Bought this mount at an estate auction in Cody, Wyo. Is this a Blacktail or a Whitetail?

Thanks BenDiesel

Okay, doesn't look like anything we have around here, must be from Texas or somewhere like that. He has very short hair, thought maybe Blacktail because of the dark antlers.

+1 LostinOregon. I would add that it was probably shot very early in the year because of the short hair.

That was funny! LOL
I would have to go with south texas whitey but you never now is could be a coues or coues hybrid.
Jeff

I'M GONNA SAY A COUES PISSCUTTER CROSS WITH A TEXAS PISSCUTTER WHITAIL!!!

WE GOT JACK RABBITS BIGGER THAN THAT!!!

NICE JOB ON THE MOUNT!!!

It may be a Texas whitetail, but not the Texas whitetails I hunt. We have doe that are bigger than that. I think it's just one piss poor job of stretching the cape on the form during the taxidermy process.

When you walk in front of it does it start singing? Saw one like that at walmart a few years ago. LOL

Looks like a whitetail from somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line Early season, and really a pretty nice buck. Good taxidermy job too.

Just an add on to my other comment. I would say an early seaon whitetail, probably archery, and somewhere from the southern states by the size.

Looks like one of the mounts they used to film the Tinks 69 commercials :)

I hope you got it at a good price. I might have issues with my taxi guy before bringing home a mount like that. To each his own!

False. A good taxi never stretches a cape to fit, be buys a form that matches the neck size. That is a very early season deer, and they have skinny necks. They don't swell up until rut. Longer hair can also give the illusion of a large neck.

NOT TRYIN TO STIRR IT sage!!!

BUT WHY YOU BLAMING THE TAXIDERMY???

THE MORE I LOOK AT IT THE MORE I THINK THE DAMN THING IS 1/2 ALBINO & SOMEBODY MOUNTED IT BECAUSE OF IT'S WEIRDNESS???

Bess, Granted, It's tough to criticize someone's work but in this case, the item was bought as is with no personal attachment so i felt more at ease to give my opinion. I too looked this guy over several times before coming to that evaluation. I had mixed signals on the work myself before coming to my own conclusion, not saying that i'm right here, or that you see what i'm seeing, it's just my opinion.

That side view doesn't look bad but the straight on look, that face just doesn't look like the face STRUCTURE of a BUCK DEER, any kind of deer. When i think of the thousands of mounts that i/ve looked at, studied, drawn and mounted a few, color aside, this one has a Elsie the cow looking face.

LAST EDITED ON May-25-09 AT 10:07AM (MST)[p]The straight-on view is distorted because of the camera angle. Still, it's not a very good mounting job.

It appears as if whoever mounted it used nothing but the bare form and did no modeling with clay under the hide. Also, the antlers look suspiciously like repros since the coloring is so consistent. But they might just have a very poor paint job. Easy to tell by doing a scratch test in an inconspicuous
area to see whether it's really bone or just plastic, etc.

And yes, whether the antlers are real or not, it appears to be a TX whitetail.

How To Hunt Coues Deer

I AGREE WITH YOU GUYS BUT I'VE SEEN WAY WORSE TAXI WORK THAN THIS BUCK!!!

I THINK IT WAS eel THAT POSTED A MOUNT A COUPLE YEARS AGO!!!

YOU BOYS WOULD REALLY GET AGGITATED IF YOU SEEN THAT MOUNT!!!

STILL MAKES ME WONDER IF IT WAS JUST A REAL ODD DEER OR IF SOMEBODY WAS JUST MESSIN AROUND???

It's not partly albino, it's UV faded. I had a whitetail near a window that faded on me and in time it looked just like that one. Everyone that saw it thought it was part albino. I dismanteled it and one day when I find the time I'll re-mount it.

LOOKS TO EVEN TO BE JUST UV FADED???
