how is the hunting in these units i think i have enough points to draw in the guide draw and was thinking about going with timberline outfitters anybody ever hunt with them or know anything about thier operation thanks in advance

LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-09 AT 03:23AM (MST)[p]I know thomas personally and if you take a look at his site, most the bucks are from the unit your wantin to apply to. Thomas and his sub guides are top notch guys you would not be disappointed with your decision with goin with Timberline Outfitters. Plus if and when time for your hunt does come along i would recommend you ask for Stephen Trujillo, hell of a guy to hunt with along with Thomas

Manny,

If you look at the Nevada guide draw you will see that they give out more non resident tags through the outfitter draw than they do in the regular draw on some units. I never hear anyone complain about this but the old landowner tag in Colorado sure takes a beating.

Here is an example, in 2007 there were 7 tags given out for the late hunt in unit 6 through the outfitter draw with 37 unsuccesful applicants. In the regular you and me draw there were 5 tags given with 497 unsuccesful applicants. Your odds of drawing a deer tag are substantially better in the outfitter draw. Another bitter lesson in the "gots to pay to play" when it comes to hunting.

I haven't hunted with them personally. However, I came in contact with one of their guides on here and he took the time out to help us with some info he had for my wife's Utah moose hunt. He didn't hold back any info and went out of his way to help us. He was very helpful. His handle on monster muleys is ElkFrek. I would recommend that you drop him a PM.

The reason there is more guide tags then regular non-resident tags sometimes is that the guide graw quota is based off the previous year's quota. The guide draw is set before the quotas are set for the year. ex. say NDOW decided to increase tags this year then there will be more tags available in the regular non-resident draw then the guide draw. Hope that helps you out.

I was trying to realisticaly look at my chances for drawing a tag in the next few years. It is apparant that the guides draw is a better draw, I was surprised to find that the tag numbers were that high in the draw. I am starting to research some guides for the 2010 season. I want to hunt Nevada for muleys, just don't want to wait a few more years.

Don't have any experience with the outfitter in question but as a Nevada native I know that many locals will only hunt this area. It has a good rep for producing some fine bucks. It's awfully hard to draw a tag here anymore dwindling numbers of deer due to drought and wildfires make it tough. The area is quite dense in cover with many open sagebrush areas. I put in for it every year and have not drawn it in over 10 years. Usually I end up in the Ruby Mountain area and my friend that is not at all bad.

I hunted with them this past October. Didn't hunt that paticular unit, but one of the easier to draw units next door. I Had a great guide with very good knowledge of the area and had an excellent experience. I ended up killing a mid 160's buck on the last day after missing two shots at a larger buck earlier in the week.

I drew the tag through the guides draw with zero points. I know that they take some real nice bucks in the other more difficult to draw units nearby. I will use Thomas again in a heart beat and can't wait to draw another tag!

If you get Thomas as your guide ,you better be in shape. He is a go getter. He packs about 70lbs of gear on his back ,all the time and never tires. I am not a hunter that prefers guides ,but if i was to choose one it would be him. You wont be disappointed.
