Well after getting our (my brother and I) wilderness only tags in the mail the DOW sent a letter with it basically saying that the deer were few and far between in the unit. And dont expect to see much.
After scouting all summer long and not seeing not even a single doe this proved to be true and I thought I may have to return my tag. Two weeks before season we finally found some deer. It was a bachelor herd of about five bucks with the biggest one being about a 170. This being our last scouting trip we decided to hunt that area.
The day before season we backpacked in about four miles to our base camp. After setting up camp we started glassing and found a few deer up above timberline. The next morning we decided to head up where we had seen those deer.
About two miles out of camp we came to where we had spotted the deer the night before. It was a big nasty basin that just looked "bucky". After a few hours of glassing we had only turned up a few does. We decided to eas up to try to get a little higher. After going through some really nasty blow downs it started to open up so we started glassing.
There right above us I could see some movement. Putting my binos up I could see six bucks coming over the ridge about 300yds away coming right at us. Scanning them one by one. The very last buck I came to was the biggest damn deer I've ever seen. I saw that drop tine and about crapped myself! I got down on my belly and waited for them to get closer. They stopped as soon as they got into some cover.
I could only see one of the smaller bucks and soon all the bucks were had gone over a small ridge. After a few minutes we were trying to make a plan of attack. I got up off my belly and we decided to try and flank them. At that moment for what ever reason the deer came back over the ridge.
I laid back down and got ready. I ranged where they were at and it was about 200yds. The big boy came up and stopped broad side. Being an almost striaght up shot I put the cross hairs on his back and let it rip. I shot right over him but he didn't move. This time I put the crosshairs right on him and dropped him right in his tracks.
I couldn't believe what had just happened. I could not believe the size of him when I got up to him. I definatly got lucky and it will probably not happen again for a very long time but If hadn't put in the work that summer scouting every area I could think of I wouldn't have him on my wall.
Three days later my brother connected with the next biggest buck in the group. It was one hell of a season.
