Road hunting on the bow hunt

9 million people in my area this past weekend. I have never seen such a zoo. I have been watching multiple groups of bachelor bucks the last several months, and come saturday there were guys running them all over the mountain like it was the rifle hunt. I am disgusted. There was truck driving back and forth on the high way trying to road hunt. First of all who road hunts from the highway, secondly who does this on the opening morning, third what where they going to do if they saw a buck. This isn't the rifle hunt "ROAD HUNTER GUY". For any of you that have heard softball guy from Jim Rome we have a new character named "ROAD HUNTER GUY". I am just glad that I am one of the few that is actually hunting for the entire first week. The caravans of trailers have left and now I have the place to myself again. I didn't think this region picking thing was going to be a big deal, but I was way off on this one.

For all of you that know "ROAD HUNTER GUY" you know what I am talking about!!!

S.S.

Note to ROAD HUNTER GUYS: If you're riding around all day on your quad, or standing up in the back of a truck being driven all over the country side, you really don't need to waste all that money on full camo, including face paint. I gotta admit though, you sure look cool!

I like the road hunters... It just means there's less people for me to deal with while out hiking the hills...

It's one plus to the climbing obesity rate...more clowns in their trucks and less on the mountain. God bless McDonalds and God bless lazy.

eel - ALMAO!!!! I can't tell you the number of times I have asked myself that same question. I just shake my head when I drive by and see somebody standing in the back of the truck with a blanket on the cab (don't want to scratch the bow), hat backwards with 5-7 scent wafers flapping int he breeze, full face paint and camo, and get this, I even saw a guy wearing a backpack. A BACKPACK for hell sakes, standing in the back of the truck. I've seen people come to full draw in the back of a truck before. It's a joke.

It's always an adventure!!!

I was riding shotgun with the game warden a couple of years ago on the opener. We pulled a guy over who had his 14 yr old son doing just what you are talking about. Dad driving.....son standing over the top of the cab......
When we pulled them over to talk to them, the kid had his arrow knocked and the arrow "ready" for action in his wisker biscuit. He was standing there shakin when we were talking to his dad and we wondered why the kid was holding a big wad of paper towells. The kid opened his hand and there was a 3 inch wide deep gash in the palm of his hand. He said that his broadhead had sliced his hand open when he was knockin his arrow while drivin down the dirt road. He said his dad told him to "buck up" and squeeze the paper towells till they got done "hunting". I bet that kid needed thirty or so stitches.....I was dying inside.......:)

What a shame. Everybody knows if your gonna road hunt with a bow you have to do it in a mini-van. Have your buddy drive while you sit in the back arrow knocked ready to go. When you pull up along side a deer you have your buddy pop open the automatic sliding door and you release the arrow. Deer never see it comeing. (Only kidding of course)

I drive the mirror lake highway two or three times a week to get back and forth to work. I can't tell you how many times I pass some (many) jackazz's going 10 mph looking for deer. What gets me is that they often times don't try to even move or pull over when you come up behind them. So here they are going 10 mph down a paved highway with a speed limit of 55 mph and they can't even have the courtesy to pull over so you can pass. Then when you do pass them they shake their heads like your the jackazz! Seriously, I could beat some of these pathetic losers. What is the point of even buying a tag? Is that really even considered an experience? Lame, lame, lame!

I also like the road hunter guys that means they are not in my areas. Also if you are frustrated with the road hunters guys then you must be a road hunter guy yourself or not far from it.

Archery is a year round commitment!!

I have never heard a bigger bunch of cry babies in my life. Who really cares how someone eles chooses to hunt! A youngster hurts himself, and he get mocked! Gimmie a break you hard core tuff guys! I know you can't legally shoot from the road or vehicle (unless your are disabled). And it's just plain poor judgement to have an arrow nocked while driving. But if someone want to spend his day eating dust in the back of a truck, more power to 'em.

I spent all day in the truck this year. My 4yr old boy, 66yr old Dad and 10 old week pup had a great time. Guess what, we even saw bunch of deer. And I can guarantee you this, if one had been to my size standards, I'd have tried to get a shot at him.

Rave on horse chit, the flies will eat you.

Hahaha this post is awesome. I say let road hunters road hunt. Doesn't bother me a bit. Less folks on the mountain.

What chaps my ass is archery hunters that think they can just run head-on at a group of deer in the wide open with the wind at their back.

