really pretty buck-nice job-I love that last pic-shows his points really nice and that nice blood dripping

Well after getting our (my brother and I) wilderness only tags in the mail the DOW sent a letter with it basically saying that the deer were few and far between in the unit. And dont expect to see much.

After scouting all summer long and not seeing not even a single doe this proved to be true and I thought I may have to return my tag. Two weeks before season we finally found some deer. It was a bachelor herd of about five bucks with the biggest one being about a 170. This being our last scouting trip we decided to hunt that area.

The day before season we backpacked in about four miles to our base camp. After setting up camp we started glassing and found a few deer up above timberline. The next morning we decided to head up where we had seen those deer.

About two miles out of camp we came to where we had spotted the deer the night before. It was a big nasty basin that just looked "bucky". After a few hours of glassing we had only turned up a few does. We decided to eas up to try to get a little higher. After going through some really nasty blow downs it started to open up so we started glassing.

There right above us I could see some movement. Putting my binos up I could see six bucks coming over the ridge about 300yds away coming right at us. Scanning them one by one. The very last buck I came to was the biggest damn deer I've ever seen. I saw that drop tine and about crapped myself! I got down on my belly and waited for them to get closer. They stopped as soon as they got into some cover.

I could only see one of the smaller bucks and soon all the bucks were had gone over a small ridge. After a few minutes we were trying to make a plan of attack. I got up off my belly and we decided to try and flank them. At that moment for what ever reason the deer came back over the ridge.

I laid back down and got ready. I ranged where they were at and it was about 200yds. The big boy came up and stopped broad side. Being an almost striaght up shot I put the cross hairs on his back and let it rip. I shot right over him but he didn't move. This time I put the crosshairs right on him and dropped him right in his tracks.

I couldn't believe what had just happened. I could not believe the size of him when I got up to him. I definatly got lucky and it will probably not happen again for a very long time but If hadn't put in the work that summer scouting every area I could think of I wouldn't have him on my wall.

Three days later my brother connected with the next biggest buck in the group. It was one hell of a season.

Great job! Thanks for sharing the story.

>killer buck or should I say
>bucks. Congrats on a succesfull
>hunt. What unit or area
>were you guys in?

I'm sure enough time has passed that he can't even recall the unit.

Bro-- That buck and mount are gorgeous. You are very fortunate to have that deer on your wall. Sounds like you earned it too!

Great story and pictures! Brings back memories of my high country buck hunt a few years back. You did learn a valuable lesson. If the angle is severe (up OR down), you need to hold low, not high!

Great buck and thanks for sharing the story. The fact that you persisted through some scouting trips without much being seen is great. And be sure to keep that spot a secret. Those big bucks will return!

I think you have a really nice brother for letting you shoot twice!! Couple more weeks and we can try again, can't wait....

I killed him in unit 999 the best unit in the state here's the hunt code if you want to apply D-P-999-99-P

That is one incredible buck. I hunted the high country of Colorado last year with my bow and will be out at it again here in a month. We scouted out there last week and saw some new beautiful high country, found some pretty descent bucks, but man.........nothing quite like the one you put down. Congrats on just an awesome buck!!!! Thanks for sharing

What do I think? Dude, that is a very impressive buck and I think you are very fortunate to have punched a tag on a buck like that! Outstanding buck! Congrats!

Both Bucks are nice The big one is just outstanding.
I have hunted the "Unit" a few times. You really don't get to see $hit LOL

about how many points does the High country buck hunts take or atleast this one? I have 7 NR points

for archery and muzzleloader you dont need many if any points, but 7 is a good bit for a early rifle tag. The sangre de cristos are the only place id use 7 points for a early rifle tag.

What do you know about the Sangre's? I've got an early rifle tag... I've been burning up the soles on my boots poking around but still haven't found a giant. Tough country to move around in, as you probably know... Not that your gonna tell me where one is tied up, just curious if you've hunted that country and/or where you have seen good bucks.

Burgerman ~

As you know there is a ton of area above timberline in the Sangre's. If you get a chance take a hike up around Medano Lake. Word got out and the early season hunters were chasing a huge buck around up there last year until it got pushed out. It did not show back up until later in the year when it was seen on Wolf Springs Ranch and estimated at 40+ by the Ranch foreman. This area may not hold as many deer as the Northern part of the unit but it there does tend to be bigger bucks killed. Up north we always see a few nice bucks up around Busnell Peak and the hike into Stout Creek Lakes is not to bad, just remember to pick up some firewood before the trail starts to switch back as there is nothing above there.

Send me a PM if you have any questions.

Good Luck..

That's an awesome looking velvet buck.......congratulations on a fine buck.

b2h,

I need to congrat you twice! That is a sweet buck! Those extras expecially the extra horn out of his base is truly remarkable! One of these days I could only be so fortunate! Nicely done!

Stryker,

I found a nice one this weekend! Very windy so tough to get a good look with the scope blowing around. He's wide, tall, has good forks and extra points here and there ;-) I took some pictures through my spotting scope, but didn't get a chance to unpack before work this morning and haven't seen them myself. Maybe I'll start a new tread tomorrow if any came out good enough, just to get some other estimates... Sorry I can't say where just yet. I'm sure you understand. Maybe I'll have some pictures after the season :)

Thanks for the tips. I've still got three weekends to poke around and intend to spend them above treeline. There are still a couple areas I need to look at but I will definitely check out your advice.

Thanks!
