Preserving Velvet

I am doing a packpack high country hunt in CO the end of August while the bucks are still in velvet. I am curious as to what methods you guys use for preserving the velvet and the capes? I have read a little on the subject but don't have a firm game plan yet as to how to best handle this if I should be fortunate enough to tag a respectable buck. Any input would be appreciated.

Buddy you can look it up at Taxidermy net. Go to there forum than go to deer and gameheads. Go to search type in what your after it will give you some post that you can get what you after. I hope that helps.

I remember reading a post last year where there was a lot of great info about preserving velvet. I would look up what Bohntr had to say about it in the MM search engine. I remember something about a needle and syringe (SP) formaldyhyde (sp) and cutting the tips of the antlers and milking out the blood.

Geesh, I need a dictionary tonight.

They have some good products you can buy at Van Dyke's Taxidermy. Their website is good and they also have a good catalog.

You can inject them from the base, like was said in the article, or inject them from the tips, and have it run down to the bases. You can also have them freeze dried (best method), or can even have them redone in artificial velvet.

Just be careful if you shoot one, and don't start grabbing at the antlers. It smashes the velvet down, damaging it, and makes it look like crap. You want the velvet to look fluffy. In my opinion, most injection jobs makes the velvet look dead, flat, and ratty.
