Bonus Points Question Utah!!

How do alternates get chosen? If single apps. have more pts? I also have heard of groups drawing out with less pts as alternates then some single apps. with more pts. So one other question is does everyones in the group get his or her own draw number which increases the group odds or do they only get one draw number for the entire group?

So is this like the BCS? Do we need to investigate the process? LOL

Alternates are chosen through a secondary drawing that occurs after the initial drawing has been completed. Since this second drawing is just creating an alternate list, the 50% tag split does not apply. It actually works just like the "non-bonus tag" part of the initial drawing where everyone at all point levels has a shot at being drawn.

If you apply as a group and are selected in the alternate drawing, each of you will be placed on the list. As tags are surrendered, the DWR just goes down the list making calls. If a single permit is surrendered, the first individual in your group will be offered the permit. If they decline, the second will be contacted and so on.

I had a friend apply with his son for a Paunsaugunt archery deer permit a few years ago and they had very few points. He was contacted about a month before the hunt began and was offered a surrendered permit. The DWR knew that he had applied with his son, but they only had one permit available. He and his son decided that he should accept it. Then about two weeks later, his son was contacted and offered another surrendered permit so they still got to hunt together. I don't know how common this is, but it did work out for them.

I hope that his helps,

Jon
