Helena, MT muley problem

The city of Helena is executing (for lack of better words) the local muleys. Some bucks are very nice. Wouldn't that be a good resource for transplanting instead? Why wouldn't the Mule Deer Foundation or another organization fund a transplanting effort? Seems like a waste. I don't believe in wild animals free-ranging in our local neighborhoods but I also don't believe in destroying them either. What to do.

sounds like a transplant wouldnt be a bad idea, bait them to a feed spot under a net, and trade them to utah so they can be re-introduced.we can give you your wolves back in trade!

A lot of people really hate them, but I love them. I think they are fun to see. My kids are learning at a young age to keep their eyes open and spot them. We have a lot of fun having the deer in town. We have seen some really nice bucks around. It only drives my wife nuts because I am always trying to go back around the block to get another look.
Here are a few pics from the last few years.
By the way, wouldn't it be more environmentally friendly to reintroduce a pack of wolves back into the Helena City limits to help keep the numbers down? I like the idea of transplanting too, but I also realize that with NO predators, it creates a strange gene pool.

I honestly don't see it as a "problem"

Apparently, Transplanting deer puts severe stress on them. Just the transplanting process alone could kill them. Then, a chance of diseases spread from the tame herd to a wild one. This is just info I read from FWP. I don't think the bucks are the target animals either. mtmuley

you know i hear that BS all the time whiles everone forgets that in the 50's some rich dude transported a bunch of mule deer from Kiabab AZ. on a train none the less, then by boat to an island off the coast Calif and they are healthy today, but they are facing the same fate...so i call BS !!!!!!

manny, how is the santa rosa thing going? sounds bad. i thought it was a lot longer ago than the 50's when they did the transplant.

NEWS FLASH !!!!

Funny thing is, you'd still get nailed for shooting one with archery equipment with a tag during hunting season. What are they hurting anyway?

If that buck with the big cheaters was in my yard he would be trespassing, therfore no tag needed :)

Just put up a bunch of "NO TRESPASSING/NO HUNTING" signs around town, and next season the California hunters will clean them out!

Sorry HH:)

Eel, what are you doing? :)

Relocation costs money and that kind of money or money for that kind of project is hard to come by.
It's really a sad deal. Nice pic's!!

I dont understand what the problems is. I like deer, deer in my yard are find, deer eating my garden are fine, but in a city i can see why people would not want them around. What are the other options and why is it "sad" that they are being shot and killed?

What is sad is they don't let Bowhunters thin them out and make some money doing it. Instead they are killing them with money out of the budget.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Gator, I don't think an army of bowhunters sending bleeders all over Helena would work out so well. It is Montana, but there are a lot of, well.....transplants around. Missoula is looking at the same problem. Hell, we'd get in trouble there if we petted the damn things to death. mtmuley

I've witnessed two people get raked by bucks during the rut. They were small bucks too. Plenty of videos on the internet. I would not want my wife or kid out of the house to be honest with you. They are deceptive little bastards if you don't know how to read their body language. They are wild animals and to see them domesticated is wrong. Urban sprawl is wrong but there's not much you can do about it. I'd rather have the deer than the neighbors believe me but the two don't mix in the long run. So if they spread disease to the wild deer then they really need to be eradicated. What are they waiting for if that's the case? It doesn't make sense to me that a wild deer living in town would become infected with anything that can then spread to the wild herd and wipe them out.....but I'm no microbiologist and apparently no one in the FnG is either. Not a big fan of this cluster****.

those are some nice deer. we'll take them in new mexico. maybe our draw odds would go up. if you dont want to do that are there any jobs up there? im moving as quickly as i can.

At least the city isn't following the lead of some east coast cities who think administering birth control to the does is a legitimate option.

We here in Orygun will take em! Just dont tell ODFW, they will make sure they dont make it!

Zigga makes a very valid point. in the little valley i live in, there used to be a "tame" deer, most of the time he was fun to have around, and would just wonder from house to house. but in the rut, he became very aggressive, he took after me one time, i was big enough to steer wrestle him down, and he just gave up. but if happend to a kid, it could get bad in a hurry.

The Deer are just too dangerous and should be killed.

I read all the time about rouge bucks going crazy and killing people.
I worry about traveling in the mountains during the Rut.

Come to think of it cars, trains, buses, and some people are dangerous also. We should also eliminate them from our Cities.

Zigga, you better keep your family in doors for sure!

hey bowhunt, have you ever been around a deer or elk that has been some what domesticated? if not you have no idea how dangerous they can be, if you think your a badass, go jump in the pen with a bull elk at the zoo during september, they will be picking up pieces of you from 20ft in the tree's.

I know where a game farm is he could visit. They've got cuddly little elk. The calves would kick his azz if he'd get in the pen with them. I got charged by the 6 point when I stepped out of the truck.

Man I thought it would take more than that post to get you guys worked up to the point that I have to step in the ring with an Elk.

I was kidding with ya.
My brother in law is the Manager of a Game Farm. so maybe I have been around them.

I admit, i did chukle a little at your post, it was funny. but i also know deer and elk could really hurt, even kill some one. but it sounds like you know this too.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-09 AT 12:21PM (MST)[p]There is a problem like this with the whitetails here in Austin. People are taking drastic measures and hunting them with their vehicles. Really - that is the big danger - accidents caused by animals crossing the roads.

Which is more sad, to see them get hit by cars or shot by depredation specialists?

I can take you to about a hundred alfalfa fields in Utah where elk (and deer) are killed on a routine basis all year long. No one cries over these "nuisances" either.