As for the comment about "dying inside" over the kid with his hand cut open. I'm guessing he was "dying inside" over the dads stupidity. Not that he was "dying" of laughter. So ease up a bit, and props to taking the 4 yr old hunting. Can't wait for my son to get older. Almost killed me when he asked if he could go this year and I had to tell him no. (He's 2, and we just had new kid born on the 1st so the wife had to stay home).

SneakAttack

I could care less how you hunt, but here is the issue I have. My bucks bed miles away from where I set up. The deer cross a highway every night and every morning. When you have "ROAD HUNTER GUY" playing goalie on the highway the deer don't stick to their patterns that they have been in the entire year. If "ROAD HUNTER GUY" would take 1 day to do some pre-season scouting he would find their tracks and know the trails the deer tack in and out on a daily basis. But instead "ROAD HUNTER GUY" decides he will roll out of the local motel and hit the pavement for a morning of donuts and twinkies.

Ooh yeah, I almost forgot. I was talking to one of my local buddies last night after he shot his buck, he said he watched this same truck of guys doing something they shouldn't after dark. If you are reading this and you were with "ROAD HUNTER GUY" you should be hearing from the DWR soon. Lets just say all the locals saw you this weekend and they are ticked. Good luck at your trial!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-19-09 AT 09:38AM (MST)[p]Yeah my 2yr old started bawling when she couldn't go with big brother. I'm just glad they want to go, whether it be 'road hunting' or what ever. It's way better than sitting home watching Qubo!

Good luck, be safe and recreate(hunt) however it fits your ability and desire.

+1 for the little kids getting out with dad. I love taking my 2 year old with me to the woods. She will be smoking some big bucks by the time she is old enough to hunt. Her mom isn't too happy that she is obsessed with deer instead of shopping. LOL!!!

Who cares if people are driving around looking for deer! Seriously! I guess only a real hunter hikes from his house to his hunting spot! Whatever! I drive over 100 miles just to get to the dirt road that takes me to my hunting spot. Then I drive an additional 20 miles to my hunting spot. I also drive around to high spots looking for deer sometimes. If I happen to see a buck that I want to shoot, I will get out and stalk him. If he happens to be by the road, I will not drive past him because he is too close (unless hes by a paved road). I will actually pull over, get out, get as close as I can (without breaking any laws of course) and put a hole in that SOB! The roads are for public use. Seriously, you havent used your vehicle as a hunting tool? I use my truck all the time when hunting, nothing wrong or unethical about it. I am quite grateful that we have such good access to our hunting grounds. If you want to be by yourself and not around other hunters and are INTOLERANT of others you should not hunt public land. There is plenty of private land out there and plenty for sale.

If thats how he wants to hunt, so be it! You have chosen the way that you want to hunt. If you are hunting in an area where there is alot of pressure, or alot of road hunters. You need to adjust the way you hunt and not get upset at people for hunting the way that you want. I know it can be frustrating when you think you have the deer all figured out and some lazy road hunter ruins it, but he has every right to be there. On the rifle hunt, I use the other hunters to my advantage. I can always count on them to push the deer to me. I cant tell you how many times I have seen a hunter stalking a buck and they push him right to me! Works like a charm.

Trevriv you are "ANGRY ROAD HUNTER GUY" I don't need to say anything else to about you, you have laid it out for all of us.

If you haven't heard Jim Rome conversation about "Soft Ball Guy" go to you tube and punch in Soft Ball Guy Jim Rome. It will make your day!!!

Someone should come up with some camo that looks like a spare tire or a toolbox or something you'd find in the back of a truck. That would be cool.

That would be cool! I always thought it would be cool to have camo that looked like another deer, a pitiful deer so I wont get shot! you could have camo as the main pattern but put a lifesize picture of a deer on the front. Put a picture of a deers legs on yours (over the camo), and put a picture of the deers butt on your back! I'll bet it would work freakin awesome! As long as you dont get shot, that is!

Feleno Inc. has a line of redneck camo that might be useful to some of youz for hunting out of the back of the truck. Shirt can be color matched to your hunting vehicle

Geez! Maybe I am ANGRY ROAD HUNTER GUY :). Sure sounds like it, doesnt it. What I meant to say is: I hate road hunters, they should all burn! LOL I think there should be a ROAD HUNTERS SEASON, where "real" hunters shoot Road Hunters (they wont be hard to find and we could try that cool camo that looks like pavement with a white line in the center!)

Here's the problem feleno most people who road hunt are fat and lazy. The shirt has to be xxx size and make sure there are plenty of pocket's to put those cookie's in when they do wonder off the side of the road to discharge those bodily fluid's wouldn's want them to get dehydrated you know.

