Lets hear from you on your state forecast for mule deer. The good the bad. Ill go first with Wyoming. Wyoming will be good this year with older age bucks in the harvest. Its just a guess so whats yours?

From my friend ,a biologist in Wyoming, said there hasbeen good moisture and plant growth ,in return this leads to good antler growth.

Idaho: Lots of moisture through the spring and up until now. Starting to heat up and dry out. This hunting season will be noisy with dead over growth and increasing fires. More medium bucks than does and smaller bucks. You are looking at a lot of 3-6 age bucks with possibly some nice small extra points due to the fires in the past and good moisture and growth this year. Good luck to everyone and GodBless!!!

P.S. IDAHO DON'T BE PICKY THIS YEAR!!!

I predict nothing special with the exception of Nevada.

Colorado will once again whoop on the other states even with the tag cuts and lower deer numbers.

A few big ones here and there on the general hunts and LE units in every state, but overall I think it's going to be a fair year at best.

Antler growth actually seems to be slower and down from most years in the highcountry. The deserts and southern units hopefully are fairing better.

mixed bag in Colorado some areas have 6 plus year old deer others few old enough to be toads moisture is good could be an early rut as I see cotton wood trees turning yella already who knows though.

I have been out in the Central Utah unit, Southeastern unit and Southern unit. I have observed more young bucks this year then last year. I have also seen a slight increase on mature bucks. Just my observations. The area I hunted last year had a lot of pressure, hot weather and a full moon. Not many bucks harvested in the fall of 2008 in my little hole. Thus maybe the slight increase in young and older bucks this year.

ive seen a lot more mature bucks this year in the south. i think ts gonna be a good!year. maybe not excellent but i think a lot of mature bucks will go down.

I'm gonna update this just a tad now that I've had a chance to do some more scouing.

Antler growth seemed to be a bit slow this year, but it sure seems like they've put on the inches the last few weeks. I'm amazed at some of the growth a few bucks have put on the last few weeks.

Still don't think it's going to be an amazing year, but there's definitley going to be a few monster bucks taken in '09-including northern Utah.

I'm pretty excited to see how it all turns out.

On another bright note there seems to be a lot of good looking healthy fawns running around this summer too. Something I didn't see much of last year.

Good luck! T minus 3 days for Utah!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-09 AT 10:03PM (MST)[p]once the deer started growing their horns I went on two to three hikes a week and several over night'ers. I actually wore a pair of new shoes out! I hardly took the same trail twice. I have seen just about every buck those hills have to offer. It seems we had a huge winter kill nothing but does and medium bucks. The bucks don't have the trash, they don't have the tine length or the mass. I don't even think they will make pope and young! I think the moisture was so bad that it made the deer stay in there beds for days because it was so wet. I know I would have! The coyote population is up as well as the other predators. Also A friend of mine has Sasquatch on his camera so i wouldn't even go out after dark if you know whats good for ya..

So my forecast for the archery hunt is the hunting will be poor at best. It will be so packed with tree huggers and hunters I doubt you will even see a doe. So you guys can all go pound sand cause I wont be hunting until mid September. I hate work!

Archery is a year round commitment!!

Looks better than last year here in Price Utah area. But still have a way to go.

My forecast is for a great year. Lots of fresh air, plenty of pre-hunt excitement, time with my boys, lots of hiking and glassing in beautiful country, and maybe, just maybe, a shot at a 170+ buck or two. :)

Good luck to everyone and remember to enjoy every part of being able to hunt big game.

I am seeing lots of good bucks in the Central region, lots of bigger 2 points as well. I was up in the Uintas Last week. Seen 5 bucks, one big mature 4 point, a nice 3 point, a 2 point with a 19" spread, and 2 small forked horns. Saw about a dozen doe and a fawn with spots. Havent been to any of the other regions yet, but I think it will be a pretty good year. Saw a picture of a big 10x6 near kennecott, he was the same buck I saw last year up there. I am seeing tons of deer by my house as well. I a excited. I have an archery tag and have not been out yet!~ I am going crazy! I am heading out to the NE region on Friday with my son. Hopefully he will get something. we have deer and elk tags and will be grateful just to fill his tag. I am holding out for something bigger this year. Of course i say that and I know I will get so excited at the first small fork horn that walks by I will probably shoot it! Some of my best memories are of me and my friends taking small bucks. I dont care what size my son shoots, if he gets anything it will be an awesome trophy!

I hunted Wyoming G tag and southeast Idaho this year and I am so suprised at the difference. I live in Idaho and region G is only 1 hour from my home, there in Wy I saw a 4 point buck everyday that I hunted and did harvest a average 24" 4point. I have hunted Idaho in the Soda Springs area and been out alot this year, I bait bears, archery elk hunt, I have been in the woods all but maybe 10 days since the begining of sept, all in the same area and I cannot believe what our idaho fish and game is doing with this deer herd, I believe that it may ruin the genitics and we may never recover if we dont stop killing every buck out there. I am very luck that I have the chance to hunt out of state right next door in Wy, too bad Idaho cant pull thier heads out and be more like Wyoming.

The Paunsaugunt has a lot of little 4x4s, but the big boys are a little harder to come by. Hopefully, we luck into a big boy this weekend on moms hunt on there! Should be fun, I will post pics when I get back.
