Back in Nov I posted a request to help recover an archery buck my friend arrowed on the Wasatch Front Extended. Thanks to fellow MM "U0143779" and the DWR the deer and antlers were recovered.

Its kind of a cool story. My friend arrowed the deer and searched for it 3 days. In the mean time I posted on this forum looking for a little help. As luck would have it one of u0143779's friends was trail running and found the deer. He called the DWR who recovered the rack. u0143779 contacted me via a PM and my friend was able to get in touch with the DWR.

On Christmas eve my friend met the conservation officer to recover the deer and put his tag on it. He felt terribly about loosing the meat and not being able rapidly recover the animal, however, I do give him credit for exhausting every possible resource to get his deer back.

Here is a photo of the rack.

Small world! Only on the Front will a deer get lost, found, recovered by unrelated parties. Congrats--great deer and you're very fortunate!

Congrats on recovering the rack. Nice buck. Thanks for letting us know it worked out with this sites help!!!

thank god he got the rack back, forget the meat. The rack is all that matters.

the meat is the most important thing. The antlers are just bonus.

I'm confused. I thought width was everything.

Great success story! Good buck too! And I know it is disappointing to lose the meat but just count it up as helping the local scavenger population thrive in another harsh winter!

Just focus on the meat being lost in an accident. Go crawl in a hole and die you are as worthless as BHWAR. calling everyone out trying to stir up a fight in every forum you post i hope you get banned soon because your about as useful as a hustler for elton john.

BTW congrats too the dude thats a real sportsman right there i don't know anyone that would have gone to the lengths that he did to recover an animal he took. Way to be and congrats again on a success story

Berrysblaster, thanks for putting that one in perspective. I knew what I was risking when I made this post but I figured the majority of the people would take it for what it was. We did not recover the deer as quickly as we hoped. We feel badly about the loss of the meat and cape. However, we did go to what I would consider more than normal effort to recover the animal. In the end we were appreciative that we were able to get some help from a member of this community and the DWR.

Good ending! Thanks for telling us what happened.

I am also glad it was not another hunter that took off with the rack. Id like to think another hunter would have turned it over to the CO, just like the runner.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-09 AT 06:54PM (MST)[p]After all the effort the hunter went through to find this buck I am glad to see him get the rack! Congrats It looks like an old buck and you have to love the smile on the kids face.

at least a lot of effort was made to recover the deer. he could have said screw it, kill another critter and tag it, but he didnt. props to your buddy. it is hunting. sometimes this kind of thing happens.

rez, you truly sound like an ignorant sob. the guy made an effort. at least give him credit for that.

I'm surprised the DWR allowed him to tag the antlers and keep them. I thought the law in Utah was that once the season ends, antlers attached to a head are no longer the property of the hunter??? I remember in Mossback Muleys 2 (I think) a guy arrowed a 272" deer that "was not recovered until after the season, so the antlers therefore belong to the state". Right from the mouth of Doyle Moss... Is it simply a judgment call on the part of the DWR officer? So what is the law???

Anyway, I'd feel very fortunate that the antlers were recovered...!!! Congrats!!!

I have to agree with most everyone else, congrats on at least locating the rack. You did what you could and that is all you can do. You now know the deer is not still suffering, and as a father myself, if I could have my little man hold a rack like that and smile like the picture above, but still teach good ethics, that is what is most important, some day our kids or grandkids might not have that opportunity. My ethical congrats go to an ethical hunter!!!!

That is a lot of hunting. Out of curiousity - how far had he gone? Did your friend 'almost' find him?