JIMBOB, how do you know how much Vagisil costs? Just wondering? great post though, glad to have you on board! I just joined MM too.

For one thing, I havent Road Hunted since i was Fourteen. You cant kill Anything but a damn 2-Point from the Road. Second I wear Normal Clothes. I don't Own a Single Bit of Camo, Not even a Camo Hat. I dont Use Scents or Scent Blocker. Jeans and a T-Shirt Work Great. If a Deer Sees you, He sees you, Camo aint gonna Help That.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-19-09 AT 02:48PM (MST)[p]Jeans and a T-shirt huh? Ok. Are you hunting with a bow or a rifle?

whether camo works or not is irrelevant! its how much you spend on your camo that counts. Its kinda rude to kill something without dressing up for it.

JimBob,

You just proved my point again. If you are signing up for monster muleys to prove your point that you like to road hunt on highways, you are "ROAD HUNTER GUY." JIMBOB Please post us some pictures of these huge deer that you have killed in your jeans and t-shirt. You are the true definition of a redneck. And all this time I thought I was a redneck for wearing camo and talking about deer hunting with everyone I knew.

+1 for the shirt with the tire. Thats good stuff!!! I need to start selling those at the small town gas stations during the hunts, I am going to be rich!!!

See HOYT SOUTHERN REGION post by Dillon just put up. The trick is to let the truck keep on rolling after you jump out. Also no spare tire camo needed.:)

For all of you that do roadhunt. Please come to Arizona and do it so I can turn you in and get you arrested.

Per A.R.S. 17-301 B, R12-4-319)

You are unlawfully using
a vehicle to take wildlife if you intentionally
drive around until you see the animal you
wish to harvest and then make an attempt to
take. ?Road hunting? is illegal; so is pursuing
wildlife with a vehicle, chasing or heading off
moving wildlife with a vehicle, and driving offroad
to get closer to wildlife. You do not have
to shoot from the vehicle to be in violation.

So there...put that in your vagisiled up panties and smoke it.

Yup. Figured. Same dude that's drinking Keystone while he's hunting and leaving the damn cans out in the woods. Do us all a favor and just STOP. Give's the rest of us a bad repuation.

Id Like to see someone Shoot a Bow out of the Window of a Truck!!! Besides Most road Hunters Get out of the Vehicle

these deer were less than a sixty yards off a very busy road. Those are some big 2 points! guess thats what youd call 2points with trash!

I didnt read thru this post, but from what i did i guess every one of you badasses backpack in and eat bugs for protien, so you can stay out longer. not one of you use the road system to glass or put a stalk together.

so why are you so worried about what a "road hunter" is doing? alot of you need a glass of STFU.

i like your first post jimbob:)

Jimbob will you not be so formal. I am starting to feel like I am talking to highly educated individual.

Will you at least send us a picture of you in your white t shirt and jeans without any of your monster bucks that you are telling us you have killed. I want to see who we are dealing with. You have to be one handsome son of a gun!!!

LMAO at this one :D

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON OBAMA! (just kidding) ya, this is the funniest thread ever!

The best site I have seen of a road hunter was in 1998 when I was hunting on a LE unit in southern Utah and there was a truck with a 4 wheeler in the back and a fellar about 350 pounds sitting on the 4 wheeler and his wife was driving him around. I seen him every day for a week, and yes he was in full camo face paint and all. But he did have a orange ball cap on....

LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-09 AT 10:09AM (MST)[p]back in the day road hunting was the shizz. I remember having at least 6 guys in the truck. When someone saw a deer it was every man for himself. luckey to get out of the truck without your buddies using you as a step ladder. Then you had better be a fast shot cause if you werent your buddies would have already launched arrows at the already running buck. LOL

Road hunting is great. If you want to see some more hard core bowhunting road hunters go up on pason canyon loop. i have never seen so many trucks bumper to bumper with rednecks in the back. great Sunday entertainment.

I also still do some road hunting with the kids. If I were with my kids and a two point jumped out and presented a shot I would take it.

Growing up on the family ranch, everyone road hunted our place behind locked gates. My Dad was probably the biggest offender, hardly ever walking 100yds away from the pickup and even then only to set up on some vantage point to watch while i made my way through the other side of the canyon brushing out deer for him.

