New ID Draw Option

So I was reading about deer hunting in ID and it sounds like last year they implemented a draw in unit 70 and 78. If I understand it correctly they are still considered general units where anyone can get a tag, the difference is you have to burn your "one draw" to get a permit. Someone who wants to hunt these units can't put in for other draw units for deer, elk, antelope, sheep, goat, moose. Effectively, this means less people hunting there and quality should improve.

I wonder if something like this would work in Utah. I haven't thought through it entirely but lets say a resident wanted to hunt the General Southern Region. They would be able to do so but it would mean they couldn't put in for deer or elk or antelope limited entry. The result would probably be better odds on some of the LE. The remaining tags could still go out in the draw.

Any thoughts on this?

Draw odds get better Yes.... Quality on the General rifle units statewide would plumit, the only reason I say this is you basicly turn the South,S.E., Central ect.. into a Meat hunt.
I kindof look at it like the 5 day hunt that happened in the Southern region. I know the past few years we have seen more mature bucks, on the flip side of that, I saw alot of guys get not to picky because they were pressured into killing a deer that they might have let live, years past, because they felt like they needed to fill their tag! I think if you take the opportunity away from those who choose to hunt general units and limited entry hunts, people will putin for limited entry for the first few years then, switch over to a general unit after just to kill something and get it out of their system, then go back into the LE Pool, I personaly dont think that plan would work, but hey, Im not biologist this is just my opinion!

I don't know if I follow the original post exactly. Those units are part of the limited entry (or controlled) hunts in Idaho. Anyone who puts in for a tag in a controlled hunt unit can still buy a general season tag if they are unsuccessful in the drawing. They do have some controlled hunts that have unlimited tags, which pretty much just means you can't put in for any other unit, or hunt any other unit. But, most people would put these as a second choice after putting a top trophy unit as their first choice.

Aside from that, I do think UT should merge the Bonus Point and Preference Point systems and make any deer tag you draw burn your points. It would improve odds for the general season units and for the LE units. Just one point system, you have to choose if you want to hunt trophies or just get the chance to hunt every year or so. No more having your cake and eating it too, this would help with point creep big time.

NO!!!! WRONG!

UNIT 70 IS A CONTROLLED TAG WITH ONLY 175 TAGS TO BE DRAW. UNIT 78 IS A CONTROLLED TAG WITH ONLY 200 TAGS TO BE DRAW. THEY ARE NOT UNLIMITED CONTROLLED TAG UNITS!!

HOWEVER... 73 IS AN UNLIMITED CONROLLED TAG AND IF A PERSON DECIDES TO PUT IN FOR THE TAG, THEY CAN ONLY HUNT THAT UNIT. AND IT IS A 100% CHANCE DRAW. THINK OF IT AS A GENERAL DEER TAG BUT YOU ARE STUCK IN THAT ONE UNIT.

HERE IS A LIST OF THE UNLIMITED CONTROLLED DEER UNITS IN IDAHO:

-20A
-26
-27 (THREE POINT OR LARGER DEER ONLY!)
-36A
-73

ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IS IN THE RULES GUIDE BOOK.

+ 1 Dax.....

Utah combine the Bonus Point and Preference Points to one single point pool-----Bonus Point then everyone would have a 'chance' to draw and make all 5 choices count and burn your points.....50% to max point applicants--ressy/non-ressy.....Maybe ADD a Premium deer tag like on our LE elk and hunt all 3 weapon choices if drawn........get rid of the Waiting Period .....

Any leftover tags...first come type deal and no points required nor burned...

Idaho--yes you can apply for the Controlled hunt-deer or elk and still get a gen tag-deer or a Zone tag on elk if not drawn.

Here is what I think needs to be done in Utah.

It is similar to how Colorado handles their hunting units.

How many of you personally, or know someone, that has moved to a different hunting area as soon as you/they hear about someone harvesting a big deer on one of the general deer hunt areas? It happens a lot. A problem that I see is that when someone shoots a big deer, word gets around and before you know it, there is a guy standing in every draw, tree, creek, rock, and blade of grass. For example, if I were to shoot a 28" 4x5 somewhere in the southern region and word gets out that I have done this, everyone with a general southern deer tag packs up where they are hunting and heads to your stomping ground.

This destroys deer herds in specific areas. Now, I think that Utah wildlife would benefit greatly if the state was devided up in to more general units than just the five or six already established. That way, if a deer was harvested in an area and word got out about it, the whole state woudln't be able to migrate to that area. A southern deer tag holder can't hunt in northern Utah. This is essentially the same thing. Divide the state up into 20 units (or as many as the DWR sees fit) and give a ceritan number of tags out specifically for those areas.

I drew unit 15, you drew unit 20. I can only hunt within the boundries of unit 15, even though you harvested a trophy buck in 20. I can't migrate to your area and chase a big deer that you already harvested(sense my sarcasm in that).

This would eliminate migration of all hunters to one area which in turn allows the herds to stay strong.

Remember, you can't chase a story.

First, I plagerize it from the encyclopedia, then I use spell check to get close, then my wife proofs it and then send it the the printer lady, then the english professor next door rewrites it, then I publish it.

Oh, I failed 'Hooked on Phonics'. I was stuck listening to a fart and trying to spell it! It just doesn't spell the way it sounds! I'll keep trying!!!!

Off the subject, but around $450 just for a license & OTC deer tag! They also sell the rest of the NR quota in late Aug to anyone for a second tag at nonresident price, just for the extra $$$$$. Now they want a points scam, to extort more license and application fees out of nonresidents.

I'm passing on ID this year. So they saved me money with the fee increases!

BuckBullsandBroncs, Thanks for the clarification on the units I mentioned if I was wrong.

I guess I am more interested in the concept of an unlimited controled draw and wanted to throw it out there. I'd be interested to hear if the strategy has been successful as a way to reduce presure and increase quality if anyone else has an opinion.
