What's your '08 Muley goal

LAST EDITED ON May-25-09 AT 08:22AM (MST)[p]Sorry 2009, I'm an idiot!

This is my second year bowhunting and last year I didn't bring anything home. I read about all of you long-time Muley afficionados, read Cameron Hanes and David Long, but still have to set my own goal for this year and be realistic.

I am going to give everything I've got this year. Since it will still be my first one, I'd like to come home with a 150-160" Muley (or bigger of course).

I guess where I struggle in my brain, is what I will settle for, since I've never gotten anything I don't want to go home empty. I think I'll try to go as big as I can on the buck, and if I don't succeed, I can hunt extended along the wasatch and get a doe, because their meat is better right?

Let me know what your goals are for this year, and let me know what your opinions are on my strategy, me being the novice.

Thanks MM'ers

You had better focus on 09, cause "08 muley goal" has been over for some time now!

Well......my "08" goal was achieved :)......if you meant what's my '09 goal.......heck, it's simply drawing a tag at this point. I'm 0-for '09 so far in the "drawing a tag" department. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for CO so I can have a place to hunt.

If I draw a tag, my goal remains the same as every year........have fun, enjoy what mother nature provides, stalk/shoot what makes YOU happy, and make sure I come home in one piece.

WELL 2008 IS LONG GONE!!!

I LIKE PART OF YOUR STRATEGY!!!

BUT TO SHOOT A DOE BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GET A BUCK IS NOT GOOD GAME MANAGEMENT!!!

AND I DON'T CARE WHAT THE DWR PREACHES!!!

GOOD LUCK IN 2008,I MEAN 2009!!!

My goal is to see my son finally get a good buck, something around 170" and i'd be tickled clear to death.

For me.....i have killed my fair share of deer over the years, but i wouldn't mind dropping the hammer on a good one if the chance comes along ;-)

How old is your son?
That's awesome. I know I'll be in your shoes someday, hoping for my son as well. He's only 19 months right now, so he's not quite ready :)

Without tag in hand it's tuff to say but with our points, a old high school buddy and i are expecting to draw Wyoming for both Muleys and lopes. I'd like to take my best ever Antelope, which isn't saying a heck of a lot, and for a muley goal, like for at least one of us to have a decent chance at a good buck.

We both have gotten our share through the years and have taken many trips including those where the hunting for trophy deer was excellent. Now, we are just happy to be able to go, have a good time, and maybe add to the big guys we already have.

Joey

My goal is the same every year. Trophy hunt the first two days of the season, and if that doesn't pan out, shoot the first 34" buck I see and head home.

Eel

I've shot 5 muleys over the last five yrs 173 - 203 gross
(3 archery and two rifle). This yr I'll probably end up with a Colorado 3rd season tag and holdout for a 185 gross buck
(minimum).

With all of that said, the first muley buck I shot was with my bow and was a dink 4x3. I could careless about the score b/c I was excited and I finally shot a higher country buck with my bow. I learned a lot from that experience and got hooked on hunting muleys. Bottom line shoot whatever makes you happy.

My goal is to actually draw a tag! I know I won't get my first choice, but if I drew a second choice, I would hammer the first 160 class buck I saw.

My goal this year is a 150+ class frame. The score means very little to me, but with an archery book cliffs tag, that is the goal I have set for myself. I am not against shooting a big heavy 3x4 even if he does not score worth a dang. I like tall massive bucks. Time will tell.

My usual baseline is this, When I get in shooting range of a deer and my heart is pounding with excitement, it is big enough. Shoot what makes ya happy and enjoy the journey!

Chad

Just a nice mature 4x4 or better regardless of the score would probably be my goal. I'd be happy with a 24" 4x4 at any point in the archery season no matter what he "scores."

THE GOAL IS:::

TAKE A DAY OR TWO OFF!!!

SPEND A DAY OR TWO WITH MY SON!!!

HIT THE ARCHERY FOR A DAY OR TWO!!!

THEN HIT THE MUZZ HUNT FOR A COUPLE DAYS!!!

THEN HIT THE RIFLE HUNT ALONG WITH 96,000+ OTHER PUMPKINS IN THE PUMKIN PATCH!!!

GET BACK IN BEYOND WHERE ANY WHEELERS CAN GO AND WHERE VERY FEW MULEYS LIVE!!!

HAVE A LITTLE FUN!!!

AND HOPEFULLY A BUCK OF THE NON-PISSCUTTER KIND MIGHT BE BACK IN ABOVE THE CROWDS!!!

ALL PISSCUTTERS WILL BE SET FREE IN HOPES OF SOME DAY THEY GROW UP & MAYBE RETURN SOMEDAY!!!

DON'T GIVE A DAMN IF I EVER GET ANOTHER SHOT,BUT I'M LIKE PUNK,I HOPE THE BOYS GET A CHANCE AT A DECENT BUCK!!!

Me neither!!

Nor that a good buck, a trophy buck, or a good mature trophy buck, has to be a 4x4. If he has a good frame with mass, i don't care how many points he has as long as it's enough to legally take him in the unit i'm hunting, especially when not concerned with "score" :)

To each his own.