When i finally got old enough to hunt on my own, i hated hunting out of the truck on all but a few family "social occasions." I became what today is called hard core, without the fancy gear, and doubt that many here have put in the hours, miles of scouting, and getting back in during the hunts that i did for 30 years or so. To my way of thinking, back then, the guys hunting out of their trucks were missing out on the best hunting. They also were no threat to the "bigger" bucks i new to be in the area. To each his own i thought...but i wanted to be away from the crowds.

Now, my knees are going out and my feet burn and ache to beat the band just to hustle and put in a 8 hr shift. Thru all the years of bodily abuse, I somehow managed to beat the odds and get older :) I can no way come even close to hunt the way i did for years and years. If i'm resigned to hunting out of the truck now, i'll know it's not the best way. I'll still be hunting though, i can still go some, can still shoot with most, know a bit about the game, and also know that a lot of those here now complaining about road hunters will get old and broken down themselves one day, if they're lucky :) and that they then, still might enjoy getting out to hunt bucks, however and whenever they can manage to do it.

Well you know Eel... I always camo up when road hunting. I do have an image to uphold ya know.. besides when you shoot one and drag it off the road you have to be dressed in the apropriate attire for photos...

Sheesh... Thought everyone knew that.

NOTE:
Always make certain: The truck, ice chest, lawn chairs, empty beer cans, guys getting rid of beer they already drank are not in the background..

It's those little things that make a otherwise great photo a not so great photo.

Well Fine than Phinkle..

I'm going to stay in CA and road hunt.. To hell with AZ if thats how you feel. Can't even hunt outta state now..

Last year on my Wyoming antelope hunt, my 6 year old was my hunting partner and we hunted our butt's off from the truck. Took a great lope and called a dog in to 50 yards. In certain situation, a truck can be a very effective tool, especially if you or someone you are hunting with are limited in some aspect. In light of the fact that "your" bucks were crossing a major road, did it really surprise you that they attracted the attention of other hunters?

Antelope2008008.jpg

+ 1 for takin your boy out huntin with you but if you would have gottin of the road you would have killed a bigger dog and goat. Notice the coyote was starvin. Hope your happy with the milk on their lip's.

That's how we called in the dog. He was real hungry and came to the sound of the cooler repeatedly being opened (beer for me and milk for my son). That would also explain the milk thing on the lips of the lope.

You are the ROADHUNTER SNIPER two great placed shot's. The goat has a awewome cape hope it was mounted.

Those antelope photos got me thinking. I don't consider myself a road hunter but that's how I hunt antelope in Wyoming. I guess maybe I am a road hunter.

There is something so nice about cruising the dirt roads for antelope when I have just been hauling my butt up and down the steep mountains for deer and elk.

Two priceless memories
#1 Getting up way early, hiking way far, busting the snow and then helping my son after he dropped a 30"er.

#2 Getting up kind of early, riding around in the truck, (the windows were rolled down and the heater was on low), eating donuts, finding a "good" three point, (when I was young all 3 points were considered "good", watching dad make a great shot, then after dragging the deer back to the truck we loaded up dad and took him to the hospital where he later had 3 bypasses.

Which deer hunt was better?
Don't know.

Both hunts have their good points but...

I would road hunt to hell and back if I was given the opportunity to spend some time with my Dad.

+1000 to all those who road hunt with family that can't do the hardcore hiking stuff. That just proves there is a time and a place for everything!

+1 Model-70. I would do that too if my Dad could go along.

It's always an adventure!!!
www.awholelottabull.com

My favorite trophy of all time is a spike deer I killed with my 3 kids and my brother's son all along for the ride. The oldest was 9 and the youngest was 4. Certainly not the biggest and probably my smallest "trophy" but my kids still talk about that buck that Dad shot with them. They could care less about my more mature animals. All that mattered to them is they went hunting with Dad and got a buck!

I believe there is a place and time for everything as long as it is done safely and legally. I vowed this year to NOT shoot my buck from the road as I could have very easily out on the Book Cliffs. I am proud of the fact that I did not. I also don't knock those who did. To each there own.

I would also say if the road hunters are really bothering you, you need to move spots away from the roads. There is plenty of room off the roads!!

Good luck to you all on your hunts!

Chad

The first 5 days of the archery hunt I did not run into 1 hunter while out hiking. On day 6 I finally did. They were sure burning up the roads though. I'm not complaining. I've done my share of "spotting" from the roads while growing up. I'll still do it if it means the kids are having a good time.

