i was just reading on the dwr page that in conjunction with mdf they managed to purchase 5700 acres on the Tabby Mountain Management area. 1000 thank yous to all involved and especially to the Smith family for selling it for less money to them to ensure it stayed a wildlife area instead of more money to a developer.

To me this is exactly what needs to happen more often than it does. Hopefully this will set an example for future land issues.

As some of you know i spend alot of time on Tabby Mountain and am completely excited about this new land.

Again THANK YOU to everyone involved!!!!

I do wish the best and hate to be negative here, but greed being what it is these days, case and point...

7 years ago Calif. Dept. fish n game used revenue from tags and license's to buy a 3500 acre ranch in SisQ county, I basically cut my teeth hunting deer on that ranch in the 60's, sounds good right?

Well a few years later they gave it over to the BLM, it was the next season that the muzzy hunt was stopped, now only one gate and very restricted hunting, where did the DFnG have the right to use revenue $ to buy the ranch and then give it over to the BLM, anyways as you can see I never got over it!

I would be as upset as you if that happened to me.

The area is all winter range which will be locked during winter months to allow the deer and elk to winter without human interference, theres already winter ground there that is locked during the winter. As for them giving it over to blm, well i cant say wether or not that will ever happen. even if they did do that as long as its not less than 5 years im ok with that, deer and elk will be better off from the previous 5 years. during hunting seasons here unless it snows early theres few deer and very minimal elk and i stress minimal.

Now that im thinking about it... would be freaking great if theyd buy up the sand creek cwmu (hint hint state of utah). lmao

I sit on the Habitat Council as the Big Game Rep, working with the UDWR. You can give yourself a pat on the back if you have purchased licenses in the past. The purchase of this property was made possible, in part, with the habitat monies from licenses. Part of each license, fishing and hunting, goes into habitat projects.

This is a great purchase, one that could not have been completed without the help and willingness of the landowners. So a big kudos to the Smith family for their vision of the future and being willing to ensure the habitat remains for future big game populations.

On a related note, I won't spill too much info until the land deal has closed, but there is another land deal in Utah which will help our keep a very nice river and surrounding winter range from becoming trophy homes.