LAST EDITED ON May-25-09 AT 05:23PM (MST)[p]My goals are to kill a buck that gets my heart rate going. I have killed a few great bucks with my bow. So if it doesn't get the heart going I won't even draw back. My main goal is to take a decent bull elk. I have been after a few bulls for 3 years and have put in 16 days total on these animals without success. This could be the year of the bull.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Two 200 ty. or 230 nt. or nothing and a 370 net bull. I have a bull that grosses 383 and nt 369 7/8 but still need a book bull. And i have killed many big bucks.

HEY Saint???

Interesting how season goals vary.

For me its very simple since this will be our first shot at mulie hunting in Colorado for my family. First goal is we gotta draw the darn tag which seems simple enough. Then if we draw we get to spend a few days in the hills living out of our packs, share a couple of stories, create a couple of new ones, or simply enjoy the peace of it all with loved ones. Now ultimately I wanna put the smack down on some buck and size really isn't much of an issue either and for both of my boys to harvest their first mule deer as well and to be there with them when the opportunity presents itself...I expect after a couple of years our season goals will graduate to something larger as would be expected.

My Goal is the biggest of the pre season scouting and then worthy of the wall or else unique if I can't kill a good one it really doesn't thrill me anymore to shoot a little one

My goal is to have FUN! Gonna be hunting with my family and friends and I expect that goal will be easy to acheive. Seems every season is better than the last so I'm expecting that trend to continue this year. My son and I have put in for a ton of critters on LEH but if we don't get drawn we'll still be hunting the GOS critters such as muleys. My personal goals for mule deer are loftey but attainable. Is another 200 incher in the cards?? Would like to get one above treeline this year. If I don't, I'll have fun trying. My muley tag soup always tastes better when the freezer is full from the critters my son has whacked and stacked. ;)

Last time I checked my pockets I have no tags that mule deer in them!! TIME WILL TELL YOU NEED TO ASK AFTER THE DRAWS...OUR YOU SHOULD SAY ...WHATS YOUR 09' UTAH MULEYS GOAL!

My goal is to simply be able to go hunting for them and see some. To be able to shoot a doe would be great!

My main goal is to shoot my bighorn sheep in the first day or two so I can go muley hunting. For mule deer, my archery goal in Wyo is 180. And the same for CO muzz. But I think the CO muzz season holds more potential.

My wife is going deer hunting for the first time this year. Getting a decent buck for her is far more important than anything I take. And having a good time with her in a relaxed hunt is the main goal.

I have a one gallon zip-lock sack full of unused licenses. I could make enough tag soup to feed the Russian army. I'll likely add to that this year.

Good luck to everyone; I hope all of you exceed your goals.

To get out and have alot of fun!!! Hopefully bring home something better than a five point bull and better than a three point buck. Always would like to do better than the year before!

I am hoping and holding out for a 170+ with the tag I have this year for archery. I know the area quite well and feel this is an attainable goal. Either way, should be fun.

Thanks for all your feedback gentlemen. I wish you the best in your scouting and hunting. I just hiked up to a basin this weekend and couldn't go up as high as I wanted, still too much snow. But I want to start seeing the velvet muleys. I don't see much on my train commute into Salt Lake each day :)

This is also my second year bowhunting. My goal is to learn as much as I did the year before. My dream is to take a MONSTER BUCK! Mule, Blacktail, or hybrid it makes no difference to me.

Good luck to everyone!

My goal depends on what tag(s) I (or either of my sons) draw. So far we haven't drawn any. Still waiting to hear back from MT, NV, CO, AZ, and WY. If all else fails, we will be guaranteed our archery deer tags here in SD. That goal will be to get my sons (13 and 15) their first archery bucks. After they get theirs, I will concentrate on another wall hanger for myself.

I have two goals first get my son who just turned 12 a buck or lope. For meit's to see some new country in other states.

Well my '09 goal is to kill my first deer. I have my eye on a deer that was a 6x8 last year and was about 195.

1. Help my bud get a good buck with his bow
2. Shoot one bigger then the one I shot with my bow last year.

>My goal is the same every
>year. Trophy hunt the first
>two days of the season,
>and if that doesn't pan
>out, shoot the first 34"
>buck I see and head
>home.

Wow Eel.. You really lowered your standards and I suppose you would shoot a 34" 3x3 or a maybe a 4x3? I remember when you would trophy hunt for at least three sometimes even four days and only shoot bucks in the 220+ range that were heavy, symetrical 4x4's. That's pretty disapointing.. I is shocked..

My goal is to kill another pope and young buck this year out of the same field where i have killed my 2 pope and young bucks the last 2 years.

My goal is to kill my first muley. This will be my fourth season in CO and my third mule deer tag. The last two were really an after thought if I ran across a buck while bowhunting elk. I'll still be chashing elk, but I've got muley fever this year.

I plan to spend time scouting this summer for high country bucks and hunt the best buck I can find. When all is said and done, I'll be happy to shoot anything respectable with my bow. A velvet covered respectable rack is probably my highest goal. I'll tell you what I consider respectable if I kill it.

I drew a Utah Diamond rifle tag and I'm trying to keep it realistic...a good mature buck 24"+...but like a lot of people say to each his own, as long as I have a good hunt and have a lot of fun I'm not worried about a "score"