I was able to harvest an elk last year with my son and nephew close to the road. The weather was horrible and I wasn't going to ruin the experience for them for me to shoot something, although it still worked out. I think things have changed some. I remember seeing some pretty nice bucks growing up while driving down the road with my dad. Now days you just have to work a little harder to see a nice buck. That doesn't mean hiking 10 miles a day, but it does mean getting out and doing a little hiking.

Couldn't help but remember a buddy and myself saw a local sheriff up bigcottonwood driving around shooting at buck's with his bow on solitude ski resort in uniform on the clock obviously i thought that was pretty funny. Hear we are payin for him to hunt i wonder if they are hireing.

There have been some very funny posts on this thread. I agree with all of the posts talking about hunting with your kids or older family members or the disabled. This post was not directed at them. There is a time and place for everything.

WacMaster didn't I hear something about you tagging out? I heard your buddy passed up the buck that you shot. Can you confirm these rumors?

The rest of us are still slaving away in the hills trying to find our M.M.

I am getting so desperate that I started to think how nice it would be to drive the roads in the morning with a coffee in one hand and a donut in the other, radio up and heater on.

Then later on in the day I will replace that coffee with a beer!!!

To help with road hunter traffic while on Forest Service ground I propose that those drivers with last names beginning with A-K, take the even numbered roads until noon, The drivers with last names beginning with L-Z take the odd numbered roads until noon. Then switch for the evening hunt.

Just trying to help.:)

jimbob do you need glasses ive seen alot of good bucks killed off the road ive personaly killed 2 good ones that wasent planned from the truck but the last one my wife and 3 year old girl got to see me kill it ow it was 30" plus 190 so the 2 piont deal your wrong and i think 80% of the guys will back that up

wow this ones getting long! but I love road hunting with my 3 kids! I don't expect to harvest an animal, and its a blast hanging out with them looking for deer! but I did see a guy on an archery kiabab hunt years ago, he had his lazy boy recliner strapped to the roof of his minivan, and his wife driving him around! I think I punked from laughing so Damn hard! and the g&f did nail him!

Im sorry shawdoseeeeeeeeeker or stalker what ever you call yourself i don't speak stupid. My buddy claim's he passed up my buck but i trulley believe he couldn't stop shaking. It worked out the best for him because 15 min after mine went down he arrowed a 180 class 4x4. As for mine he's only 22 half wide but has over 40 inches of mass and gross score's in the mid 160's it was a great evening drivin up and down the road. lol I think you have pic's why dont you post them.

Not archery, but at times I have worked MAO for deer, at times hunted horseback. I Hunted with Dad and family members for most of 40 yrs.Sometimes we even road hunted, sometimes chained up rigs to make it out before we were snowed in for winter. And although the enclosed is a "What's wrong with this picture"... It evokes many great memories of family deer hunts that are nowadays all but forgotten. Deer hunting..."always an adventure" and methods of accomplishment..."to each his own"!
p.s. It was taken at our 'McDonald Creek Deer Blind'!

Hey that looks a lot like our hunting group but I don't see anyone camo'd up and no empty beer cans. But they has potential! I especially like the portable blinds.

After reading through this post I believe some clarification is in order. I will provide some guidelines as to what qualifies a hunter to be a "ROAD HUNTER GUY" (which is a great new classification of hunter). If you fit into any of the following descriptions, consider yourself "ROAD HUNTER GUY"

1. You are between the ages of 17 and 55 and are physically capable of walking more than a mile with no major discomfort yet choose not to because that dang sagebrush might tear your pants.
2. One time you actually said "put 'er in neutral and turn off the engine, will coast right up on em and they'll never know what hit them."
3. Every hunting season you purchase brand new spiffy Rocky brand boots and at the end of every season they still have that nice new boot shine to them.
4. You own a window mount for your spotting scope.
5. You have mastered the art of shooting from the hood of a running pickup (those things can get hot you know).
6. Your 4 wheeler has more miles on it then your local ups truck.
7. You had to miss the second half of last hunting season due to an unfortunate injury involving your buddy, a big ole 2 point, and an ingenius idea to use the truck as a moving blind.
8. Your pack contains more beer then water.
9. You can no longer see your toes due to a mysterious basketball shaped lump located where your stomach used to be.
10. You have changed more tires then tony stewarts pit crew.
11. You can hop a 4 strand fence, get off a shot, retreat, and escape undetected in 6 seconds flat.
12. You have a freshly burnt cd titled "hunting mix '09" that really gets you pumped up.

I hope this helps those of you that are riding the fence as to whether or not you are "ROAD HUNTER GUY."
