LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-09 AT 02:04PM (MST)[p]if you had 8 deer points and could hunt 30 days before or after the rifle hunt in Utah, which tag would you be putting in for?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-09 AT 02:24PM (MST)[p]I assume you are disabled? I guess it depends on your expectations and if you want to draw a permit in your lifetime. How 'bout Vernon?

yep, c-7 quadrapalegic. have been putting in for the book cliffs but have heard its been down lately and i could do better with this type of hunt. i've shot some good bucks so im looking for that once in a lifetime monster. never been to vernon, how tough of terrain is it?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-09 AT 02:43PM (MST)[p]Given the draw odds from last year, with 8 points you will have a better shot at drawing the Books than Vernon - if your goal is to hunt this year.

If you can wait to take that once-in-a-lifetime monster, I wouldn't put in for either the Books or Vernon, I would put in for the Paunsagaunt. You could put in for the Henry Mountains hunt, but its gonna take YEARS to draw (unless you pull one by chance).

GOOD LUCK, regardless!

Book Cliffs is really accessible and you would be able to look over lots of deer from a vehicle. That being said, I just don't know if the top end is up to the "once in a lifetime monster" level. Good luck with whatever you choose.

im not in a big hurry to hunt but im not holding out for the henry's either. id like to draw in the next 3 years or so.

I assume you want to hunt with a rifle.

Given last years odds, with 8 points this year you will draw the Books in the next three years. Your in the max pool this year, with a lot of others.

Vernon - you should draw within the next six years (again assuming the applications remain about the same).

Pauns - you should be guaranteed to draw in ten years or less.

Henry - you might be 110 before you draw.

You can always just pull a tag in the "luck" draw.

Id hunt the books in the next three years and use the 30 days you will have to your advantage to kill a monster out there. The bright side is you get to hunt sooner, and you might just pull another tag down the road.

I know a of a guy that is paralized and hunted the book cliffs 30 days after 5 times in the last 6 or 7 years, and killed 4 200+ bucks, I think the the other one was only in the 180's. All shot right from the vehicle. With that point range and the accessability of the books I would say that is your best bet. If you put in enough time and pass up the good bucks I think you have a really good chance at a 200 incher. In my opinion a 200 incher is a once in a lifetime buck for most.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-06-09 AT 04:39PM (MST)[p]I believe Shawn Labrum has guided a guy who is disabled the last bunch of years out in the Books and have taken some nice bucks..but I think he buys some kind of landowners permits to hunt every year.

Can't beat the access in the Books and hunting 30 days prior while the big ones are still up high would be helpful

Screw hunting prior to the hunt out in the books, you will want to hunt after the hunt, Think about it you will be hunting right in the prime of the rut. There isnt to many 200" deer out there but there are some monsters, and 200"s do exsist. If you do decide to hunt the books and draw I would be glad to help you out, and at least point you in the right direction. Also you wouldnt want to be hunting up high out there in a wheelchair there is some pretty steep country out there, but down low has roads everywhere and lottttsss of bucks to veiw from the truck in Nov. Good Luck with what ever you choose.

PM me if you want some help out there.

If your looking for a great buck yes the henrys is your best bet but yes the wait is long your next bet for a good chance at a big one would probably be the paunsagunt or san juan elk ridge is starting to produce if your looking for a little bit better drawing odd but still want a good buck let me know and I could give you some suggestions and be more than happy to help you out with your hunt also!! Good luck!!

8 points I think you would have a decent chance at san juan that place would be great after the regular rifle hunt I know some great spots there BIG DEER!!

It's very simple, You put in for the Henry's to add your points as the points don't matter on the unit you put in for. That way have a chance granted a slim one to pull a Henry's tag. Then in 2 years if you didn't get lucky you put in and draw the books.

Books or Elk Ridge would be my bets for a close to the road late season hunt for big bucks.

Books is a great place with a lot of bucks and good access, in my oppinion though san jaun would be a much better chance at getting a real trophy the deer there move down low early and start rutting the big boys are right there with em lots of big bucks not just good bucks like the books has, there are some trophys there too but just not as many just my opinion!! good luck
