Wyoming region G advice

A friend of mine and I drew region G this year. Now he can not get the time off that I've scheduled and I'm locked in to my time. I did hunt the southern part of the region several years ago and took a really nice buck, but I was leaning on his knowledge of the area. He's hunted it 4 times and knows the region alot better than I do.
I was half considering looking into a guide for a semi-guided deal, but I would rather DIY. I hate to admit this but I'm a little concerned about packing in and hunting that country by myself. My plans are to pack in with the basics and see how things go. I hope to get out there a couple days before season and do some scouting. I wish I could go earlier to scout but the 24hr drive and a pretty tight work schedule does not allow. Any advice or words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Well, my best advise is, scout a lot, hunt a lot, and do both in the right places and the right time. Sounds like scouting is a bit out of the question for you....bummer. Hopefully you have taken plenty of time off work to give the hunt the attention it deserves.

If you are going alone, just be careful and atleast try and let someone know where you'll be, it makes gathering your carcass easier for searchers...LOL....JUST KIDDING! But really, be careful.

If I were in your shoes, I'd load up a backpack and head for a high ridge somewhere and hope there's a taker buck in the area. Obviously, without scouting numerous areas, it's hard to guess what might be in any particular spot. You just have to take a guess and give it hell.

If you're not super picky, then you have a decent chance of finding a nice buck. There are quite a few 22-25 inch bucks running around up there. Even if you don't get one, the place is sure a fun place to hunt if you enjoy working your butt off climbing steep mountains. It really is my favorite place I've ever hunted, not the best quality I've experienced, but all in all, the most enjoyable place.

Good luck man and we expect to see photos in October. Whether they're just shots of the high country and your camp or of a 245-inch monster 10x11.

Where are you coming from?

Couldn't you use your friends knowledge along with a marked-up map to get you into some good areas?

I will be out there on the opener of Sept 15th, when are you planning to be there?
Sent you a PM too.

If you're going it alone with basically no scouting it would be worth it to hire a guide. If you decide to go it alone get a Spot locating device it could save your life. Good luck!

At this point I plan on being out there the 13th. I hope to leave michigan sometime the 12th. I have cordinated with my buddy about other areas besides the ones we've hunted together in. I was really lucky last trip and basically stumbled into a 170ish buck (we were on our way back from a busted stalk and the buck must have exited down the next wash over and on the way back to the truck there he was). We had spent 4 days going after him (he would not bed) and one the fifth day we decided to go around that mountian to see where he was going and in the end he came to us. Only a couple miles from the truck.

He is a dandy but is about the base of what these guys will shoot, they are serious trophy guys who eat a lot of tags and tag a few toads. The area is awesome and an incredible experience.

I am leaving my truck and flying back to michigan (cheaper than driving) the 22nd and returning for antelope in northern WY the 30th. I might bust back down to G for more mule deer hunting if my buddy can go then. We'll see.

If I do go it alone and something happens and you do find my carcus up there, leave me. I would have died in Gods country a happy man. Take care of my rifle it's been good to me.

When you decide on an area to hunt let us know where it is and if we don't hear back we'll g lookin for yer rifle! jk. obtain some maps, download goggle earth, hit the stair climber with a 50 lb pack and head for the steepest nasties country you can find and glass your ass off and kill a monster, It's that easy!

Hell, why did'nt I think of that. What ever happens I'm looking forward to getting out there. Worst case senario I go north early and get archery tag for antelope and go chase them in the flat land. All I know is that I won't be at work and
my cell phone does not work out there. Looking forward to it.
I've been on goggle earth and am getting some cordinates in the GPS ready to go. If anyone has any spots that are good to glass from I'd be interested in the help. I've bought a pair of 15x56's I can't wait to try out.
As of right now I'll be hunting mainly in 135 probably out of moose flat campground or another spot south of there.

Keep the comments/help coming.

pick up a good tripod for those 15s Good Luck

Yeah, I bought a used K&K. From what I read the pistol type head leaves something to be desired but I used it elk hunting and ended up hooking up on a really nice bull in AZ 6A so it must of done it's job. From what everyone says there is better out there but the good thing is I'm too dumb to know the difference. I do know I'm not in a possition to buy one of those sportsmans tripod/head. Mine is not that lite but it seems good enough for me. I can use it on the spotter as well I have two bases.
Looking forward to some clean mountain air.

I was just looking at on of my post and noticed that I misprinted something. The unit I will start hunting in is 135 west of big piney. Thanks for all the help so far guys, I'm looking forward to getting out there. However I threw out my back the other night. I hope it feels better by the opener. I don't think there is much hope of hunting that land with a bulging disk.

G- #135 opens October 1st if I am reading it correctly.

Nothing wrong with hunting solo, just hunt smart and safe.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-09 AT 06:36AM (MST)[p]I did it twice. The unit I am planning on hunting is 143 west of Big Piney not 135. I've hunted that area before and hooked up on a nice 4x4. I know 135 opens Oct. 1st and the other units open the 15th of September. SO if anyone has any advice for 143 I'm all ears.

Just wanted to say "THANKS" to all the people who were willing to lend a hand or give advice on my upcoming hunt in region G. It is truely amazeing the amount of sportsman that are out there that are just flat out good people.
Well it turns out my buddy is more than likely getting off work to meet me out there. GOOD LUCK this Fall guys.
