Sucess in Ohio

Hi everyone,

Well, I'll try posting these pictures and see if it works.

I am from Idaho originally and grew up hunting muleys with my dad. I have since moved to Ohio and have had a blast this year going after whitetails. Ohio created a new law this year that has no minimum age for hunting. You are able to buy an apprentice license for a child or adult first time hunter. They must be with the licensed hunter when out in the field. They are hoping to get younger people involved in the sport. There is also no license or tag required if hunting on land you own. I wish it was like that in Idaho when I was growing up.

We have had a pretty good year between my neighbors and I. I spent the summer taking video and getting trail camera photos of over 25 different bucks that roam the few hundred acres around here. (8 were 140+)Below are the pictures of our neighborhood success.

My deer taken during bow season. It is my largest whitetail to date, but smaller than many I'd scouted. Maybe next year I'll have the patience to wait it out for the big ones.

My 9 yr. old son's first buck (10 point) taken with a muzzleloader. He was pumped. It was fun to watch as he grabbed the antlers after approaching the deer. There was still some air in the deers lungs, and as he lifted the head it let out a loud grunt. He dropped the rack and jumped about 3 feet in the air. I wished I had the video camera. I hope he is smitten for life.

Video footage photos and post harvest picture of the big one I saw over the summer. One lucky neighbor ended up connecting during the rut. To bad he didn't come by my tree. (170 gross 8 point)

I also had to include this photo of my 2nd son's first buck from 2004. He was 5 at the time. We spent the summer practicing shooting, and he made a perfect 30 yard shot through the heart.

Take your kids out early and often, My boys can't wait to be out in the woods with me each year.

Nice deer congrat's! I live in Ohio, whereabouts are you? I live between akron and cleveland. Hunt out west for elk and soon to be other big game (whenever I draw)

Good luck, Ohio has some good bucks, every P&Y buck I have taken required passing on a lot of small to medium bucks, most time minutes or hours before. Peak rut is Nov 10th or so, I start getting serious Nov 3.

I live about an hour south of Columbus.

I have lots of family in Idaho, and was hoping to make it back there this year for the family deer and elk hunt. Maybe next year if time and money allow.

Some real nice bucks. Your boys have a great hunting start.
GO BROWNS! ;-)

Very nice!
Looks like you have quite the hunting community there!
Plus some nice whitetails to boot!

Congrats and thanks for sharing with us.

The buck in the second-to-last picture is a tremendous whitetail. A big congrats to the hunter.

Congrats to you also for successfully getting your kids involved in hunting at so early an age.

That must be the Hocking Hills!!!!!! (Lancaster, Logan?)
I went to Hocking college in Nelsonville quite a few years ago and loved it. I spent 11 years in Westerville (suburb of Columbus). MOved to CO 8 years ago and am in AZ now but cant wait to get back to CO. My mom and stepdad still live in Westerville, sounds like I need to come back and visit them during hunting season!!!
THAT IS awesome your 2 boys have both killed deer at such a young age! I have 3 kids and it sounds like 2 (6 & 4)of them could be hunting in Ohio already!!
Congrats on the success.
Hve you been th ROcky boot store lately?
Rocky's are the only boots i wear!

congrats to you guys! From the looks of it, you had a very successful hunt!! Thanks for sharin pics with us!

Great bucks. I am a recent transplant to Ohio also. If you are an hour south of Columbus, we must be fairly close. I live in Lancaster and work in Columbus.

I actually moved to Ohio about 7 years ago. I lived in Columbus for 4 years while at school (Go Bucks).

I moved to Chillicothe about 3 years ago and have been living here since.

I love being able to walk out my back door and be in my treestand in 5 minutes. I also have a flock of about 30 turkeys that frequent the woods behind the house. (see picture below) I didn't think turkeys would strut or gobble this late in the year, but they are doing both.

The one thing I do miss about Idaho is the wide open country. Hunting here is a whole different world. Bow season is my favorite here. I love getting up in a tree and having deer walk 2 yards from your stand and not realize you are there. It's a thrill to see 20-30 deer filter by your stand during a 2 hour evening hunt. I never had that in Idaho

Ohio has made it very easy for youth to hunt. There is nothing better than seeing your child get his or her first deer.

The 10 point my oldest boy shot was one he missed almost two months earlier with the crossbow (Yes, they are legal here and great for kids). He had that same buck at 25 yards. It was a thrill to hear his breathing suddenly get very deep when the deer walked out, and to see his hands and legs start to tremble. It brought back memories of my first deer. He took the shot and we heard a loud thump. I started jumping up and down thinking he hit it. We went to look for blood, and after searching, found the broadhead buried in a tree. Oh well, The deer won that battle, but my son tied the score up during the gun season.

How cool is that!! It doesn't matter where you get to hunt with your Son. What matters is the time together.

I spent alot of time in Dublin back in the 80's. The thing that impressed me was: You would be in these HUGE Cities, and in 15min you were in these boonie farms.

Congrat's on some fine hunting!
