No Monsters but it was fun to get out and see some deer.

And to all you guys putting in for a books tag this year that have never been out there before, this is the norm, you will not go out and see 170+ deer all over the place, in fact a 160" deer is above average.

Thanks Jake for steering me to your pics....I need all the help I can get, I do understand that it's going to be tough to get a really big deer, but I hate to waste my points on a "settle for it' buck. Thanks again man!

Cool pictures.Your (MONSTER) spike is a trophy on the Fishlake Unit.LOL.(ROD)

Nice Jake. I have to agree with your suggestion on a books management hunt.

LOL, if you think it will help bess go ahead (something tells me it wont help him understand).

So true about it not being the same, out of 50-60 bucks the other day, we only saw 6 4x4 bucks. I think they give out to many tags, and prism just said in another post that they plan on giveing out alot more this year.

firemedic56, If you do decide to put in for the books and draw out PM me and I will help you out if I can.

Nice pics.

I agree that the Book Cliffs is a prime example of a unit that most hunters would rather shoot a 130-160" young 4 point and let mature "management" bucks walk. Most of the 4x4s don't get a chance to get any age on them. And over time more and more "management" bucks will be doing most of the breeding.

WHAT OTHER UNITS CAN YOU DRAW WITH 8 PTS? WITH THE SAME POTENTIAL. THE PAUNS AND HENRYS ARE WELL OFF THAT PACE. SO DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THIS UNIT. JUST REMEMBER THIS WAS ALL IN ONE DAY. 9 HARD DAYS OF HUNTING IN THIS UNIT SHOULD PRODUCE A DECENT BUCK FOR 8 PTS, IF NOT KEEP DREAMING OF THE HENRIES AND PAUNS WHICH IS CLOSE TO DOUBLE THAT TO DRAW.

i have work in the book cliffs the last 3 years in oil gas feild from colorado line to green river and on tribe land this is norm if you see 4 point once a week feel lucky & nothing wider than ears .why is this a draw unit

I think that Prism nailed it. At the end of their hunt when they haven't found a monster, lots of hunters would rather shoot a young 4 point than an old management buck. There are lots and lots of bucks out there, but there just don't seem to be many "big bucks". I know several people that have shot 5.5 year old deer out there that only scored 140. Age isn't the best predictor of B&C score.

I also think that the 3 point or better years were really hard on that deer herd. Lots of sportsmen like the point restrictions, but I think they wreak havoc on genetics and age classes. If there are any yearlings that are 3 points they get shot, while the yearling spikes and 2 points are left alone. And, for a wile out there, those were the only bucks that made it through the hunts. I think that multiple years of 3 point or better can have a big negative impact on antler genetics, especially when the pressure is as intense as it was on the Book Cliffs before they closed it. The buck to doe ratio was in the low single digits, that is how hard those deer were being hunted. Only the smallest of the youngest, and the inferior mature bucks were left to do the breeding.

I also think the timing of the rifle hunt out there makes bigger bucks more vulnerable. Those deer migrate off their summer range and are on pretty much on the winter range when the rifle hunt starts. They are easy to get to, way accessible with roads everywhere, and to top it off they start checking does earlier than bucks in other areas in the state. I think that an earlier rifle hunt would help (can't do that now due to the statewide spike elk hunt).

More archery and muzz hunts vs. increasing rifle tags could help big bucks survive. The success rates are high for all weapon types, but I think the big bucks are harder for people to stumble into on the archery and muzz hunts vs. the rifle hunt. I would say that trophy potential is highest for the hard core hunter on the early primitive weapon hunts, and highest for the casual hunter on the rifle hunt.

I also like the idea of a management hunt out there. The buck to doe ratio is high, probably in 40's, and so the DWR has to increase permits to follow the management plan that calls for 25-35 bucks per 100 does.

It is a fun hunt, and there is potential to shoot a nice buck, but if you go expecting to see 30" bucks or multiple bucks that score 180+ you will most likely be disappointed. I am sure that somebody's cousins friends roommate has video of "6 different 40 inchers running together from last winter", but my opinion is that truly big bucks are really hard to find out there.

Just my personal take and opinion on things as a deer hunter who gets to spend some time out there for work.

I couldnt agree with you more Dax, I think they should make half the rifle tags (or more) into managment buck tags, at least for a few years, right now a young 4 point dont stand a chance.

I spend alot of time out there every year for the past 8 and have not seen a huge number of big bucks out there, and the quality seems to be getting worse, not as many desent bucks as there used to be. There are alot of bucks but none of them have any age on them.

Jake, I'm surprised that Bessy didn't rip you for posting pics of the Nomad!!

Hey, did you note any bunny wabbits during your excursion? Now that snow's on the ground, I'm thinkin' a Basin Bunny Expedition is in order....

Hey Predator, to be honest, I have not noticed alot of rabbits anywhere I've been in the basin, I think last year was a rough one for the wabbits. It might be that I'm just not looking for them but I dont even see em on the roads at night and dont even see to many road killed ones. I think the population is down quite a bit from a few years ago.

Ya jake ive noticed the same thing with the rabbits. Nothing at all! Ive realized this while out yote hunting. I wasnt seeing any/or very few rabbit tracks, and with less rabbits that means less coyotes which i also noticed. No coyote tracks either where theres usually ton. But i also have a question? I heard that its something to do with there cycle that they like drop in pop ever four years and then have a spike in pop in the next four...or something like that.lol
