Montana Decoys

I watched a guy on an antelope video I have stalk 200 yards across a cut grain field with a Montana Decoy in front of him. He stalked to within 50 yds and smoked the goat with his bow.

Anyone ever tried sneaking on mule deer or coues or elk with a decoy like this? I understand that wind is the most critical part but I wonder if a big herd bull would let you wander into his harem with a Montana Decoy cow in front of you?

Thanks in advance.

For some reason antelope are really curious. I have had them come running even without a decoy. Elk and mule deer on the other hand are a lot more catiuos. I'm pretty sure that sneaking behind a decoy on an elk will only bust them. I have never tried it before but I can't imagine getting to within bow range doing that.

It's always an adventure!!!

I've walked up on antelope with the antelope decoy and also with a cow (moo moo) decoy. I haven't tried it on deer yet, but I aim to.
About 30 years ago some "artist" placed lifesized cutouts of cows along a section of I-80 near Colfax CA and painted them in the black/white pattern but used bright colors ( purple, red, green, blue etc ) Every day that I went to school in the morning, deer were gathered around them and seemed mezmerized by them. When I'd come home from school, the deer were still there. That went on for about a week.

The Montana Decoy Cow (moo) has a flap in the belly where you can open and shoot through it. I know it would work on antelope.

Addict,

I would buy as many as you can get your hands on - more the better. Mortgage your house! When I hunt geese we put out 20-30 dozen of the magnum decoys - no cheap ones. I would look for a couple dozen of the super-duper magnum elk decoys...ones you can put a truck in. Then you can drive all over northern AZ bugling to your heart's content. I think that would be your best bet for that 500" archery bull you've been chasing.

In 2006, my Mom-in-law drew a LE Elk tag. I wasn't able to go down the previous days to opening day. I arrived in camp the afternoon before the opener. As I approached camp through the quakes I spotted 2 Cow Elk, or what I thought to be Cow Elk. I stopped my truck, grabbed my video Camera, and crept back down the road. I began cow calling and moving towards the cows. I heard a bugle, and started filming.. after a few minutes, I noticed these cows hadn't moved.. then out of the brush laughing came my Dad-in-law and Brother-in-law.. Trick was on me!

We did end up using these beauties.. I gotta say. "Mable" did the job nicely on Mom's 7x6 351" Bull, we set up on a side hill and began calling, the ol boy thought he'd found himself a girlfriend and came running. We got it all on film, Mom made a great shot with a smokepole to bring the big boy down.. end of story.

My opinion, they're great decoys for Elk, and naive son-in-laws.
