LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-09 AT 03:38PM (MST)[p]This was my second DIY trip to wyoming in two years. We were about 45 miles south of Douglas. We had been seeing 20-25 deer a day but, not any shooters. We finally got some nasty weather and he was with about 10 does. I missed at about 325 and dropped him at about 350yds. If it wasn't for my hunting partner I would have never made the 5+mile hike back to camp. It was a wonderful trip and the most rewarding I have ever been on. I love the west and I'm already planning my next trip.

Congrats on the buck....you guys have some nice Muleys in West Texas..is it hard to get drawn for a tag there?

We have a ranch south of Odessa that has some pretty good muleys. I took one last year that was a 4x4 and scored about 155. Just got back in mid Dec and passed on a young 170 because I had seen a much larger buck in the same area. I would be willing to trade for an elk hunt out west in the next few years. I can't guarntee anthing but have seen 3 deer over 190 in the last two years. It is a very tough hunt. Oh and the buck from WY was 28 outside and 165inches.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-09 AT 07:58AM (MST)[p]Nice Wyoming buck WestTXhunter. I hunt quail near Crane, TX and we have seen some monster muleys tucked back in the sand hils throughout our years of hunting there. It seems like we see a monster every quail season. I don't know how West Texas can produce bucks that big, but it does. The quail lease we hunt on doesn't allow rifles and no one is allowed to hunt the deer.

CONGRATS, NICE BUCK. THE WYOMING MTNS. WILL MAKE A SUCESSFUL HUNT ONE TO REMEMBER AND BE PRODE OF. NOT A HUNT FOR JUST ANYONE!!!

We had parked as close to Laramie Peak as we could and started headed out about 1hr before the sun came out. Everyday before we had just hunted 1/2 day and came back for lunch and then gone back for the afternoon. We hunted hard till about 11 and the front came in and we lost our landmark on the next ridge across the valley. During all of this this buck pops out and that added a new wrinkle to our problem. We took all the meat out that we could and left very little. My pack weighted 96lbs and my buddy's 67lbs. The reason I know is that when we got lost we came across a cabin that was a third generation homesteader in the middle of the national forest they also had a few hunters come up every year and they had a scale. We found their cabin at about 6:45 so we walked for about 5 1/2 hours in a blizzard(thats what this Texan called it). I walked up to the door and offered $100 for a glass of water and a ride back to my tent. We ran out of water about 2hrs into the trip. He is a the taxadermist right now. I also got a great looking antelope on public land DIY but, a bear in Trinidad,CO got in the back of the truck while we were resting in the hotel and stole the head. I still got the meat and thats what is important. All in all it was an amazing trip. I don't think I would have done it again the week I got back but, I am already pumped about next year. Hope ya'll enjoy my story.
