The Ending was Bad

Last night I stopped by the local Sportsman's Warehouse to see if they had any primers. I think I will hit Powerball before I see primers again. Anyway, on my way out of the store, there is this video of a rifle deer hunt with a beautiful wide racked 4X4 standing broad side in a bunch of does. When the does finally cleared a shot rang out and you could clearly see where the bullet hit. Could not have been a better GUT shot just in front of the flank. The camera guy even said "ooooh, a gut shot".

OK, so nerves and the huge size of the rack made you miss, that happens, but what happens next is not OK in my book. The buck somehow found a way to spin and walk about 30 yds where he presented an even better broad side shot while hunched up like he was trying to take a hard dump. You could here the rack of another shell in the gun just after shot so the shooter was more than ready to finish him off, but did they....Noooo. They waited and waited and waited before making the decision to finish him with a well placed second shot.

Ya know, we owe it to the prey we hunt to do a clean quick job and I left the store somewhat PO'd that someone would think that was a good job. The gut shot is going to happen now and again for a number of reasons and that's hunting, but taking your sweet a** time when a good follow-up shot is needed is uncalled for.

On another note, anyone know what's going on with the primer situation? Smells fishy (kinda Demoractic fishy) that CCI, Federal, Remington and Winchester all quit making primers at the same time.

264 you are right on the money about the second shot - should have happened. I hate to see any animal suffer unduly. Put him down, get it taken care of. Gut shot animals can lay down, stop bleeding externally, run off and die and never get found. That happens all too often and is sad.

As far as the primers are concerned, they are being manufactured just not distributed, especially to Sportsman's Warehouse which just announced the luquidation of 23 stores. There is a thread on this forum that talks about it. People are buying guns, ammo and reloading supplies right and left right now and supply is not meeting demand. It is darn frustrating for you I am sure.

I agree with dispatching the animal quickly also. Hopefully, the hunter took a poor off hand shot and took alittle more time the second go around to find a good solid rest. Should have done that the first go around though.

Hopefully someone learned from this. Plan your shot, practice on the range prior to going in the field and make your shots good, quick and ethical.

On the primers, powder or ammo, just keep checking in to the local stores. Once the delivery is on the self it go's fast.

Best of luck.

....if they look like they can't get away...haze them towards the vehicle as far as they'll go and finish them off there. Saves on labor.

great post/pic, thanks for sharing

Federal told me in an email that the lack of primers was due to the war in the middle east more than anything....course Obama coming into office didn't help the situation any.

I watched an elk hunting show last night on TV with my 14 year old son (funny now that I think about it, we were deciding what poses to get our elk mounted with as the hides just arrived at the taxidermist). Anyway, the hunt was on a private ranch (I'm pretty sure it was a high fence operation based on some of the conversations). One of the hunters made a neck shot on a bull (there was plenty of time to wait for a broadside shot). After the shot the bull stiffened up and just stood there (broadside). It was obvious that the bull was in severe pain by his posture and the fact that he didn't run off. The guide and the hunter just sat there and watched the bull and the guide said "he should go down". they watched it for probably 30 - 45 seconds and the bull wasn't going down. Then they finally decided to take a second shot. My son and I were horrified that the hunter didn't immediately take a follow-up shot. It was even worse to hear them talking about it while the elk was just standing there in obvious pain. Those were two of the most unethical things I have ever seen.

If the guys who wait to after a hit are on one end of the spectrum I am on the other. If the animal goes down and still looks like it is even moderately alive I'm likely to put one or two more in it. I've seen them go down and get back up and run off. More than that I think you owe it to the animal to finish them as quickly as possible. I also have an unsubstantiated theory that the sooner they die the better the meat is.

Coincidence or not, I was watching a whitetail show on the outdoor channel last night and the same thing happened with a nice whitetail. The guy shoots the buck in the ponch, it runs down into a little valley and stands there. He racks another shell and waits while the buck is broadside, but does not shoot. They go away to a commercial and when they come back they say that the buck laid down, so they decide to wait until morning to go find him. It made me crazy and I can't imagine the fuel that such actions give the anti groups.
I love hunting, but there is nothing redeeming or ethical about letting an animal suffer.

I saw that same show and thought the same thing. And what made you think it was a high-fence hunt? Perhaps the 450 and 400 bulls they took which were standing on a logging road?

My two cents is once you get lead or an arrow in them, you keep shooting, even if the shot is marginal, until they go down.

That just tells me they are trophy hunting - not hunting for the meat and could care less if the meat spoils over night. The ONLY time you should ever let a animal go until the morning, at least by the way I was taught, was if you literally ran out of light trying to track and find it and it would otherwise be illegal to shoot it if you did find it! And I would be out there at the very first hint of light looking for it again! Yes, to me, that is unethical.

Fugitive

Been there done that. You can order from Cabela's or any other website, but all you will get is its on back-order and never see them.

Have you received any primers after putting them on back-order?
