LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-08 AT 10:52AM (MST)[p]I took this guy on the last day of the Alberta Rifle season in the southeastern corner of the province. I had spotted him on several different occasions, fired and arrow at him in archery, but things never did work out. Sure am glad we crossed paths again.
What do you figure he scores? Is he a wall hanger? I know what I think but it would be interesting to hear others thoughts.

Enjoy!

Great buck. Great character and looks to be a old buck. If you feel he hits your standards take him to the taxidermist.

THAT'S A GREAT BUCK. IF HE IS YOUR BIGGEST I WOULD SAY MOUNT HIM. WHY WITH THE HISTORY YOU HAVE WITH HIM, THAT WOULD BE COOL. THAT LAST PICTURE IS AWESOME BY THE WAY!!!!!!

The story in its entirety

Buglemn, This buck isn't my best. But I think he would comliment the non-typical I have mounted. Here is a pic of the one I have mounted :

Now as for the story:

Its truly a story of redemtion so I will have to share it with you:
It was early October, I had a few days off so I grabbed my bow and went for a drive in hopes of finding a decent muley to stalk. I checked all my favorite spots & shot a few partridge along the way. But by the end of the first day I hadn't found a buck worth pursuing. Second day....more of the same. Shortly after dark I stopped at one of the local farmers for a few minutes of B.S'n and possibly a cold one. He then told me he had seen a 5x5 muley that was wider then his ears earlier in the week while finishing harvest. The next morning (with a pounding head) I headed out to the general area he had talked about and began glassing. Sure enough I found the buck he was talking about, along with a couple dinks. I watched them all bed down along a slough edge and made my stalk.
The first stalk I was about 70yrds away before being busted by one of the lil ones. They all bound off into the coulee. But the big one and one other seperated from the rest of the group. I gave them about an hour and then persued on foot. I found them bedded in a draw and belly crawled into bow range (44yrds) Stood up to let an arrow fly. When I released my string it got "caught up" in my bino's and I missed (by a mile)
I never seen that buck again......That is untill Tuesday. I was travelling the same area when I watched the same buck courting a doe. I had him at 70yrds for a long time, man I wish I could hunt Tuesdays! Wednesday.....nothing.......Thursday......the same. Friday......there seems to be a pattern forming here. Saturday, had my doubts about checking this area but decided to give it one last go. Nothing.....getting to be 4:20 and my pulse was starting to quicken. Looked at my county map, realized that the coulee I was hunting joined another that headed into Many Islands Grazing lease. I headed there quickly, somebody was there already! They headed east I decided west......and there he was 400yrds (ish) on the top of the coulee. I only seen him for a second as he went over the edge. I grabbed my bino's, rifle and took off running. (This is a little off topic but boy I think I need to start going to the gym.) I crested the hill and there he was with a dozen does and one other decent 4X4. Got set......BOOOOM! And folded him like a cheap tent! The best part was I was able to wave at a couple locals looking to tag a doe. They set up on the fenceline and everything else ran right at em. BOOM....doe down, and I got help dragging my buck out.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-08 AT 02:28PM (MST)[p]TD - he's a great buck! He would go on my wall for sure! I would say he scores 165ish - maybe more - to me the experience would be worth the trophy - regardless of the score!

BTW - sweet rifle! Love the Tikka T3 Hunter - beautiful piece of walnut - love the rich dark color. What cal?

Tikka T3 hunter 30.06

30.06 I love the rifle too.I just purchased her this fall. I had a pile of OT at work and decided to treat myself. Tikka makes a hell of a product, I am impressed. Now that I have it I wonder why it took me so long to get it! I am also glad I decided to go with a stainless on walnut vs stainless on synthetic. I love the look, she sure stands out in the gun safe. I tell ya going from the rem 710 to the tikka t3 is like going from the ugly duckling to the home comming queen.

RE: Tikka T3 hunter 30.06

Nice buck and a good story. I agree, about 165 is what I'd say he scores. I sure like that country you hunt. I bow hunted north of Bow Island in 2006 and had a good time. Congrats.

RE: Tikka T3 hunter 30.06

Mount that buck!

thats one of the cooler bucks I have seen all year on here! Tons of character.

Great Looking Buck & Rifle -

I love the stainless on walnut. I've called 5-6 gunshops and nobody can even find any information on the Tikka Hunter Stainless. Do you mind me asking where you purchased your rifle at? If you have a phone number I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Great looking Buck he will look good on the wall next to your NT.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Definitely needs to go on the wall. Trophies like that will bring back memories when you're too old to chase 'em anymore. It's all about remembering a special hunt versus size, looks, etc.

That buck is definitely a wall hanger with all that unique character it has. Put him up next too your other great buck. Like most people have said ever time you look at him the memories will come back of that hunt, and that is what hunting is all about (THE GREAT MEMORIES). Congrats on a great buck & story. Hopefully one day I will be able to go up there and see those famous monsters that roam that country you call home.
