Determining a Hunting Area

In reading Cameron Hanes & David Longs books they do not provide too much information regarding how big of area to target for a solo bivy style hunter that is 5-10 miles back in the wilderness. Also, where are some general things to look for to find high country mule deer? A guy can get a great look at the country using google earth but realistically what is too small of area or drainage and what is too large to expect to hunt?

1. What size area is big enough to have plenty of hunting area and still be able to cover this all in a 5-7 day hunt? (Mountain/alpine terrain)

2. What areas should a hunter focus on for early season bowhunting? i.e. Altitude, north, south, east or west facing slopes for am and pm glassing?

Thanks for any advice.

If you have good bucks in one drainage hunt it till you get one. it don't matter if it's 10 miles back or 1 mile back if there hunt it. what you need to do is find a place where the road hunters can't get to it and the horses go by it and hunt in the middle. Or you can go to where there are no people 10-15 miles back and hunt. but I try to find a place that is far back but not to far. you see what I'm saying? what I as a hunter do is go to the deer becuse the deer will not come to you. when your hunting the bow season hunt the shadows all day. thats where your bucks will be. I hunt the west faceing slopes in the morning and the east in the afternoon. I like to glass the slope that does not have the sun on them. at noon thay both have sun on them so glass the shadows of lone trees, brush etc. bucks most likly will not get up in the midday. the bucks I hunt bed at 8:00am and then get back up at 11:00am to move beds to the other side of the bush then don't get back up till 7:00PM. let me know if this helps.
