Mule Deer Prefrence Points?

I live in Idaho and love hunting big mule deer. I want to start gathering points in other states so hopefully in the future i can land a great tag. What states out west can you purchase just the point each year. And how much do they run? I have a couple points in Wyoming. but i am looking at Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. Do they offer that same purchase just the point as Wyoming?

You'll have to purchase a hunting licence to acquire points in utah and arizona but you can buy just points. The points are pretty cheap but the licence isn't.

Utah and arizona use a modified bonus point system for LE and colorado uses preference points.

Hope that helps

You'll have to apply for the tag in Colorado even if you just want a PP, you'll get a refund check in mid summer. You can select PP only or apply in a unit that you know you won't draw. If you're interested in Kansas whitetails, you can apply just for the PP in May, i believe it's approx $20.

Wyoming and Colorado are very similar. From what I have looked into you pay the money upfront, put in for a hunt and point and if you don't draw you recieve a refund check like NSH said. If you are wanting to putnin for Utah I hope you are young ready for a long wait. Look at the draw odds on this web site. I think that Wyoming and Colorado in my opinion have the best system.

Preference points are very discouraging for youngsters or newbies.
I want my kid to start building points but Jeebsus Christ!, How many points are the top points guys sitting on?
16?....17?...
What's the number gonna be ten years from now?
I wish they would just call them years instead of "points" it would be more realistic.
I like bonus points or random draws as it gives hope for our young hunters.
Nevada does a good job with it's "points squared" system, but the pure points system is just killing the future for the youth hunters that have no shot at the best units.

Thats why Idaho should never go to a points system.
everyone has the same chance at drawing. Its called the luck of the draw, Not I will be able to hunt that unit in 20 years isn't that a great system. Oh and when you do draw it will be right after the worst winter kill in 20 years.

NO POINTS SYSTEM IN IDAHO!!!!!

I believe the point system is a good idea. The lucky ones could end up drawing a difficult tag more than once & others could wait a lifetime & never draw. If someone's willing to fork over the PP fee's year after year especially for several years, they should be able to draw the tag. The flip side is states that charge high prices for their PP's will tend to weed out those who can't afford the PP fees. Hunters need to calculate what the long term cost will actually be to draw a limited tag & decide if it's worth the time & expense.

I agree with HH. I think that nevada has the best system. Squaring the bonus points give those who have paid their dues a much better chance at drawing but doesn't exclude people who are just starting out.

Are there some good units that take 5-6 points to draw in the North West region?
