years. The warm weather seems to be keeping the bigger bucks from rutting much, but still a great hunt. I was able to locate 113 deer, 96 doe and 17 bucks over 2.5 days. The biggest buck being about a 150's four point, and many other bucks slightly smaller. Hopefully some weather will move in this week and help out the hunt! Congrats again to YukonDall on a great trophy mule deer!

If someone could re-size and re-post these pics I would really appreciate it.

YukonDall's Awesome Buck!

Nice buck. Always a fan of the box and width. Congrats, thanks for posting the pics.

THANKS MIKE FOR THE PICS, JUST RAN INTO MIKE ON THE KAIBAB AS I WAS TRYING TO LOAD THE BUCK.....HE & HIS BROTHER PROVIDED THE MUSCLE FOR THIS OLD GUY. I RAN INTO A COUPLE OF GOOD GUYS ON THIS HUNT...MIKE111 & DON MARTIN.....STOPPED IN DON'S CAMP BUT MISSED HIM.....HE HUNTS REAL LATE.
THIS HUNT WAS REAL TUFF THIS YEAR, THE WEATHER HIT REAL LATE....AND THE RUT WAS WAY SLOW. AFTER GETTING GOOD ADVICE FROM DON MARTIN TO SHOOT THE FIRST 28 INCH BUCK I SAW, I MISTAKED THIS BUCK FOR 30 INCHES......YES I GOT DUPED....BUT I'M GLAD I TOOK HIM. HE PROVED TO BE THE 2ND BIGGEST BUCK OF OF THE TRIP I SAW. THE KIABAB WAS A FUN HUNT, NOT THE NUMBERS OR SIZE OF DEER THIS YEAR THAT I HAD HEARD ABOUT IN THE PAST, BUT EVERY YEAR IS DIFFERENT. MIKE......WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THOSE ELK, THANKS AGAIN....YD.

Congrats Dave!
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

BTW, were you headed to a Luau with the Hawaiian Camo?

LOL.

Great Job.
Thanks for sharing.

No apologies necesary, it's a good buck. That's one worry about what is pretty much a once in a lifetime draw for a middle age guy. You may get a bad year. That's why it is called hunting.... Wait years for your one shot, and???? Looks like the earlier hunt hit the big bucks harder than usual too this year, perhaps fewer left for the late hunters? I think most Kaibab hunters have unrealistic expectations too. Real monsters are special because they are rare, even on the best hunts.

Nice buck and thanks for the info. I was with a friend on Kaibab late hunt and he got a 31 1/2 wide 7X4 that went 202.We got it first day so we received little information on how the hunts went. It sounds like they were tough hunts. We saw no rutting activity at all.

Congratulations YD! That's a nice buck. The Kaibab can be a lot tougher than many people realize. When my son drew the late east side hunt in '06, we had dry, cold windy weather and only saw one good buck the entire 8 days we hunted. Fortunately, he made a good shot and took a wonderful buck like you've done. It is not as easy as many people think, other than about every 7 or 8 years when they get a good snow.

Nice buck YD!
I was able to hunt 9 of the 10 days in 12AW. Ended up eating my tag. I saw plenty of bucks but not one of those famed big ole boys. Lots of big 3 pointers and they are breeding Does like crazy.
Let the tag waiting game begin................

I may have one tomorrow and if so I will post it tomorrow or Wednesday under this heading.

WELL, DAVE......(NOTE THE CAPS).....I LOOKED AT THIS BUCK AGAIN, NOPE, SORRY, I'M STILL JEALOUS!

SEE YOU NEXT WEEKEND.

THANKS GENTLEMEN.....HEY, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK AZ402 (STAN) FOR OFFERING TO HELP ME ON THIS HUNT & GATOR FOR OFFERING TO LEND A HORSE & A TRAILER TO ME. I HAD A NASTY LEG INJURY IN WHICH I DID SORTA RECOVER FROM, ENDED UP USING A QUAD WHEN I WAS NOT HIKEING AROUND REAL SLOW.....I REALLY DID APPRECIATE THEIR OFFER & HELP....THOSE ARE RARE PEOPLE. WISHING EVERYONE A GREAT CHRISTMAS & HOPE YOU DRAW THE TAGS YOU WANT......YD.

YD, congrats on real nice buck! By all accounts it seems the late hunt up there was a little tougher than usual. You did very well.

Hope to see you out for an AZ elk hunt in the near future......

That a good deer See the old guys are still getting it done.YD just remember that when I draw that tag you can come and help this old guy get his big Muledeer, Your right about Don he is a classy guy, I hope I have some money when I draw so I can hire him as my guide. Your Welcome buddy anytime you need a helping hand.

