I am going deer hunting in Colorado unit 43 with a muzzleloader. What expectations should I have in terms of the size of buck? What should I pass/not pass on? Is it worth carrying my bow for a bull elk? Thanks.

43, 47, 471, 44, 444, etc. all suffered a horrible winterkill year before last. Drainages that before had multiple mature bucks now have none or a couple. It really was bad. I gave info to a guy last year for a high country hunt. He saw 1 mature buck in 6 days. That said, there are always a few here or there. You will be competing a little with archers, but mainly with the High Country Rifle tag holders.

Get high and enjoy the beautiful country. Glass, glass, glass. By the time your hunt rolls around they will be shedding velvet, so plan accordingly. More deer in 43. Best of Luck.

I hunted 43 last year and in one day saw 28 bucks with the largest being a 180 typical. I had seen a great buck and was holding out for him but never connected with him. Winter was not to bad on the deer over there they go all the way down toward Silt and New Castle to winter. The unit just lacked a decent number of mature bucks last year. This year i have been seeing a decent number of good mature deer 180+ I think this year will be great.
If you are there to kill a big buck don't mess with elk hunting. Once you kill an elk your deer hunt suffers.
