Ok Gentleman. I need your expertise. I have 6 deer points and had all intentions of putting in for the book cliffs muzzy tag. I know it may take a couple more years to draw, but I have a chance. I also think it would be more than fun to go to the Henry's and experience seeing the monster bucks on that unit
Would 6 points put me in the running for a management tag?? I am sure there are some whopper management bucks on the Henry's and I know there are plenty of bucks on the Books'. If you were in my shoes, which box would you check??

I would definitely put in for the Henry's. If you don't draw, check the odds to see if it will be worth putting in for again. If the odds are terrible, switch back to the Bookcliffs. My guess is the odds will be terrible.

I believe most guys with 10+ points won't bother putting in for the mngmnt tag, so your odds might be decent in drawing. In my opinion it is a good gamble to put in for a hunt the first year it is open.

It will certainly suck to look at so many huge bucks down there knowing you have to sift through them looking for a mngmnt buck!! But, there are some big mngmnt deer there.

I was thinking the same thing! It will only be worth it if you find a 3 by 13 to even consider a Management tag. Unless you want to experience some nice bucks, in that case you still can just go for a ride in that particular unit. The Book Cliffs still have some nice Big Bucks left. Its a big area, maybe most hunters only hunt the popular spots. I have seen first hand that there are Monsters over the 30 inch mark. So you have 6 pts to burn.

I would still consider the Books.

If you want just the experience put in for whatever you decide, but get this. Most hunters that draw the Books and other limited entry tags just ROAD HUNT and expect to see MONSTERS. If they were real hunters then we would have a better perspective of the areas that they are Hunting. But that is not for me to judge.

Don't forget they count EYE guards that measure over an inch. Just get familiar with the 09' Proc.

Most recent posts claim other wise!!!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-31-08 AT 07:30AM (MST)[p]Eye Guards DO NOT COUNT for a Management Buck. Here is the info taken directly from the Proclamation:

A ?management buck? is a buck deer with 3 points or fewer on at least one antler, above the first fork but not including the eye guard. THE EYE GUARD DOES NOT COUNT AS A POINT. A point is a projection that's longer than one inch, measured from its base to its tip, including damaged or broken antlers.

Those that say the eye guard counts as a point have not read the proclamation closely.

I should add that reading this makes it sound that if the Deer has a Drop Tine that starts before the first fork in the antlers it would still be a Mgt Buck.

Jared, here's what I would do if I were in your situation. Put in for the Book Cliffs and when you draw in the next couple of years go out and shoot the biggest buck you can find on the unit. You can go down to the Henry's and experience seeing some of the monster bucks there anytime you want. You don't need a tag to do that. I think I'd have more fun at the Henry's just checking out the BIG bucks without a tag anyway. Then I wouldn't have to stand there, gun in hand and tag in pocket watching a MONSTER buck walk away and not being able to shoot the sucker! OUCH!!!

Good luck,

Its a tough decision. I wish there was a way to know how many management tags they are going to give out. Personally, I am not one that has to shoot the biggest buck on the mountain, but I know it would be tough to sit there and watch a Henry's monster walk away, especially with a rifle in hand, but just to see those big boys would be reward enough for me.

I think it's going to take a lot more points than most guys think to draw a "bonus" tag.

I've heard that there's going to be around 30 tags. Afer you take out the tags for nonresidents, conservation tags (if there are any ?), the 30% for youth, and the 30% for seniors, there's only going to be a couple left to fight over with points.

I bet the bonus tags go to atleast 10+ point holders.

Just look at the elk management odds from past years. Some of the management tags were harder to draw than regular tags on the same unit.
