FYI to Mule Deer Hunters in Utah

Every single person I know that hunts with a muzz or rifle has put in for the Southern Unit as their first choice and then the region they usually hunt as their second choice. Its gonna take 5 years to hunt the Southern Region given the new preference point requirement.

Sitting in the Springville DWR office the other day, and two guys are in their having the CO apply on the puter for them. Guys are applying for a few hunts as a group. CO trying to explain it to them, total joke. Guys were clueless. Long story short, they both chose the Southern Region for their "statewide" archery unit for the first two weeks. Archers can plan on regions with tag caps next year, guaranteed. F-ing joke that the DWR had to experiment and put damn near every archer in southern Utah for two weeks.

Just lettin ya all know. I guess my theory that the DH program may restrict in the future is shot, because its about the only way to go . . . and these new changes will make it even more so.

So your saying every archer is going to the southern unit based off of two people?

Everyone I know in the archery business is sticking with their past area's. Any they are not in the southern region.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-09 AT 01:55PM (MST)[p]No. That is not what I said. I told the story of the two guys and then stated my opinion. You can disagree with my opinion based on what you know and observe.

We will see who is right next year. At least you and your buddies won't be disappointed *if they cap the Southern region.

I won't be putting in for the Southern Region. I hoping that I'll have the whole Northern region to myself for a while :D

LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-09 AT 02:41PM (MST)[p]I honestly don't think it will matter that much. If a guy likes hunting Central, then he'll apply for central then MIGHT hunt Southern the last two weeks. I don't know why everyone is bitchin about the new rules regarding having to choose an area. You still have 2 weeks to hunt "statewide" then another 4 months on the extended hunts. 5 months of archery deer and elk hunting? Quit whining, there's a lot of people in other states that would kill to hunt for 4 months straight!

I kinda just threw the archery bit in cuz it was funny. Everyone on here says they won't change what they do, then I saw two people do just that. Sat there and talked about how they normally don't hunt the Southern region but would this year because you had to pick. Funny.

The real point of my original post was to find out how many of the rest of you think that everyone who applies for a rifle or muzz tag is now going to start collecting preference points with the hopes of a Southern tag. To date, one could always pull a tag every other year in the Southern region. That will be long gone after this year. My guess is that they give away about 50,000+ preference points this year.

I know several people that put southern as their first choice this year planning on their second or third choices-northern or northeastern, and have heard of others doing the same. I agree that it's going to get harder and harder. Plenty of guys can't draw central now w/o a point-that's just plain funny!

Just wait till it takes a point or two to draw the other regions up north. Two years applying to hunt the famed northern and NE regions ;-) I bet it happens within the next five years.

i'm bidding you right already see it with the southern and the southeastern.

buckstops - Don't blame the DWR. You can thank your Southern RAC boys for that wonderful predicament. I'm like others and hope everybody goes southern. I just might get a nice remote hunt on the NE unit for a change without other hunters.

It's always an adventure!!!
