Utah Guided Hunt

I'm looking into a guided hunt in Utah on private ground for mule deer hoping to get a solid 170" or better. I've came across these two guys: Cal Haskel with Weatheredhorn Outfitters and Jed Wayment with J&J Outfitters. Anyone have any experience with either and know what kind of price range we're talking about on these guys? I'd kind of like to have a ballpark price range so I need to know wether I should even call them. Trying to stay under $6k if possible. Thanks.

smokepolejohnson - have you hunted with these guys or know something? If so, could you please pm me?
Thanks

Hunted with J&J last year... just a heads up...they have several ranches and their loyal customers are going to get the good ones. We found that out the hard way...Pm me if you would like more info

LAST EDITED ON Feb-16-09 AT 02:16AM (MST)[p]Not many big ones left in Northern or Northeast utah after last winter, I would go guided in another state.

I have a buddy who has hunted with Fred Wayment, and he had mixed results. He mentioned that they have one or two good ranches and few that arent worth a crud. I guess it depends on what ranch u will hunt and the guide. Best of luck!

I'd go with R & K Hunting and Justin Richins. I have hunted with him a few years ago and had a blast! Great knowledge and areas to hunt for anything from deer and elk to moose. PM me if you want more info.

If you go with Weathered Horn, you want to hunt the Minnie Maude CWMU and have Jason guide you. You WILL kill a 170 Buck provided you can shoot straight....

Tony257,

I hunted the Maude in the late 90's when Cal had it with US Sportsmen. Some sweet habitat and lots of muleys in that country. We did see a brusier or two up Bear Canyon near the top. Had some good memories down there. Are they killing some nice stuff down there now? I know back in the day they'd hunt the hell out of it between the US guys and landowners/buddies. There are some damn fine genetics out there just need some age.

Looked into Minnie Maude last year, DWR biologist said nice 18-22 inch bucks, but nothing huge out there. I talked to the operator (very informational and nice) and a cwmu hunter from the year before and said the same, don't expect anything big. Biologist mentioned it would be a good elk hunt however.

Ridge,

Thats pretty much what I thought, sounds like Cal Haskell still doing alot of wackem and stackem down there. Its a shame, if they would only manage it for more trophy quality, it could be a hell of CWMU.

If you run out of options and have the means to do an excellent high quality deer hunt on private land in Utah, you won't beat www.bucksandbulls.com.
Trust me, i know ;-)

+1 on what slam said, if you don't want to go the conservation tag route you can't beat bucks and bulls. Theres a reason they dont have to advertise heavy like most utah outfitters.

You guys couldn't be more dead wrong about the ole Minnie Maude. Even a bum like me can score one a couple of 170-180 Bucks down there ;)

Justin, I've hunted it lots of times from about 2000-2005 for Deer and Elk.

I've known Cal Haskel for the better part of my life and he is a good guy, can't and won't say anything bad about him or his hunting outfit. Have hunted on most ranches he has had in the past and my experience is these are hunted heavy by members of hunting clubs, however, there are a couple ranches that are exclusive to paying customers and on those ranches you have your best bet at a better buck. I don't know his prices but I'd ask about a self guided deal. many of these ranches are easy to get to know, and you will pay a lot higher price with full guided. If Weathered Horn is your choice I'd look into a ranch called "South Fork" it is located out of Coalville up chalk creek canyon in Northern Utah. about 22k acres and it has been exclusive to limited paying customers for as long as I can remember. Good bucks 180+ potential!!!!
