Point averaging???

Am thinking about recommending to the DOW that they start preference point averaging. I realize the pitfalls, but it could be written so that you can't have "grandma" apply and then turn her tag back in for her points back each year. Need to close that loophole, but would be nice to have it for legitimate purposes.

For instance. We have a group of 4 guys that have from 0 to 5 deer points who want to try and go together. Makes it hard.

This might do much the same as point banking. The guys in our group with 5 points would have to settle for a unit requiring less points, so that helps some with point creep too.

What do you think?

I am guessing you are talking about Colorado. I too would be in favor of averaging points similar to what Wyoming does. The whole problem is that in Colorado you are allowed to turn back in your tag and keep your points if you pay for the tag, so Grandma would definitely be applying with many groups.

If Colorado made it illegal to turn back in your tag like Wyoming or made it so the whole group had to turn back in their tags together, then it is probably doable.

I am all for it.

And yes, I would be for making it the only way you can turn back in your tag for points is if the whole group did it. That would close the loophole.

That might help a little bit, to slow down point creep. IMO the max. point people won't participate but the average point people might.

And it would particularly help me this year! I have 0, and the others in my group have 2, 4 and 5 points! We are going to all try and hunt together. I may just have to pull out the bow again, or we may have to rifle hunt, something I only do once or twice a decade.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-20-09 AT 09:22PM (MST)[p] The problem with Colorado is that there is no hope of a shortcut in the system. You cant get lucky and draw with any less points than everybody else.

Thats is also the the beauty of the system. Everybody has to wait their turn. No jumping ahead in the line. This is exactly what you suggest. Just because you know someone that has a lot of points, that should not put you in front of those that have been waiting for their turn.

I would like to see a squared system in CO(to reward patience but still give the illision of hope) but until then I dont like the idea of anyone jumping in front of me.

I think every other state with points lets you average, why not CO? It just seems like a fairness issue, I doubt it will have any real impact on the point creep issue. We very often have a situation with one guy having 0-1 point, and another with 3 or 4, and it prevents people from getting to hunt together.

You are right that they would need to make it so it couldn't be abused using the "grandma" scenario. I think Utah had this problem, and fixed it by saying if one member of a party turns his tag in to get his points restored, ALL members must do so, like what was suggested above.