Congrats YD, I was on the 'bab' also, 12A-West late and I harvested mine opening day just before sunset. My buck is a 5 year old that was only 25" wide but he was too pretty to pass up. I saw the deep forks and the coloration of the rack and just had to touch inside the trigger guard. He is 25 wide X 24 tall and 24 deep and carried his mass throughout the rack very nicely. He had 5" bases but was 4" around almost everywhere else. I have never been on the Plateau before so I cannot speak for a harder hunt than other years but I can honestly say there were a ton of hunters where I was hunting. I was scouting the whole week prior to the opener and this is the only buck I saw that I felt would come close to my goal of 180-200" and with all the other hunters I think I made a good choice.
Congrats again
BB
P.S. I am going to have a mount done to see how long I can keep the smile I still wear.

BRUIN....CONGRATS...VERY NICE BUCK. I WAS IN THE SOWATS AREA & KILLED HIM THE SECOND EVENING OUT. THERE WERE NOT THAT MANY HUNTERS WHERE I WAS AT, BUT QUITE ALOT OF HUNTER HELPERS. I THOUGHT I MIGHT HAVE PULLED THE TRIGGER TOO EARLY, BUT IT PROVED TO BE THE 2ND BEST BUCK I SAW ON THE TRIP. I GLASSED A FEW MORE BUCKS THE NEXT WEEK AS MY PARTNER HUNTED BUT SAW NOTHING BIGGER, THE RUT & WEATHER JUST HAPPENED TOO LATE. THEY SAID 2007 WAS THE YEAR TO BE ON THE KIABAB.....OH WELL. GLAD YOU HAD FUN....YD.

Great bucks guys! I too had the same hunt(12AW Late) and got lucky with a great buck. The story's from our hunt have all been similar with tough conditions and lack of older age class bucks found. I shot early as well (2nd day) and was glad I did. Congrats to you guys on great bucks! JIM>

As a nonresident with max points I am very concerned how to use this once-in-a-liftime opportunity. I arrived 3 1/2 days before the 12A west late hunt to scout and then hunt with one of my partners who finally drew this tag. The biologist(Todd Buck) said we would see 300 deer/day and was very helpful adding to our research on areas to hunt. We only saw one 140 class 4pt scouting and then 4 160-170 class bucks the first three days of the hunt. The only other good buck seen after that was on Friday which he shot at and missed(maybe a 170-180buck). I went in good shape and ended up loosing 6lbs with all the hiking we did, so lack of effort wasn't the reason, although poor use of our energy might be blamed. Now I have invested two weeks in 12A west and left feeling disillusioned over all I had heard. Really appreciate some input on those of you who have experience in the strip and Kiabab advising me on how to proceed with these precious points.

Hey CWeeks, a lot of folks have the same story as you from that hunt. I spent an entire week there prior to the hunt working trail cams and glassing and I had a very hard time finding any older age class bucks. My conclusion is that with the early snowfall we had during the early rifle hunt, there were big bucks scattered in all elevations of the unit at the start of the late hunt. Usually you have larger concentrations in a certain elevation, but that wasn't the case this year on the late hunt. I killed my buck in the mid-level transition area but spent a lot of time scouting the highest elevations and the lowest....bucks in both places! I would still apply for that hunt if I were you, just plan on scouting well ahead of opening day to give you enough time to find the older age class bucks and the concentrations of deer. Also, the hunt was earlier this year than before...that didn't help much either!

CW......I REALLY THINK THE ONLY HOPE IS TO HAVE WEATHER & HOPE IT PUSHES ALOT OF BIG GUYS DOWN/ THEY START TO RUT AT THAT TIME. I HEARD THE SAME STORIES OF ALOT OF DEER.....WAS NOT THE CASE. I DO THINK THE HUNT REPUTATION IS WAY OVER RATED COMPARED TO OTHER STATES I HAVE HUNTED TROPHY DEER IN, HOWEVER IT WAS A FUN HUNT......BUT NOT WORTH THE $$$ OR 12 YEAR WAIT............YD.

Is a successful hunt on the strip as weather and rut dependent as the Kiabab seems to be? I know the numbers of deer aren't there in comparison, but I hate having to depend on something I have no controll over.

I DONT BELIEVE THE STRIP IS AS DEPENDANT ON WEATHER AS THE KIABAB, BUT A LITTLE WEATHER WOULD NOT HURT CONDITIONS AT ALL. I THINK A GUY HAS TO GO WITH THE MIND SET OF HUNTING THE WHOLE SEASON & GOING FOR BROKE FOR A MONSTER KNOWING IT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN UNLESS LUCK STRIKES YOU REAL HARD......YD.
