HOW DID I NOT DRAW A TAG????????

Sorry,

Yes I'm screaming a little! If you look at the numbers for unit 21 archery for CO, I should have drawn no problem. 5 points for me 5 points for my Dad who is a resident. 29 tags drawn for non residents, funny thing is I should have been in the top 15 if you count it backwards from the updated stats. There were 5 people with more points. I dont get it at all! I called CDOW yesterday and waited for 23 minutes with no answer, I will be calling back on Monday, but this just suxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx!

It does appear you should have drawn with 5 points this year, you did have 5 points before the draw and not after right?

Because that unit was profiled in the public eye and folks who had accumulated preference points elsewhere, jumped over and applied for 21 instead. Last years stats are no guarantee, especially when 21 recieved some attention in the print media.

It sucks but its reality.

Gunnison basin units have declined, other units in the NW are down, so folks started jumping towards the far western units that didn't have the winter kill in 07/08. Carters hunting fool and other magazines emphasized the units and people jumped ship to apply there. Give it a few years and those units will be "overhunted" or "overrated" and there will be a new hotspot that the magazines will promote.

Actually, the 2009 hunt recap suggests they should have drawn the tags if they both had 5 points.

My updated page now shows 6 points, I still dont get it just checking the number s i should have been in between the 10th and 20th person selected according to points. Oh well i guess!

Did you apply online or did you send in your paper app? Only thing i can think of is maybe there was an error on a app. But still generally they will call you and clarify. Don't know buddy sorry!

Archer17,
this one stumps me, too. I've been reading these hunt recap summaries for years so I at least think I know how to read them.

You absolutely should have drawn if you had 5 points going into the drawing with 29 NR tags available (35% x 85 tags = up to 29 NR available:

1 Non-res (NR)drew w/ 11
1 NR drew w/ 9
1 NR drew w/ 8
1 NR drew w/ 7
1 NR drew w/ 6

This totals 5 NR tags from the up to 29 available.

At the 5-PPoint level, there were still 24 NR tags left.
There were only 10 NR applying for 24 tags, so you should have drawn and your father whether or not you were on a group app (I think CO treats him as a NR if he's on your app, but it shouldn't matter, there were plenty of tags at that level for NR and resident.)

You can see this because there were still 15 more NR tags available at the four point level with 27 NR applying for those, so some NR w/ 4 did not draw, but everyone above 4 did.

Double checking the Preference Points Required, that is exactly how many points it said you needed to have a chance at a NR tag: 4 for NR and 1 for Resident. But you say you had 5 going into the 2009 draw. It doesn't make sense.

So I'm either not reading this right, or you didn't apply correctly (wrong unit, weapon, season,) or there's a problem w/ DOW, which I doubt.

Did anyone else take the time to check this for him on the hunt recap summaries? Are we reading this wrong?

Archer17, let us know what you find out. The hunt recap summaries have always been reliable for me over the last 7 years of reading them. I've never found a mistake.

God bless your efforts

if one tag is left for 2 what would Co do about that?
mayby there was a migration form other units ...

Christian, you are doing the math correctly, except that non-residents get 35%, not 40%. If you read the "draw summary", it tells you how many resident and non-resident tags were drawn (29 non-resident in this case, 35%).

yes, it is 35%- thanks- I forgot. I fixed my first post based on 35%, but he still should have drawn?????

Curious to see how this pans out.

Looking at the 09 recaps you should have drawn. I had a friend that made an error on his application, wrong dollar amount by 1 whole dollar. He just got his money back with no point or tag. His mistake and he accepted that. The only thing I can think is that there was an error on the application. He was couldn't figure it out until the check came back.

lostinOregon- the only strange thing is he said he DID get a point, so he must have applied correctly or he wouldn't get a point.

Some politician probably wanted tags in that unit so they gave your tags to him? J/K don't know what happened that seems odd.

conspiracy theory....maybe a deer in 21 has some bigtime connections in washington and blah blah...i dunno sure seems like u should have got a tag....

has anyone seen my kittie

On the application,if you don't check the box that says "Do you have preferance points" they won't look up to see if you have any points for the drawing. I believe I didn't get a bear tag last year for making that mistake. That little box is easy to overlook. Of course I have been wrong many times before.

I am in the same confused book. I had 9 resident points for unit 21 -3rd rifle and it says i was unsuccessful. What the heck??
Also my son who is 13 and drew unit 22 last year as a youth was unsuccessful this year in applying for the same youth hunt as last year? What the heck. He drew it last year with no points.

Isnt there some deal that hunts that require residents a certain number of points have the nonresident quota dropped to 20%?

Unit 21 3rd season took 10 points to draw this year. Buck tags in unit 22 were cut 60% this year.

unit 22 buck tags were cut the 60% last year right before the draw when they learned of the winter kill. He still drew a youth tag last year with no points and this year drew nothing and had 1 point. I dont get it

You're right, I was comparing 2007 and 2009 numbers.

Not sure how he drew last year and still had a point this year.

In 2009:

32 of 154 residents drew 2nd season with 0 points

108 of 139 residents drew 3rd season with 1 point

So he wouldn't be guaranteed 2nd season with 0 points, and wouldn't be guaranteed 3rd season with 1 point. There is no set-aside youth quota for buck tags.

One of you must have had only 4 points, that is the only thing that makes sense, that or you applied for one of the rifle tags, not the archery tag.

If indeed you both had 5 points and applied for the archery tag, the DOW owe you an explanation.

Well I called DOW today and you are right on why he didnt get drawn this year. I asked then how the heck did he get drawn last year? The response was "He got lucky last year"

Well! I want to thank you for all the help and here's the final update!

Dad THOUGHT he had 5 points just like me, however he only had 2. I talked to Jerry at the cdow and he was very helpful. So since we applied as a group they use his points on the NR draw, so you guessed it. Well no harm no foul on his part, and we will still hunt another state.

I have him hunting again, 30 plus years after Vietnam so thats the fun part. Plus he's been practicing with his bow for a while now, so yes Im proud.

So thanks again

Archer17
thanks for letting us know! Sorry you didn't get the tag you had planned, but at least you still get to take him hunting!

I'm always watching the various states draws for mistakes, but over the years, I've found very few. I thought yours might be one, but I guess not.

Best of luck.
