i have 10 points which would be better. also need some maps where is best place to get good maps? i have some maps. have horses if needed. muzzle or rifle season?thanks for any ideas.

The answer depends on when you want to draw in the next 5 years. :) You're 3-5 years from drawing a Henries tag. You're within a couple years of drawing Pauns. Going muzzleloader will save you a year or two.

I assume NR (given name?)?

A NR waiting for a Henry Mountains rifle tag with 10 points is more like 50+ years out, depending on how the draw goes each year with the one non-guaranteed tag.

A resident with 10 points waiting for a Henry Mountain rifle tag is 15 years from being in the max pool, and maybe 15 more waiting to draw in the max pool. Now of course, some of the numbers change each year, and some of the non-max pool tags are eaten up by those with 10+ points, but people in Utah think there time is coming, and it aint.

Yet, we continue to clamor for making the entire state wide general hunt a limited entry cluster huck? I just don't get it. I think if people really knew just how bad their draw odds really were, they would shut up.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-09 AT 09:31AM (MST)[p]You are more than 3-5 years out for drawing the henneries.

If you are the last one in the any weapon point group you could still have 12.5 years

If you are the last one in the muzzy point group you still have 7.25 years and that is only if this state was a preference point state. It is not! So half the tags go to bonus point and half go to the rest.

So in reality you are a lot farther off. Hope youth/luck is on your side. you could be waiting for a long time

LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-09 AT 09:45AM (MST)[p]SW's numbers are closer to reality than mine, its a ways off. SW is giving you odds, I was looking at raw data. The odds average what "should" happen with the non-guaranteed tags. My numbers don't do that. Draw odds are not exact. You should always factor a +2-3 year fudge factor.

If you are a non-resident, start saving for a landowner tag.

Good luck. Paunsaguant is more realistic, and if you are a NR I would look at other draw areas also.

If you have 10 points for deer and plan on hunting the Henry's for rifle, I'll almost guarantee you that you'll have 18-20 points before you get a Henry mtn tag...unless they really increase the permit numbers.
The odds there are worse than any elk unit....Even the ones who draw with near points have to feel lucky...imo
